  1. The heading of the thread got me to thinking of these stores in  Mansfield.

I can remember either a Farrands or Marsdens just off the corner of the market place at the top end of Church Street almost opposite the Police box.

Others that have been mentioned on another site are opposite Broomhill School, Wood Street and Moor Street and I think on Sutton Road

There was also a  Marsdens at Wood'us

I wonder if our Ben graced them with his presence

I remember when we'd moved to Bestwood Village when I was 14, I'd lay in bed with the window wide open listening to the night sounds of the village.

That could be my memories coll0410.

A different colliery village, but the same sounds. Not a Mackemsons bus but a Butlers Brothers Bedford OB bus, The B8 ran through the village but it was only MDT buses that came to the canteen, the odd Lodekka but mostly AEC Regents The first pit hooter of the day often woke me up to do my paper round and a few years later when I started work

  3. What about the infinite improbability drive

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy's entry on the drive also states that it was invented "following research into finite improbability, which was often used to break the ice at parties by making all the molecules in the hostess' undergarments leap one foot simultaneously to the left, in accordance with the theory of indeterminacy". It further explains that many respectable physicists wouldn't stand for that sort of thing, "partly because it was a debasement of science, but mostly because they didn't get invited to those sort of parties."

  4. Beekay did that flask have a tartan print on the outside?

I had a similar one with a wide mouth that you could put really chunky soup or chipolata sausages and beans in.

Great on a cold winters day when fishing.

Did you subscribe to milk in the flask or one who insisted that the milk be added separately, in our case from a Camp coffee bottle.

  5. I'm on my favourite rant again, packaging.

This time it is about cereal or any other boxes that have the stupid "to close insert tab opposite here" closures.

When I try to close a newly opened box of cereals immediately after use the contents settle, the box swells in the middle and there is no way you can get the tab to stay under or in the little slot or as often happens the little slot rips and then becomes no use at all.

As I get older I find my tolerance to all kinds of stupidity decreases.

  6. Apparently the average human stomach holds around a litre or a quart of liquid.

Some of the drinkers I knew must have processed it quickly because they had an amazing capacity for beer.

Any of you blokes heard the expression "breaking the seal". You can drink for quite a long time until you really need to go to the loo and after that first time you then have to go on a regular basis.

  7. England doing well in the first session, 2 of the sandpaper trio out, just need to get Smith before he gets really settled in.

The TV coverage is sub-par, what is the obsession with ultra close ups, just pull back so we can see the fielding positions not some stupid graphic in the corner.

What is with those ridiculously large numbers on the players backs, what use are they?  They have their names on the shirts

I'd like to be able to listen on the radio but our ABC (BBC equivalent) have decided only to broadcast via an app on your digital devices, what plonkers, whose mobile phone battery lasts long enough to listen to a full days cricket?

  8. It has not started well for the Forest on the home front, losing 2-1 to Mansfield at Field Mill.

Yes I can hear the cries of "but it was only a friendly" maybe, but if you cant beat a team that is in the bottom tier of league football then I wonder what the new season holds? At home to WBA on Saturday and the week after away at Leeds
