  1. Surprised no one has mentioned the old "County Cup " matches held every year in the sixties between Notts. Forest and Mansfield Town. My old man refereed those games as well as games in the Midland League.

  2. In reply to Dick`s post may 7th. You are probably thinking of Dave Tye. If you turned left at Cromford crossroads, on the way into Matlock, went up a ways then turned right, he was just on the right. The only place open on a Sunday. Made for a good excuse to go for a burn to Matlock, long before it was fashonable. After they tore down Wings old shop, a guy by the name of Dave took over the business and relocated to Church Drive. Bought my venom clubman from him. Best 100 quid I spent. I used to work with John Foot who raced Itoms for Andy Bone. Also worked with Dale Wa
  3. Hi Woody, Blackie here ( Colin ). Sitting here looking at past postings for Mellish. Don`t come to the site very often but you and a few others stirred up a few ghosts from the past. I remember well my years at Mellish. Not being very bright and very unhappy at being separated from all my mates from primary and junior school ( most of whom went to Carton-le-Willows ) I did not apply myself to any-thing other than sports. Looking back at that first year I think most of us came from humble beginings and all areas of Nottingham. Personally I think we quickly realized that we were all in it for th
  4. Hey Catfan,How come you still have yours? They made me give mine back when I left.Still have my P.S.V. and conductors Badges though. They still operate Single deck and articulated trolleys in Vancouver, but a far cry from the 1948-1954 Brill trolleys I drove when I first came here that were still being used into the late `70`s.
  5. Looks like I stirred up a few memories. Thanks for the link,Cliff Ton.
  6. Boy,the memories are starting to flow !!! Any-one remember going to the dances at The Cecil Hall and St.Paul`s in Daybrook on saturday nights? There must have been lots of good groups who got their start to fame there (or not)
  7. Mick Vaughan was another Arnold lad.I remember sitting on the steps of Arnold baths trying to play guitar and impress the girls when Mick showed up and put me to shame. I`m 64 and STILL trying to learn guitar and impress the girls !!!
  8. Just reading the posts about The Flying Horse being a "gay" bar reminds me of a grand old "queen" Albert Brown whom I frequently took home (on the #43 bus to Trent Bridge).Used to wear a white suit and shoes, wore make-up and had a loverley head of blond hair. And NO,I`m not one of "those" Great old character. Catfan might remember him too.A small ditty from John Beeton`s book, Nottingham as It is spoke Volume four, and I quote: I remember a character,Albert Brown Swanning around in lipstick and paint,
  9. Any-one on here remember a group called The Mysteries out of Arnold? They had an old ambulance with Mysteries painted on the side.I was a bit too young to do the clubs at that time but I do remember going to the drummers house for a party one time. The guitarists name I think was Trev Ford lived on Killisick Estate around the corner from me as did Chris Morris of Paper Lace fame.
  10. Hey Stu,with reference to your post #73. When did Bobby run the Flying Horse? The reason I ask is that I am(was)related to Joan and Keith Robbins ( by marriage) who ran it in the Late 60`s,70`s and I think into the 80`s.They ran the old 7 Stars on Calverton Rd.prior to that.
  11. Still have fond memories of Meadow lane.Who can remember the team from the 60`s ? George Smith in goal.Bert Loxley,Dick Edwards,John Sheridon,Gerry Carver (who my dad still sees from time to time in Lowdham ) and who could forget the great Tony Hately and Jeff Astle.Keith Fry and Don Masson also. Those days Notts were lucky to get anywhere near to 2000 in attendance. My dad used to referee the "county cup" games between Notts.Mansfield and Forest.I think it was about 1/6d to get in.I still had programs from those days when I left for Canada in `76.Unfortunately they all got binned.Happy days.
  12. Hey Catfan ( or any one else who can help )Received your e-mail and wrote a lengthy reply but it went to nottstalgia ( Mick Twomey) I need to know how to get a personal reply to you via e-mail.I told you I was "new" not only to the site but also computers too.And it just goes to show I`m not too proud to ask for HELP (just a little thick ). Thanks Blackie.
  13. Thanks Stu,will check into that.Lived in Arnold `til `76 when I emmigrated to Canada.Still have lots of memories stored away if only I could get the old brain-box working.
  14. I seem to recall the 67 route, but that operated out of "the big house" (Parliament St. depot) and I worked out of Bulwell then Sherwood depots.
  15. Hi Linda, Blackie here( Colin Whitehead) I am also new to the site and your name came up when talking to Lizzie.Say hello to Len if he remembers me.Hope to share more memories of Kingswell school and old Arnold....
  16. O.K People,Blackie here.I am new to the site and am trolling through old postings. This shot is looking across the street from the old police station towards Coppice Rd. Blankleys was a chemist shop.Further along is the bottom of Wood St. then the old doctor`s surgery.Just passed the trees was a row of shops, one of which was Harry Waggs newsagents who I used to deliver papers for in the early 60`s.Opposite Blankleys was a row of shops, A florist,Merins bike shop and a dry cleaners. If any of you are interested, there is a site called arnold-history-group.org which I have just recently found.
  17. Hi Mick.Had a quick look at the map of Clifton ( I think there has been some changes,Ha,Ha.) The route we took came along Farnborough Rd. turned on Southchurch Dr.then onto Green Lane ( I think) We were supposed to turn around up there some-where and go the same way back, but the chippy was further up so we continued on,then turned right onto Clifton Lane to get back to Clifton Bridge. You have to realize,It`s been over 40 years and some-times things get a little foggy for an old Arnold lad !
  18. Hi Stephen,Blackie here.New to the site and have been trolling through some past comments.Your reference to the terminus for the 31 route got my old grey cells working.I don`t recall the terminus being at Westdale Lane. I thought it was more towards Porchester Rd. at the top of Woodthorp Drive?.There used to be a small triangular shaped island with a car showroom beside it and I seem to recall buses turning there.I do recall the terminus further along Plains Rd.and the turn-around as I used to drive the 31 and 50 route when they operated out of the old Sherwood Depot.I also remember every term
  19. Was sad to see the pics.of the pile of rubble. They call it progress ! Have lots of fond memories of the old place.Too bad I never stayed in touch with any of my old school mates.Left in`67 to work for Notts,County Council, then N.C.T.. then emmigrated in `76. I now live on Vancouver Island in Parksville. All the best,Colin.
  20. The "works specials" left from Boots just after 9pm and went to Clifton.Where we were supposed to turn around the ladies would always shout and ask us to go up the road to the chippy. We always did. Then it was back to Boots for the men coming out at 10pm.Same route.Same proceedure.Great people, always fun.Too bad I can`t remember the names of the streets, but it`s been over 40 years. In my minds eye,I could probably do it from memory, cus my aunt and uncle lived on Colebourne Rd. so I still remember.
  21. Hello again,Blackie here. Thanks for the welcoming greetings. I guess I`m at that point in life where cherished memories are starting to mean a lot to me ( SentiMENTAL old fool ) Have only recently found the site and am not familiar with the protocol for posting comments.Added to that,I`m not that computer savvey, but I get by. I live in British Columbia Canada so some of the phrases etc. are a bit alien to me ( been here since 1976 ) Stick with me,I`ll muddle my way through It.Thanks for the response to my postings ( this site, plus British school and Nottingham transport ( N.T.C. ) Thanks to th
  22. Hey catfan, Blackie here. New to the site.I worked for N.T.C. from `74 to`76 Drove out of Bulwell depot to start, then went to Sherwood. I remember doing the Boots specials from Beeston to Clifton in `74 Remember the old Regents and Renouns ? well. My first conductor was Dave ( chalky ) White who lived just up the street form Bulwell Depot.
  23. Hi Katyjay, still remember going to the clinic in Arnold Park with Christine Manners with verucas on both feet. They painted some purple stuff on them, then put a bandage around your feet.Had to keep it on for a week or so.When they took it off the verucas came out leaving little holes in your feet.
  24. Hi LizzieM,new to the site. Was reading your interesting stories about British school and Arnold Baths.I think the two attendents were Charlie and Len. 5d for an hours swim and a "penny cob" from Chambers after.Charlie, I seem to recall used to be a street sweeper for Arnold Council in the "old" days (still remember the horse and cart walking in front of him ) I also went to Kingswell school around the same time as you, then on to Henry Mellish Grammar.I played football for the school team along with Phil Mellors,Ian Lowe, Andrew Toach,Rob Wright,Keith Smith and others who I can`t recall.Iam sup
  25. Hi every-one ! Another Mellish old boy here. Was there in the 60`s Nickname Blackie. New to the site and computer illiterate, but I get by.Nice to see that some of you remember the old teachers, many of them I also remember. What about Dave Impey,"Aussie Whitworth" and the music teacher Mr. Hindle ? Fond memories of the school dinners,I was on the first table so I could see "seconds"coming. The "tuck shop" and smoking in the air-raid shelters behind the bike sheds.Left in 67 to join Notts.County Council as apprentice mechanic, then drove bus for N.T.C. until `76 when I emmigrated to Canada.Would
