  1. I think I can vaguely remember her,  it was a big department took up a whole floor of Talbot House and when I moved over to Times we were in a separate room until we moved to an annex across the road next to the cemetery. I did enjoy working there, my boss was my mentor, taught me more than I ever learned at school and pushed me to succeed. Don’t think I would have got where I did or be who I am now without him. Happy memories.

  2. Phyllis rings a slight bell, but I did know a pair of twins and one of them was a Phyllis (the other one was Lillian, those names seem to have died out). I did move with my boss to start up a Times Furnishing (the very posh cav-woodhouse stores, quite expensive mostly down south especially London. The Peckham store was a nightmare) default department so she could have been there after I moved.
Must admit I did enjoy that job, was there for a long time. Great satisfaction tracking people down and getting the money owed paid. That is probably where I got my cynicism (spelling?) and “prefer dogs/cats to people” attitude from!!

I worked for a firm of solicitors in the 70s where one of the staff dealt purely with complaints and claims against Cavendish Woodhouse. It was mainly 3 piece suites and beds, often defective when delivered and the company was refusing to replace or repair the item.

I worked for Cavendish Woodhouse in their default department in Talbot House onTalbot Street (chasing non-payers, always think this is what made me so cynical hearing all the excuses why they couldn’t pay) for many years. The best excuse was that the settee fell to pieces and was found to be constructed of orange boxes!!
I did have a 3 piece suite from then, avoided their cheap and cheerful range, which lasted quite a while until the settee set on fire and a wall unit which I had from the 70’s until just before I moved back here.
I left in 1976 when I moved to Doncaster. A few years after it was sold off to another company, can’t remember their name but they eventually closed all the shops and made all staff redundant.

  4. One thing I have noticed is that there isn’t anything about the virus in schools on the news. Nottinghamlive has a list of schools that have reported outbreaks in Nottinghamshire (over 90 and counting) but there doesn’t seem to be any statistics nationally or local breakdowns (Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire etc.). There seem to be statistics for everything else but not this.

  5. Guttering etc. finished today, cctv camera fitted back up and a dead wire clipped off the front of the house, (there are a lot of wires on the front of the house still haven’t worked out what all of them are for). Must say that they seem to have done a good job, suppose the first downpour will prove it or not.
Certainly makes the house look better, the old ones were cast iron (possibly the originals?) and in very bad shape and the side soffits had peeling paint hanging off it which looked awful plus the front ones were all water stained where the guttering had twisted letting the water run onto the front wall affecting the front bedroom and the (dreaded) fitted wardrobe. Time will tell I suppose.
I must say the price was a surprise as I have a side extension and a conservatory at the back and presumed (wrongly as it happened) that it would need scaffolding but they had a platform thingy (technical term) that they erected and moved round as they did the job. I was suitably impressed:wub:

To Carni  sorry to hear you and your better half have succumbed to the virus, hope you are starting to feel better.

  6. I had a knock on my door this morning and it was my next door neighbour asking if they could put their car on my drive whilst they have their guttering, fascias and soffits done. Said yes and being cheeky asked them how much it was costing. It was a lot less than I thought so I asked her if she would ask them to do a quote for me. I was thinking it would be a lot more as I have a conservatory (iPad keeps changing to conservation!) and a one storey extension on the side so I was expecting them to have to use scaffolding.
When my handyman came to clear my gutters along with a few other jobs a couple of weeks ago he told me that the guttering on the front was pulling away from the fasci and was about ready to fall off. He had tried to reattach it but the fascia was too rotten and the guttering had tilted towards the house meaning water was running down the wall, not good as the house is rendered. It also explains the damp in the front bedroom wall and fitted wardrobe. As I am fairly certain I will sell up in the next few years (downsizing to a bungalow hopefully) I was a bit worried that I could end up with a big repair bill for rendering etc. before leaving.

The men doing the job came round with my neighbour (he does look out for me knowing I am on my own) and quoted me the same price. I mentioned about the conservatory and side room but apparently they have some gizmo that means no scaffolding is needed. They had been recommended to my neighbours by someone who has had work done by them so it appears they are reputable. So I took the plunge and told them I wanted it done. As they are doing both houses (we are semi-detached) they have knocked £200 off the price quoted as well. Result.

  7. Kai and I have just been out for our walk, we didn’t go out yesterday because of the weather, it was a rushing day instead much to his horror, so he was very insistent that he was going out today. It us actually a nice day now for walking although the wind is gusting a bit strong occasionally.

We went our usual walk where I can let him to have a sniffle around etc. The first part was a bit muddy, had my hiking boots on so wasn’t bothered. We got to the part where it is a narrow path, I looked down and realised we were walking on a layer of gloopy (Technical term) horse poo which covered all the path, I presume the rain had allowed it to spread. Normally the path is like a minefield but you can skirt around the piles (and I do mean piles), luckily Kai doesn’t find it interesting.  It was like this all the way the path was narrow which is quite a way, once the path widened towards the end we were able to get around the stuff once again.
Once we got home my boots were washed under the garden tap and Kai, who has very hairy feet, had all four washed before he came into the house. I think I can positively say he wasn’t very impressed at the procedure.
I always carry poo bags with me to clean up after Kai, I know it isn’t really possible to clear up after your horse, although I can remember the rag and bone man clearing up after his horse, but this was tacky (another technical term) and quite gross. I don’t think there are any health issues with it (?),  unlike dogs, but it was unpleasant.
I know the top is part of a bridlepath but don’t think the bottom part is. Perhaps a bit of thought is required by the horse riders?

  8. Glad to hear you are starting to feel a bit better Carni, it is a worrying when you hear of anyone you know that catches it. If it was the perfume shop wonder how many others have been infected as well. Just goes to show no matter how careful you are you have to depend on others being careful as well.
Roll on the vaccine. Although thinking about it I am not sure when I would actually ditch my mask etc. to be honest. Think the roll out would have to be completed before I would feel confident enough to do it and even then I think I would watch the stats very carefully before I did, if ever.

I've not seen these figures.  Your source please?

I have seen these figures as well when comparing the 2 vaccines. Not sure whether I saw it on AOL or on the news thingy on my phone. The Pfizer Vaccine does seem a bit expensive, I wonder how much profit they will make on it?

  10. Fireworks have been let off around me starting before last weekend (sure they weren’t all notification of certain deliveries). Now last year It wasn’t too bad but then Kai had Wolf with him besides me. However this year was a nightmare, it was like being in the middle of a war zone (radfordred had it right about NG8). Kai was beside himself, I sat on the floor with him with the telly on to cover a bit of the noise.

Unfortunately tonight is just as bad although he is at the present asleep (his ears are twitching though) laying with his head on my feet making sure I don’t move.
I don’t mind fireworks, but don’t understand the need for the violent explosions that seem to come with most of them.

  11. I must admit I don’t post that regularly, especially since March, as most days are much of a muchness as my Nana used to say. But I do come on regularly to see what is happening and catch up on the threads that interest me, even the epistles on the political thread. It would be very boring if we all agreed on everything And I do enjoy the (good humoured) debate between you all.

(I had a spectrum 2, loved it although had no idea what I was doing, then went onto a Commodore I think it was.)

  12. Yes Fat Harry is a rather portly fellow I must admit (like owner like dog).
I must admit my husband and I had a German Shepherd that tended to get that way but he was greedy. We had 2 cats and his mum as well. He could walk past the cat bowls and empty them without breaking stride, he was terrible. He was always careful around his mum though, she took no nonsense from him, and even though he was bigger than her she could still back him into a corner when he pushed her too far. She was definitely the boss, although our tomcat Sam thought he was (but he thought he was a German Shepherd anyway so he was a bit confused.)

In answer to RoseQueen. Sorry to hear about you job loss, it can’t be easy for you. It seems like people think the shops will never open again, the same goes those who have been pictured having the “last nite” out etc. Just don’t have any patience with them.

  13. On taking Kai out this morning I was glad I found my hat yesterday, frost on the ground and a nip in the air but a good day for walking.
There were loads of squirrels dashing around (Panic burying of acorns before lockdown I wonder) but not many people about (well it was only half seven) just fat Harry (Labrador) and his owner. Fat Harry is a bit of a character, he willl suddenly sit down and his owner has to wait until he is ready to walk again or pull him along on his rear end.

Anyway I digress. Kai was busy snuffling around in the fallen leaves behind me when a fox suddenly peered around a tree in front of me, don’t know who was more surprised me or him. Luckily Kai hadn’t seen him so I was able to get him on the lead just before the head appeared again. I made a Kai sit and stood still and the fox then ambled quite nonchalantly (spelling?) across the path in front of us. I am presuming it was a male as he was quite large and had a magnificent tail (is it called a brush not sure). I must say it made my day they are such beautiful creatures although I know some probably wouldn’t agree.

  14. I see Morrison’s are giving more key workers a 10% discount plus including them in the “special hour”. Including teachers in it now, says everything I think.

I too am over 70, have been a smoker most of my life, although I haven’t had a cig since Christmas, although there are contradicting reports on whether this makes it worse or stops you from getting it. I’d rather not take the chance of being in the 0.05%, although it looks like the percentage is actually over 1%.

  15. Okay so who is running the worldwide conspiracy? China, the Russians, CIA, the luminarti  (not sure how to spell that), one of the terrorist groups, certainly not Boris and co unless they are doing a brilliant job of acting. Could be bankers I suppose they have already tried to bring some economies to their knees.

  16. I am not lambasting all students, most of who are doing the right thing, it is just the idiots as shown on Sky news that want sorting out and those who had a party in the halls of residence. I would like to do the things I did before the first lockdown but have the sense to know it isn’t advisable to do them and I didnt go to university. Just don’t have any patience with them especially the ones who are whinging about self isolating for 14 days. For goodness sake it is just 2 weeks which in the scheme of things isn’t that long. I have not had any real social life since last March just get over it:angry:

  17. We went to the cafe at Strelley Hall. We thought the substantial meal was just for places selling alcohol but it includes cafes. You can’t go in and just have a tea/coffee without a meal. Think this is a Nottingham thing only part of the + in the 3+ tier along with no sale of alcohol after 9pm. Talking to our server they only found out about it late last nite, par for the course It seems recently.
Felt sorry for them, it wasn’t as busy as normal and we saw quite few come in but then leave without getting anything. They have put a lot of thought both inside and outside (awnings outside plus they have patio heaters ready for use) adhering to the covoid rules. It must be a bit soul destroying for them after they have done their best to follow the guidelines.
On the case of students who are still having parties (especially in the halls of residence) personally I think they should be dismissed (if that is the right word) from the university, there is no excuse they have had enough warnings. Bit drastic I know but enough is enough and perhaps the seriousness of the situation might sink in then.

  18. I can remember my mum getting a porridger (at least that is what she called it). It consisted of 2 saucepans, the bottom one had water put in it and then the porridge oats etc were put in the other one and then slotted into the lower one, if that makes sense.

When I came down for breakfast my heart would sink when I saw it on the stove. I detested the stuff, it was always lumpy and tasteless. Looked like polyfilla on the plate, grey and disgusting. I have tried the microwave stuff which is okay but I prefer my shreddies or muesli.

I did however like the “raw” oats just mixed with sugar, one of my friends mum used to give us some as a snack.

  19. Help - I am a bit (rather an understatement) confused by the dos and donts of tier 3. I have read a couple of lists of these and they seem to contradict each other (what a surprise).
I think those in my bubble can’t come in my house or garden, although one of the guidelines reads that they can. (I know other households can’t.) Which is right?
We are okay I think to go to a cafe (we sit outside) is this correct? I presume the substantial meal is just for places that serve alcohol.
Not impressed that the covoid app woke me up last nite just to tell me we had gone into tier 3, sure they could have done the notification at a more reasonable hour.
