  1. I reckon yer right Trafalger. I'd place the photo as late Fifties or maybe early Sixties. Sam and Len Ward were big friends of my parents.
  2. The shop opposite the Carlton/ABC was Beatties. Skills had a very cramped toy shop just above West End Arcade. Fantastic (to an 8 year old) selection of Lego in "pocket money" packs. There was another toy shop close by. Anyone recall it?
  3. Didn't they also have a stall on the Central Market?
  4. Is that the Beecroft's store on Pelham Street? Later became a sports shop - Suggs. "When we were boys we bought our toys at Beecrofts, Now we are men, we go again, to Beecrofts."
  5. Plenty of us have done the Mansfield Road run of a Friday/Saturday night. But how many have done the "ironman" Mansfield Road run from Redhill all the way into town? I've done it once on a Bank Holiday Monday and surprise, surprise felt a tad poorly the day after. So who can name the hostelries we visited?
  6. Definitely an old NCT vehicle. I would suggest that the location in question is the hotel at St Pancras.
  7. Shades of John Freeman and "Face to Face" here. I just find the architecture of Thoresby Hall unsettling since it reminds me of a nightmare I have from time to time involving spooky buildings and locations. It makes meel feel a little Rufford. Strange I know. Re the PO in Awsworth. Though I play for the Crown Inn I don't live in the area.
  8. DHL - an ON - liked his quizzes. http://www.rockcentral.co.uk/quiz/ I play every Thursday for the Crown Inn at Awsworth B)
  9. Are you sure that the second photograph was taken in Nottingham? It's a very distinctive road layout and I can't think of anywhere in the city that has ever had a safety mirror installed. I'll keep wracking my brain because this one has got me puzzled.
  10. Rufford Abbey. Glad it's not Thoresby Hall: the very thought of which strangely makes me feel very, very queasy.
  11. The bowling alley is still going strong. Barker Gate House is now called The Ice House and is given over to flats.
  12. Clarks shoes are all imported now. The company had a run in with the European Commission recently about the imposition of extra tariffs on the shoes from their Chinese and Vietnamese factories. As a youngster I could never work out why they were called Clarks but the logo (to my eyes) said Clanks.
  13. The first photo isn't Nottingham at all. It's Tamworth Road in Sawley.
  14. Silly me, and before I am corrected, they were of course Wayfinder shoes (with the compass in the heel)and not Pathfinders.
  15. Aaah Gordon Scott's. One of the few bastions of traditional service remaining in Nottingham. I well remember the regular visits to their Friar Lane shop for sensible lace-up school shoes and crepe soled holiday sandals. My mum always insisted on Start-Rite even when I really wanted a pair of Pathfinders or Tuf slip-ons - brands she considered "common".
  16. I'd go for somewhere down The Meadows: close to the bus depot.
  17. Looks as though 5 has eluded you. Nicker Hill
  18. Some additional clues to help you along. 4: Would Graham ride a pink one? 5: In brief: jockey beat the boxer to come out on top 7: Brothers work for the RAF and play for the RFU
  19. Number 1 is correct. Number 7 fits but not what I was thinking of. Look for a link between it and another of the puzzles.
