  1. I have a squirrel who is still visiting my bird feeders or my neighbours (shouldn’t he be hibernating now?) for breakfast. I wondered why I was getting thru so much black sunflower seed. He is a bit of a pest but very ingenious, he hangs upside down on the bird feeder to get to the seed. I know I can get supposed squirrel proof feeders, but it doesn’t seem to bother the birds at all they are still coming after he has finished.

  2. Having waited in for 2 days for a delivery by Hermes which was supposedly sent on Tuesday I have now had an email from the seller saying they are unable to obtain the dog biscuits I ordered. Which begs the questions:

    1) Why did they not tell me when I placed the order that the biscuits were not in
         stock?
    2) How can you send something out for deliver when you don’t have it?
    3) How can you bill me for something you haven’t got/sent out?
I am now waiting for a refund and am not a happy bunny:angry2:

I don't think your last sentence reflects reality.  Parliament has not blocked Brexit and in that sense has accepted that we are leaving.

I do get the feeling some, perhaps not all, would do anything to stop it.

  4. I personally think that labours problem has always been Mr Corbyn to be honest and no matter what policies they put forward he was always the stumbling block. He gave me the impression of being a ditherer trying to please all people all of the time and avoiding making a decision. He just didn’t look like a prime minister in waiting.

No doubt DJ360 will put me right on this!
I wonder now if remainer MPs will accept we are leaving and help to get the best deal we can or just whinge from the sidelines?

  5. I can remember getting a Billy J Kramer LP (can you remember them?) one Christmas. Didn’t mind his first record Do You Want To Know A Secret, but I was a Rolling Stones fan so it didn’t get played that much. Saw him live once, he used to stick his tongue out when he was singing quite off putting.
I can vaguely remember getting a “pop star” annual can’t remember its name. My nana used to give us a half crown piece (12 and a half pence in new money I think) and she once gave me a bowl of hyacinths which was a bit confusing for a teenager!

  6. Helping mum put up the trimmings (having to put them back up after the budgie had a fight with them) and the ancient Christmas tree. Getting up at dawn to open presents, eating turkey for what seemed like weeks, my mums Christmas pudding, mince pies and Christmas cake. Playing board games and cards and the “big” film on tv. Being stuffed with chocolate from selection boxes and malteser boxes. Happy memories.

  7. It is a worry as we get older what would happen to our companions if we go first. Here you can arrange for Dogs Trust to take them, they never put a healthy dog down. I don’t know whether I will have another when I lose Kai. My husband and I always had dogs, usually German Shepherds, and cats with them at some times (they were usually strays that we took in). I will have to see if I can tolerate an empty house and on the other hand there are plenty of dogs who need a home so I will have to see how I feel.

  8. I took Kai to the vet last week for a six monthly check up, my other vet didn’t do this but my new vet offers one six months after annual boosters. So I decided to take advantage of it to have a talk to them about him. I was a bit worried as he was going days without eating except for the occasional treat, anyway he got a clean bill of health and actually weighs a bit more than his booster visit. She did suggest if I was worried they could do scans/xrays to check for anything else but I said I would think about it, he has enough to cope with at the moment with the loss of his brother.

He went for a the usual long walk on Sunday, have pictures of him near the hemlock stone, he slept all afternoon and then I gave him chicken and he cleared his bowl in one go which was a bit of a relief. Yesterday for the first time he actually ate biscuits out of his bowl. I have been hand feeding him from the bowl (I know a silly thing to do but I was worried about him) but this time he took a few from me and then started eating them on his own. He didn’t have as many as normal  but it was a start and a relief to see him do it.

He never barked much before, Wolf was the one always on guard who did all the barking when needed, but yesterday he barked at the postman. Don’t know who was more surprised me or him.

I am hoping now he is starting to adjust to the situation a bit and his eating will gradually get back to normal. I still miss my handsome Wolf, I got his ashes back from the vet, we will be scattering them in the woods and on the meadow he loved to run in probably in spring when the weather improves. I have decided not to get another dog to go with Kai although I loved having my two boys. It was easier walking them when my husband was alive and since being on my own I had to walk them separately as if they decided to “go” I would not have been able to hold them back. They only got out together at weekends when I had someone to walk them with me.

So all in all hopefully things are starting to improve a little and although we are both still sad we can get on with our new life together.

  9. I had spaghetti on toast for my lunch (only with a fried egg). My toaster had a lot of attitude today, it shot the toast out at high speed, one slice I managed to catch the other ended up bouncing off the worktop onto the floor. It has never done it before, gave it a glare and a severe talking to. Hopefully it will have calmed down tomorrow.

  10. It must have gone into the same black hole that a very expensive laptop I ordered for my late husband disappeared into. That arrived at their depot never to be seen again. Luckily the seller sent us another one, I presume he was insured, but he sent it by another carrier with no problem.

  11. It said not to make a fuss of him when he was crying/howling so as not to reinforce the behaviour. I must admit I do console him, he is hurting as well as me and it seems cruel not to when he is upset. He has settled down for his nap now, hopefully he will eat something tonight he wasnt interested last nite and I didn’t force him. Think it will be chicken tonight, a bit of spoiling is in order.

  12. Kai and I have been out for our first solo walk to the park. Don’t know if it was a good idea to take him there as we went with Wolf quite a bit. I took him on the flexi lead, didn’t let him off lead as he was looking round all the while we were on there possibly expecting to see Wolf and I was worried he might take off to look for him. When we got back and I took his lead off he rushed in like he did when I had both boys to tell Wolf where he had been. It made me cry. I then had half an hour of him crying which was heartbreaking. I have looked up advice on how to deal with him and it says not to make a fuss of him when he does this. It is so hard as he is so sad and lost.
I think I will have to find somewhere else to walk him where we haven’t been before for a while until he has adjusted to being on his own. I hate seeing him like this it is so upsetting that I can’t explain what has happened to him.

  13. Thanks for your kind thoughts.

We thought he just had an infection, he had been on antibiotics but was still not right. Went in for more blood tests and then vet decided to do xrays and scans to find out where infection was. Unfortunately scans showed up tumours in his liver and spleen with secondary’s in his chest.
Couldn't believe it as he had shown no signs of anything before this. Two weeks ago we did an 8 mile walk to Wollaton Park and he had a great time. I am just numb with the shock of it.
I have managed to settle Kai down now, he has had something to eat and has finally gone to sleep, I will have to see whether he will be settled all night or not.

  14. Today has gone from a normal day with a routine vet appointment to something horrendous. I have lost my beautiful boy Wolf tonight, I am devastated and heartbroken. How do I explain to his brother, who is sitting looking at me crying because his brother isn’t here, that he is not coming back to us.

  15. I have been ensconced (is that a word?) on the settee, slowly festering, most of the day in my pjs. I did tidy up the house a bit and saw to boys, they really didn’t want to go out this morning. Then we all had a nap. I did feel a dog intently looking at me once or twice but kept my eyes shut and after the inspection they lay down again.
This afternoon I have been listening to podcasts with an accompanying crunching of pigs ears and lamp spaghetti and the occasional cat nap.
As it has been such a dark miserable day it seemed the logical thing to do as I definitely wasn’t going anywhere. I hope the antibiotics will start to kick in a bit tomorrow and I will start to feel a bit better and do a bit more without the wheezing and coughing. I hate chest infections when they make you feel that you can’t breath properly.

  16. Thanks for all the good wishes, hope the tablets work quickly as we are supposed to be exploring Bramcote Park with my boys over the weekend. Certainly could not do a walk at the moment.
I had a little nap this evening, woke up and realised I hadn’t had my tablet and Wolf hadn’t had his either. Went into kitchen got tablets out, got my water and then realised I was just about to take Wolf's tablet. Good job it is bright pink and round, mine are dark green capsules. Much to his disgust I swapped them over and he had crunchy wafer thin ham again.

  17. I had noticed over the past couple of weeks I was getting a bit wheezy but as my sinuses were playing up and dumping gunk down my throat (sorry to be explicit:wacko:) I presumed that was the cause of it as well as my slight cough. However last nite I woke up struggling to breath, bit frightening when you are on your own, and then had a fit of coughing. I ended up going down stairs and spent the rest of the night on my recliner which seemed to help.
Managed to get an appointment with my doctor this morning and took a very slow walk there, felt as if I wasn’t getting enough air somehow and had to sit down on a bench halfway there to get my breath back. It was no surprise to be told I had a chest infection and I have got a weeks supply of tablets that would cure an elephant. Also the “you have stopped smoking” talk. (As a matter of interest I can’t remember having many chest infections when I smoked, but perhaps rose tinted glasses are in play!)
Even slower walk back (but it is uphill), my road seemed to stretch for miles before I got home. Now curled up on settee with a blanket, feeling sorry for myself, eyeing the box of walnut whips I treated myself to. A girl has to have some pleasures!

  18. When we had our black German Shepherd he used to get a lot of water infections and had to be on a special diet for it. As he wouldn’t take tablets at all our vet decided to give us a liquid antibiotic with a syringe to administer it. He showed us how to do it putting the liquid into the side of the mouth and Joe just swallowed it amazingly. It looked really easy and seemed to solve the problem.

However when I tried to do it the liquid ended up all over me as well as the kitchen floor and walls. What was left in his mouth just trickled down his front and I just got that “look” German Shepherds have. In the end we worked out that if we dissolved the tablets in his goats milk and made a big fuss about him having pink milk he would drink it no problem with one of his favourite treats after. Not sure if he ever twigged on about it but it was definitely less traumatic that other options for both of us (probably more me actually I am sure he enjoyed the game).

  19. Got up on Saturday and Wolf wasn’t his usual bouncy self. He was shivering and didn’t look well at all (I know sounds silly but I could tell by his face he wasn't well.)

Had a cup of tea and kept an eye on him for a bit as the vet didn’t open until 8. I decided to take him and when I got the lead out Kai went into walk mode but there was no reaction from Wolf at all. We had a really slow walk to the vets, usually he likes to look inside every gate and can pull a bit but I felt almost as if I was dragging him along. When we got to the vets he wasn’t interested in any other dogs and just laid down and went to sleep.
When we got into see the vet she examined him but couldn’t find anything. I knew what was coming next, because they are 9 going on 10 we started the “joint talk”. On the odd occasion I do have to take either to the vets this always comes up and they want to start them on painkillers. I told her he had showed no signs of having any trouble with his joints (we have always had big dogs and I have seen the signs before) even after an 8 mile walk. So she took him in the back to do a blood test, I was a bit upset when she brought him back to me as he had a muzzle on and was a bit distressed. I told her I could have held his head and they could have done the blood test without the muzzle as I have done this before with our other vet.

Anyway they rang me on Sunday morning with the results, she said the results were amazing, don’t know why, but it had picked up an infection so he needed a course of antibiotics, no mention of painkillers! Unfortunately when I got up on Sunday morning I had got a really heavy cold so wasn’t able to pick them up that day, thankfully he was a lot better.
Picked them up this morning, they are like elephant tablets so am having to break them into 4 pieces, bought a couple of packs of wafer thin ham to wrap them. So battle commenced to get a tablet down him. I tried wrapping the piece of tablet in 1, 2 and 3 pieces of ham but he can still eat the ham and spit the tablet on the floor. The pack says they are palatable beef flavour but Wolf doesn’t seem to agree. As I was also having to give Kai ham as well the first pack was disappearing fast. (Pity I can’t claim on the insurance for the packs of ham.)
I finally gave him a tablet in 2 pieces of ham and said in my best Barbara Woodhouse voice “eat it all”, he gave me a long hard stare and then made a right performance of chomping up the tablet but at least I got the first one down him only 13 more to go. So if there is a scarcity (spelling?) of wafer thin ham I’m afraid I am to blame and apologise now!
