  1. No! HSR just a regular pub quiz goer with a group of friends for a meal, a few beers and a laugh. Been going together for over 12 years.

There are a number of pub trivia questions that turn up regularly and that James Bond question is one of those.

Here are a few more common Bond quiz questions

    Q) What was the first car to appear in a Bond film? .....

    Q) Which actor appeared in the most Bond films? .....

    Q) Which actor from Last of the Summer Wine had roles in three Bond films? .....

    Q) Pat Roach from Auf Weidersehen Pet  appeared in which Bond film? .....

    Q) What was the first British car that James Bond drove? .....

All the answers are Googleable but if you like your James Bond you should know them

  2. I think it is time to correct some perceptions about Australia

They do have the advantage of being 32 times bigger in area and less than half our population.

Granted if you take the population density of the whole of Australia it comes out as 3.2 persons per sq kilometre. This is ultra simplistic as 66+% of our population live in our 8 capital cities and 84% of our total population live within 50km of the coast. Lets look at Sydney which is probably the best known of our cities. The average population density of greater Sydney is 304 per sq km. The Australian Bureau of Statistics show there are areas of Sydney where population density is between 10,000 and 20,000 per square km, admittedly these are high density housing areas with many high rise towers and blocks of flats. Most of urbanised greater Sydney has a density of around 4,300 per sq km. Around the same as Nottingham or Liverpool.

All they have to do now is keep it the same whilst allowing foreigners into the Country.

We do allow limited numbers of people to come into Australia, mostly returning ex-patriots but some people with special circumstances and business travellers are allowed to enter but all these have to undergo medi-hotel quarantine for two weeks at their expense and test negative for covid 19 twice during the quarantine period. Travellers from New Zealand are currently exempt from restrictions.

.and on the other side of the world, adjacent to almost no-one else.

We can't help living in God's Country however the Indonesian border is only 245 km (152 miles) from Australia and Indonesia has a population of around 270 million. Papua New Guinea with a population of nine million people is only 3.8 km (2.4 miles) from Australian territory.

The real reasons that we have been so successful in so far combating the virus are that our federal politicians acted early and effectively closed our international borders and the few that were allowed to enter having to go into quarantine for two weeks.

During the second wave of infections we thankfully  had state premiers that went against the Federal Gov't advice to open up commerce and borders and effectively locked down state borders with other states and metropolitan borders with regions within their capital cities.  Melbourne a city of 5 million people put in place severe restrictions that lasted 111 days. Including a curfew, severe limitations on household and work contacts, limitation on non essential travel to 5 km from home, closing all shops schools, unis, pubs etc. etc. This was supported by effective tracking and tracing of contacts of those infected (Not the useless App promulgated by the Federal Government) and a massive testing program. This has reduced Covid cases from a peak of almost 700 cases per day in August to zero for 4 days running. I know it was a massive clamp down on the people of the state of Victoria and Melbourne in particular but so far it has worked. The city has started to open up again so let's see if there is a surge of cases in two or three weeks.

Whether the economic cost vs health arguments ever get resolved is another issue.

Unfortunately as for the UK I cannot see dithering Boris making the necessary decisions either way,  either, to introduce a full and meaningful "lockdown" or a strategy that protects the vulnerable and allows everyone else to get on with things. In the meantime I hope everyone on here, many of whom like me are likely to be in the vulnerable category, do what you have to to reduce your exposure to others. Whatever happens this pandemic is far from over.

    Stay safe and keep well

I am planning on cataract surgery

    Hi Loppy,

I have had cataract surgery on both eyes in the last two months. Absolutely brilliant, you don't know how bad your eyes are until someone fixes them as the deterioration is so slow you don't notice it.

The operations were no problem, twighlight anaesthesia only after affect was like having sand in your eyes the evening of the operation but it was gone in the morning. Hope the BP can be controlled and that you can go ahead and have the operation. Then like me you will be able to see a pimple on a gnats bum at 50 paces.

  5. Barry Nelson was the first James Bond in a 1954 TV special Casino Royal.

Bob Holness became the second actor to portray James Bond in a radio adaptation of Moonraker for the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Its amazing what sticks in your mind after twelve years of regularly attending quiz nights, it is quite a common question and turns up every so often and still catches many people out.

  6. After 12 games without a win the Stags have sacked their manager, Graham Coughlan. He only managed to win 4 of the 29 games he was in charge for.

Bookmakers have Gary Caldwell at 2/1 and Nigel Clough is 6/4 second favourite for the job.

  7. I find it is the exact opposite here Lizzie. The female commentators especially in the cricket are so much better than the males. They don't bombard you with inane babble of anecdotes from their tours of Kickatinalong or of stupid behaviour in hotels, clubs and bars. They have the ability to let the pictures tell the story and keep quiet and only talk when they can add some insight into what we can see.

  8. Back in 1990 and courtesy of United Airlines and my frequent flyer points I was able to take the family to Disney World in Florida.

I especially enjoyed Space Mountain ( a roller coaster that is mostly pitch black), Big Thunder Mountain and the Epcot Centre. Having a six year old we had to go on all the kiddie rides and this ear worm has stuck in my head ever since and we could not get her off the spinning cup and saucer ride. You can go on all the rides via YouTube.

  9. You think you have problems with daylight saving Have a look at these maps of Australia pre and post daylight savings

    image.png.42edf19ca96f57b7f959718a410bf2cc.png

Have a look at the No DST map. The yellow bit on the right is Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. The Green bit in the Middle is South Australia and the Northern Territory and the Blue bit is West Australia. All very logical except the half hour bit in the middle which should really be an hour difference to the east coast.

Now look at the DST map, what a schemozzle as some states have daylight saving and others don't

Pity the poor people catching a flight from the Gold Coast/ Coolangatta airport which is right on the NSW/Queensland border. If your are at one end of the terminal your phone could well show a different time to the other end of the terminal depending upon which mobile tower the phone is picking up. This time difference often results in the unaware missing their flights.

We are further west than Queensland yet our time is half an hour ahead of theirs during the summer, and we now have 5 separate time zones to grapple with, stupid if you ask me.

  10. Brew,

Could you please provide a link to the "Japanese Pin Factory" story/study.

As a manufacturing engineer and process improvement specialist for 40 years I would be interested in reading it.

A google search has not thrown up anything that I think relates to it.
