  1. Uk are doing a trial about mixing vaccines. Nottingham University is asking for volunteers to take part in the trials at the moment. Just want to get my second jab next week hopefully.

Spoken to my friend in Doncaster today. Her and her mother were supposed to have second Pfizer jab last Thursday. They still haven’t had it with no idea of when they will get it.

  2. I can remember going to Roughtons, up near Canning Circus if I remember correctly, to buy material for dresses, skirts etc. They cut off the amount you wanted from a large bale. Also the Rubber Supply Company which sold shoes. I can remember going there with my mum to get my first pair of high boots in the 60’s. I loved those boots wore them until they dropped to bits. Like Mary1947 I can remember the shoe shops on Clumber Street, Saxons, Dolcis, there was one that began with an M was it Manfreds - not sure.
C&A for the latest mod fashions, you didn’t want to pay too much as the fashion changed so quickly.

  3. I thought that I might get bored when I retired having worked all my adult life from the age of 16. I was made redundant at 60 as the firm I walked for was bought over by another and moved to Billingham from Doncaster so I was retired by circumstances really. I did get a part time job at the small local McColls (which some weeks was nearly full time as I was called in when needed especially as I tended to do the evening shift). When I moved back here I decided I had done my bit and decided to retire, although I do have an occasional job as an invigilator at a local school (whenever exams start again) the bit of extra money comes in handy.

I must say I have enjoyed most of it, lockdown did scupper it a bit with my social clubs not being able to meet but hey ho it is what it is. I have been able to indulge in my hobbies. Knitting (I have a wardrobe full of jumpers, cardigans etc), cross stitch and crocheting, reading I had forgotten how much I enjoy it. I also discovered podcasts which was a revelation.  I do a bit of gardening - well growing plants in pots - and of course spending more time with my boys until January and am looking forward to the end of April when Jj will arrive. I still go for walks, go regularly to Wollaton Park and the woods where we walked my boys which was bittersweet at first but now brings back good memories of them playing there.

It is also nice to be able to have “lazy days” when I just don’t do much at all and I must say when the weather has not been good pj days when I just slob around and watch rubbish on telly.
I go and see friends (when allowed at present) obviously sitting in the garden well wrapped up and am hopefully looking forward to my social clubs being able to meet sometime in the future although I have a feeling it might not be for a while. I do have the occasional day where I get a bit fed up but think that is probably due to lockdown etc which has limited me somewhat.
So Totongirl enjoy, it gives you a new lease on life as it is your time to do what you want to do.

  4. Reading reports that some people are having their appointments cancelled for their second Pfizer jab as it is “not available”, I presume they will have to make another appointment which means they will be over the 12 weeks. It is just the Pfizer jab from what I have seen and not the AZ one. It is suggested it is a distribution problem although I would have thought they would have this sorted at this stage of the vaccination programme. Makes me wonder if they do have enough to cover those who have had the first jab. Bit worrying as I don’t fancy being a guinea pig to see if two different jabs work:sickly:

  5. 9 hours ago, Brew said:

A classmate took the end of his finger off on  one of those... they don't mess about!

I was working at Woolworths on Hyson Green (I miss their pick & Mix!) when the girl who worked on the food counter cut her hand on the bacon slicer. It was horrendous never seen so much blood which wasn’t good as it makes me feel faint. Had to go to the staff room to lie down for a while, wasn’t the only one either.

  6. Any death is sad for family and friends no matter who they are. I must admit I do not have any feelings either way about this, I neither knew him nor took much notice of him to be honest. I do agree the award scheme he started has done good work. I do wonder how many other 99 year olds would have had heart surgery but perhaps that is just me being cynical!

To those that are Royalist supporters it must be sad but I must admit I am glad I have the Sky channels so I can get away from the terrestrial channels who do seem to be wallowing in it a bit. Sorry.

  7. Although it could be construed as a bit “naff” I love the John Wayne cowboy films (not so much the ones where he wins WWII by himself), The Searchers, True Grit, She Wore A Yellow Riibbon etc. He just epitomised a cowboy for me with that walk, just seemed so right.

The original Magnificent Seven is brilliant and the Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns aren’t bad, the shooting of the gun fights are brilliant with the shots of just the eyes.
I can vaguely remember Roy Rogers and Hopalong Cassidy, they had tv series I think. Then there was Wagon Train which was on Monday nights at 8 in the evening I think, I can remember my dad putting his feet Up and watching it along with Rawhide (starring a very young Clint Eastwood). Whoa betide you if you interrupted the programme! I can also remember watching Maverick, I preferred the ones with a James Garner(?)in them not the other guy. Was that on on a Sunday afternoon - not sure.

  8. Heaven was sitting on the bench at the edge of the woods, which were covered in bluebells and full of birdsong, watching my two boys playing together on the meadow without a care in the world. Coming back to us for a drink of water and a fuss before going to play again.

  9. On the roof they won’t Radfordred. But they were partying, go to Nottinghamshire Live and see what the residents of Lenton are saying about the amount of partying going on there and the number police have had to break up. That is what will spread it. Common sense needs to prevail among a small minority.
I have no quarrel with the demonstrators at all, the bill they are demonstrating against isn’t good. As to getting back to normal I can’t wait hope it is sooner rather than later.

  10. Read today that the area I live in is now classed as being a “virus suppressed” area of which there are 25 around Nottingham. There is another one a bit further down the estate which was really bad at one time. Some good news for a change hopefully it will spread to the rest of Nottingham and surrounding areas.
Not so sure about Lenton after the latest video showing students doing handstands and running about on the roofs of houses there!! Idiots.

  11. I see a couple in Nottingham have won the £10,000 a month for 30 years Prize on the lottery. Well done them, hope they really make the most if it and enjoy it and we won’t in a few years see articles saying how the lottery win ruined their lives. That drives me mad.

Upon reflection about winning something like that (the most I win is a lucky dip so don’t think I would ever have that problem) I don’t think I would opt for publicity, in fact I know I wouldn’t. If others in our syndicate wanted it then that is up to them but I would rather keep it private . If it was a big jackpot win there are obviously people In my life who I would help and my favourite charities obviously.

I would get a nice bungalow, or even have one built to my specifications, nothing big or grandiose with a bit of land for my dog(s) to run in. Not having to worry about any bills coming in would be nice as well so I could put the heating on instead of wearing thermals and an extra jumper!
Nice bit of daydreaming for such a miserable day.

  12. Watched Midsummer Murders last night on catch up. Enjoy it, always think it is a “gentle” murder series if you see what I mean.

I am also watching Peaky Blinders box set as well. Wasn’t very impressed after the first episode but stuck with it and am enjoying it now. I find I am watching more and more box sets recently as there doesn’t seem much of interest on at the moment even though I have Sky, or possibly because I have Sky.
Watch quite a bit on Dave, QI, which I love, such a lot of useless information can be gleaned from it, Would I Lie to You and Have I Got News For You, although I find one of the team captains a bit annoying sometimes, not Ian thingy the other one. Quite like a Taskmaster for a bit of silliness as well.

I don’t watch soaps or reality tv and since I had Sky Sports taken off my package as it was a quarter of the price haven’t seen any of WWE for ages which I used to enjoy. (I know, I know it was all fake, but just look at some of the hunks that were faking it and having been to a live show or two In England I can tell you they look even better in real life:rolleyes:.)

  13. We always had books at home, my dad encouraged us to read. The first book that really got me interested in reading was The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe. At Glenbrook Girls Junior School on Friday afternoons Miss Walton would read a chapter of a book to us, more years ago than I care to remember. This is where a I first came across it. Told my dad about it and he went out and got the whole “box set” of them. I read them all although the above one was always my favourite. If there is an adaptation of it on the telly (which there hasn’t been for a while, don’t they do things like that now for kids) I always watch it, the story just never seems to lose its magic.

I still love reading, have a kindle which has been useful during lockdown, there are a lot of free books on there although I do very occasionally pay for one if it isn’t too expensive. But I must say I do prefer to have a “proper” book from the library just seems better turning the pages somehow rather than just clicking a screen!  I usually go for crime, horror (mostly ghostly) or true crime (serial killers usually they fascinate me - a profile of my reading habits could be a problem!) and the occasional humorous one. But then I also like Pride and Prejudice (Wasn’t it Colin Firth as Mr D’Arcy who caused a stir in the swimming scene:biggrin:).
I do like a book that grabs you so you don’t want to put it down. If I can put it down easily and walk away I am not really enjoying it. I hope the library opens up again soon, missed browsing there.

  14. I am classed as borderline overactive and only take 5mg tablets every day. They were cut down to every other day last year as I had stabilised but then after a few months had a “wobble” so back to one a day. (I was really stressed about a relative and their working conditions with the virus, don’t know if that caused it or not. Although it was mentioned at the time I was diagnosed about the stress of my husbands final illness and then his death two weeks after my mum died possibly being an original trigger.)
When I have my telephone appointments with the hospital they do keep mentioning the radioactive treatment but I don’t want to go there If at all possible. Got another appointment next month with the consultant so as I have been stable for a while (readings within ranges) I am hoping to try and cut the tablets down again. The consultant did say they would try to get me off the tablets and that my thyroid could right itself.

  15. Whilst having my morning coffee I have been ruminating over the past extrodinary and horrendous year.
When we first heard about the virus I think we presumed it would be like SARS and just affect China but be brought under control and wouldn't be a problem. Then we started seeing the first pictures from Italy, Still seemed a long way away and it didn’t seem like it would affect us. Then as the pictures got worse and worse and the death toll started to mount we had a discussion about getting face masks. It seemed an overreaction at the time but we decided to get a box each “just in case”. Little did we know.

It then spread across Europe and eventually cases started springing up here, I started to notice the odd person wearing a mask but didn’t myself at that time it seemed a bit extreme.
When the numbers started to increase and we were told the “elderly” were at greater risk I didn’t think it applied to me I didn’t consider myself elderly but after a conversation with family members realised I was, bit of a shock to the system.
We then found filtered masks on the internet, got a couple of N95 I think they were with the vents (not very comfortable to wear) and eventually found double layer fabric masks with a replaceable filter so stocked up on those. We were being told masks made no difference at that time so they were easy to get. I then started to wear them when I went out, got some funny looks, and cut down on my trips out.
Then we went into the first lockdown. I must admit I thought we would do this for 12 weeks or whatever and it would be over and we could go back to normal. I had lost Wolf the December before all this started but still had Kai so was able to get out with him and we did have some long conversations (albeit one sided) which he completely understood!
Now here we are 12 months on, in another semi-lockdown, half vaccinated, with so many people being lost It doesn’t bear thinking about and cases still quite high. Europe appears to be having a second wave which doesn’t bode well at all and in somewhat of a mess with their vaccination programme (which it appears is all our fault because ours seems to be going quite well at the moment and we should immediately stop and give them our vaccines so they can leave them in their fridges as it is rubbish anyway and no one wants them).
I didn’t really have a “big” life before all this started. I was just starting to go out more since moving back here, had made some good friends and was starting to feel settled. Didn’t ask for much, just being able to go to town on the tram (which I love - the noise doesn’t bother me at all) and have a rummage thru Primark and the bling shop in the Vic Centre, going for a pot of tea in Birds with one of their expensive sandwiches. Going to my 2 social clubs with a meal at the local pub after the Friday one, being able to give them a hug. A trip to Matlock Bath in the summer to browse the shops and buy stuff I really didn’t need. Being with family members when work permitted. It wasn’t an exciting jet setting lifestyle but I was happy and content with it. Losing Kai was a body blow which has taken some time to come to terms with, I did rely on him for company during the past year and still miss him desperately.
I get my second jab next month, to be honest I don’t know how much difference this will make to the things I do or more to the point don’t do. Time will tell I suppose.

  16. I see the EU’s once again demanding supplies of AZ from the UK and is also threatening export bans to countries that have a successful vaccination policy (ie us).
You just could not make this up, firstly claiming the AZ jab wasn’t very good on people over 60, then wondering why no one in the EU seemed to want it leaving millions of doses of the vaccine not being used with people not turning up for their appointments etc. Now they have suspended use of it when the Pfizer one has a record of more cases of blood clots although still minimal. The Johnston & Johnston one which they have passed (good on them) has to go to the USA to be bottled apparently and they have an export ban on vaccines so it is possible they might not get them back. The USA has already declined Their request to “borrow” vaccines.  Defeat snatched from the jaws of victory?

I did vote to leave the EU but it gives no pleasure to see the debacle unfolding there at the moment (thank goodness we went our own way on vaccines despite the government taking flak when it did this, one of the few things they seem to have got right).

I just hope it can be sorted as all peoples need access to the vaccine to fight against this thing but they do seem to be floundering around from one crisis to another whilst numbers are once again spiralling up in Europe and blaming those who have a successful vaccination programme initiated and the drug companies (especially AZ - don’t bite the hand that feeds you!) for their woes.
We really need them to get their house in order quickly as possible now, we definitely don’t want another wave “imported” from the continent and surely the longer this virus is out of control in some countries it becomes more likely a variant will occur which will bypass the present miraculous vaccines. I have read their is possibly one that will give a negative result in the present test being investigated at the moment which is a daunting prospect.

I thought swiftqueue was a nationwide website, if not it should be it is so easy to use.
