  1. I would put money on that not being your SMP maths book. I was not an avid fan either but it did get us out of school and lessons for a few hours.
  2. @Jill Sparrowre your post yesterday and manning having their swimming gala at the victoria baths. If i remember rightly the pool and spectator area were bigger at victoria than at noel st. In my time St Davids always won the swimming gala. I also remember when my grandparents lived on manchester st (which was a stones throw from the baths) in the late 60's my grandad used to go to watch wrestling there. As an aside i read an article a couple of years ago although i cant recall where, that in 1918 during the spanish flu pandemic the pools were drained and used for storing bodies due to the
  3. If it was state control we would all be being forced to watch the coverage, we are not. Which is the point i was making in my original post, we all have choices. And this is the last i will be saying on the subject as i feel that an obituary is not the place for debating this.
  4. @Alpha I completely agree that the events you highlight, war in Europe, cost of living etc, are newsworthy issues. However over the last 70 years events such as these have come and gone and now are back again. Constant though, during these difficult times has been The Queen and this, coupled with the fact that she was the Head of State, not only for us but also for many commonwealth countries, and is held in high regard throughout most of the world, justifies the blanket media coverage
  5. Whether you are in favour of the monarchy or not, the death of our Queen is a monumental historical event, not only here in Britain but all around the world. There are plenty of other tv channels nowadays if you dont want to watch it, or you could do what I do when any kind of sport comes on which I have zero interest in, I hit the off button!
  6. Spot on jill, whether you are a royalist or not there is no denying that she was an incredible lady.

    The Queen

Just saw on the tv the queen has died. RIP.
  8. @BeekayYes i was thinking when i read your post that even the deep end was only around six/six & a half feet deep, and they must have got rid of the diving boards at some point as there were none there when i used to go in the early 70's.
  9. You naughty boy bk, saw a few lads do that when i used to go swimming there as a kid and saw a few thrown out by the attendant for doing it too. It was quite a height to jump or dive from as well as i remember.
  10. As for school dinners i never had them glad to say, i dont know what they served up but the really revolting smell that wafted from that area was enough to make even the strongest stomach churn.
  11. @katyjaynothing much changed at noel st baths even in the mid 70's when we had our swimming lessons from manning there, same cold footbaths, cold showers and changing rooms and the pool was always very cold too. I used to dread swimming lessons.
  12. @Jill Sparrowwe used to joke that we were kindly given those tiny bits of soap after they were no longer usable by the staff in their facitities. Dont think i ever saw a whole bar of soap in the five years i was there.
  13. I used to do all of my shopping in Bulwell when we lived in Old Basford 86-96. It was a good shopping area and easy for me to walk there and back with 2 young kids and a pushchair, as back then you had to take your child out & fold the pushchair up to get on the bus. It had a good variety of shops, banks and a great market. My dad still shops there. It still seems to be a thriving shopping area unlike a lot of other places where the majority of shops are either empty or boarded up.
  14. As jill said no such luxury at manning, i dont think even the wash basins in the toilets had "hot"water, the nearest thing to showers at manning was when the wind blew rain in through the gaps in the french doors.
  15. Yes it was, a couple of the worst things i remember re how cold the place was are getting changed for games lessons in winter & also that freezing cold footbath when you did dance lessons .
  16. Yes it was very basic both the building & the equipment, when friends i had at other schools used to tell me the kind of equipment they had it made manning sound like colditz.
  17. @Jill Sparrowthank you for the info jill, i do remember the brincliffe girls joining us as a lot of them still wore their green uniforms for a while, i did say to hey arnold that it may have by then needed a lot of repair & upgrading so more cost effective to demolish it & start again. I did notice from viewing the site on google earth that the djanogly building is much smaller than the origional school was. Thanks again for the info it has answered a few questions for us. In my days there the boys were at claremont school at the top of stanley road & woe betide if you were ca
  18. @Jill Sparrowhi jill was having a discussion with hey arnold earlier today about schools, he asked me if i knew why the manning had moved to aspley when it did & the gregory boulevard building demolished, as it was not really that old, said i didn't but knew a lady who would more than likely know any info please jill thanks.
  19. @Jill Sparrowdont forget David cassidy, bet his pic was on a few jotters too? it was in my year.
  20. Couldn't agree more lizzie & in my opinion its one of the reasons why our ex service personnel & oap's have to rely on charity to help them out in their time of need.
  21. Same here jill & when we found ourselves struggling with a toddler & only one wage coming in i took on a bar job three evenings a week to give us a bit of extra income. Wouldn't have dreamt of asking for handouts which is what everyone seems to expect nowadays.
  22. @LizzieM sounds like a fabulous event and i applaud you & your friends, but also think its shameful that even nowadays our injured servicemen & women have to rely on charity to help them in their hour of need. When they have given so much for their country it gives them so little in return.
  23. Aww david essex i had posters of him all over my bedroom walls as a teenage girl, used to love when jackie magazine had him on a double page in the centre, i went with a school friend to the pictures to see him in that'll be the day & stardust, we both came out totally in love with him.
  24. @Cliff Tonthanks for that ct, i knew i had seen that thread somewhere, i probably couldn't find it as i was searching in the wollaton threads for it & i see there are already photos of the memorial on there so if you want to delete mine please do thankyou.
