  1. Remember the christmas's we had in the 60,s when we lived in st anns, we were poor but i don't know how but our parents always managed to buy us toys and stuff , not easy when you have 4 kids .

We had to go to bed early on Christmas eve , and our Dear old mum would say go to sleep and see wot santa brings you in the morning .

I was so excited to sleep so had to pretend , and had to stifle a giggle ,when i heard my dad creep in the bedroom and put a plastic bag full of goodies on the bed , i knew it wasnt santa cos i don't think he rolls his own golden virginia tobacco !

That year  it snowed very heavy about 2 foot of the stuff, but that didnt deter me and me brother kev dressed up in our cowboy gear guns and all,

I said come on stand up there about 12 feet apart on Leicester street , st anns , i said one the count of three we will have a gunfight , just then a man with a dog walked by , it was a great bloomin big saint bernard dog , which put both paws on kevs shoulders and licked his face , but burying him in the snow at the same time , happy days !!!!

I was confused and said , Dad why we've got one in the bathroom , good job he didnt ask me to nip out and get a star , i was only 3 foot 2 inches  , couldn't of reached if i wanted to !!!

  3. In the 70,s used to pinch the horseracing page out the back of my Dad's Nottingham evening post , any horseracing enthusiast will remember Donovans selections , when i was at school in Bilborough (Denewood crescent ) i got caught by the teacher ,ticking off my horse selections , can you still buy the Nottingham evening post nowadays ?

For anyone with roots in Bilborough, or indeed anyone who may be interested, There is a very lively local history society which meets in St. Martin of Tours church every 2nd Wednesday evening of the month and every 4th Wednesday afternoon of the month. The Afternoon meetings are mostly open discussions and at present we are taking one road per meeting and evoking memories. We have already done Strelley Road, Wigman Road, Bracebridge Drive and last month did the industrial units on Glaisdale Drive. The next afternoon meeting is on 26th April from 2:30pm until 4:30pm. We will be remembering the Denewood Crescent area from the fifties and sixties. The evening meetings are usually talks which incur a small charge - 2 pounds or a pound for concessions. We have one on 12th April which is Coal Mining in the Leen Valley, by Dave Amos. It is from 7:30pm until 9:30pm.

We have acquired a huge archive which is at present being sorted by members. We also have the chance of acquiring the nearby farmhouse from the local authority which can be used for events etc.

We also have various activities like the Saturday local history day which we displayed various archive to the local public, visits to the central library and many other events.

Much of this is centered around the St. Martin's hidden treasures project which was funded by the National Lottery Heritage funds. From this we were able to restore the church, install heating and bring back to life the Evelyn Gibbs murals.  We are open each Friday and Saturday to visitors who wish to see the Evelyn Gibbs Murals and hear the history of the church. There is also opportunity to become one of the Friends of St. Martin's Church.  There is so much happening and members can be involved in as much or as little as they want.

You mention Denewood crescent , i lived there in the 70,s , the top end near strelley rd ? I attend a school on the same crescent , but vague to what it was called ,

I had a good mate called Peter foster in broxtowe , he had a sister jackie or jaqui Foster i fancied her like mad,

At school there was a big fat lad who want to fight little scrawny me ( brave kid ! ) i alway remember his name Timothy  large hence the name fat lad , i attended there when Chelsea and Leeds united were in the cup final .

  5. @MargieH he certainly was , i suspect he grew up to be a policeman, Doctor, or pastor , i hop he succeeded anyway , that day the 3 bullies planned to doing something horrible to me on the way home from school, then i heard a voice behind say , leave him alone , he put his arm around my shoulder in a protective way , and the bullies faded away , it's strange our God steps in sometimes , anyway the do say the Lord has a plan for , which i truly believe !

There were a lot of things in kit form, ie everything you needed to make the product pictured on the box, in the 60s. I remember Promise, lemon meringue pie. Think they did other desserts as well. Birds trifle kits etc. Probably full of the now banned hydrogenated fats!

Smash dried potato and Marvel milk was, I suppose, only like the stuff available during the war. Don't remember seeing any powdered egg though.

Jill, i remember that birds eye trifle mix, we used too have it for sunday tea , the custard put me off abit but it was a good pudding ,but not as good as me Dad's ho.e made rice pudding baked in the oven !!

I was a bit apprehensive about mentioning it, Ben, as thought perhaps Marsden's was a bit too high class to stock tinned steak & kidney pies/puds or common corned beef!

    ;)

It was fray bentos tinned steak pie , once afew of us lads camped out at bulwell hall park remember those disused railway embankments ? Some one said there was a ghost train at midnight , we camped out we had a fray bentos pie with no tin opener to open that flat round tin , and no idea how to cooking it , funny old days them 70,s were !!!

Good morning to you too BK.

and just to keep on topic…… I actually dislike pork pie, for breakfast, lunch, dinner or for a snack between meals.  It’s mainly the jelly I find unpleasant but also the colour…. The pastry is nice though!

Love the pastry ate the jelly !!!!!

  9. Me and my brother went morley senior , we used to get bullied alot for some reason my tormentors were Ian campbell, a fat lad Gary something or other and a skinny kid who was called Cliff, i punched him in the face because i was tired of the  bullying,  we turned out as mates as i remember going for tea at his house,

Also my brother kevin had an indian sweetheart there , can't remember her name maybe jitra ?

There was one lad who walked me home protecting me from the bullies his name was robert ? Armstrong.
