  1. Hi, I lived on Valley Road near the High School playing fields and in the early/mid 50's there was a similar described chap used to walk past the house early in the morning, he used to scare me, swearing and jumping around, I think he had ginger hair. Apparently there was a hostel type place up the road at the City Hospital where he used to stay and then they kicked him out early doors.
  2. I dug these out today. I can't recall what they cost me, but they are sterling silver and there were 500 minted. I must try and get a value. I was a member at the time before the club went public.
  3. I've now downloaded Google Chrome, thanks. Martyn
  4. I downloaded Google Chrome a while ago and it is a lot faster then Internet Explorer, but I can't watch any racing replay videos with it. I have since downloaded Mozilla Firefox, which is quicker than either although taking me a little while to get used to it. If Google Chrome is likely to be a problem I will get rid of it. Thanks for the warning. Martyn.
  5. Our local Co-op was at the junction of Valley Road and Hucknall Road, I last used it at least 50 years ago. 119101 Etched in my brain along with my army number, 23733733. Regards to all.
  6. This website of my distant cousins may be of interest to you. http://www.chamberlains.me.uk:80/ss/ My mother was Olive Elvin who's father was John Shipstone, he was one of the 3 founders of Cox Moore Hosiery Co. Martyn
  7. I was away in the army 1959 to 1962, but came back home for 3 years. I do remember 2 brothers who lived along there, they would fit the height, I was 6ft 4ins then and 2 years older than he would be. These 2 brothers used to drink at the Fox with their Dad. Mind you, I think they could have been a bit older?
  8. Doesn't ring a bell, unless he delivered beer at home! Where did he live and about what age?
  9. Hi Ashley, I used to spend many hours playing! up on the banks alongside the track. The shops were, Lawrence's? Post Office and woolshop, a green grocers who's name escapes me at the moment. Cheers, Martyn
  10. Hi Dick, We lived at no 258 which was 3 houses from Ventnor towards the High School playing fields. I left there permanently in 1965 to join Leicester Police, but we only sold the house about 4 and half years ago. Would you have been near to the Bowers and the Meakins? Regards, Martyn.
  11. I lived on Valley Road, just around the corner from Ventnor Rise in the 50's and early 60's. Went to Scotland Place School and used to hang around on the Park between Ventnor and Harmston Rise. Friends included, Roger Eley, Geoff Marshall, Pete Orme, Dave Kemp, Sid Sheldon, Knopper Dickens, Chris and Gerald Wilson, Charlie Bowers etc. I think the Park Keeper at the time was Mr Jackson, "Jacko". Happy? days. Regards, Martyn E
  12. Still do, Used to be with a Pork Farms pie in the old days when they were edible, but now for me it has to be a Dickinson & Morris's Melton pie. Seasons greetings to all, Martyn
  13. Does anyone recall the Craggs? As I've mentioned before, my local in the early 60's was the Royal Oak. My drinking buddies were amongst others, Ron and Sheila Cragg, and Ron's brother Tom and his wife Vera, they both had daughters who's names escape me at the moment. They lived just behind the Oak somewhere and I lived down Valley Road. Regards.
  14. Apologies if this is old hat to you, but we watched the whole interview and music today for the very first time and found it very moving. Try and sit through the whole 11 minutes or so. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/10242008/watch3.html Regards, Martyn.
  15. Thank you for your replies. I will install it now.
  16. Windows service pack 3 was downloaded into my laptop this morning, I have not installed yet. I have Windows XP installed. Does anyone know if there are any problems after installing this and is it totally safe? Many thanks.
  17. Thanks, but I think I will live with it, I have too many remembered ones to delete them all. Regards.
  18. Could you please help? How do you cancel a windows remembered password, or alter it? I mistakenly clicked for my password to be remembered, but had missed one letter out of my user name. I don't know how to get into windows passwords. Can I ammend that remembered user name? Thank you.
  19. Hi Bill, Cowley Street, that sounds like it, was it a very steep incline? Was the wood yard the one on Valley Road opposite the Futurist? I remember we used to go in there at night and climb up the mountains of planks, I used to go to Scotland Place school just along. I believe there was a fire in the yard around then, but nothing to do with me Guv, honest. I actually lived along Valley Road just past Ventnor Rise, but spent a lot of time in Old Basford after being "transferred" from the High Pavement to the Ellis in 56/57. Didn't Malc live up Stockhill Road / Circus? Cheers mate.
  20. Hi Bill, Yes I remember the names, but can't put faces to them. I don't think I did use the pub, I was only 16 in 1959 and went into the army as a boy soldier, just as well really. Was there a club or rooms at the top of Carlton Street on a corner? where we used to go and hang around, dance and listen to music some evenings? Do you know what happened to Kenny or Malc, didn't Keith join the army? Kenny could certainly look after himself, the fastest feet around!
  21. In the late 50's during my teen years, I went off tracks for a while and went around with a crowd in that area, any names ring a bell? Kenny Brant who went in the Navy, but later to Lincoln prison after biting a piece of a constables ear off, Malcolm Cotis (aka Bellamy), Alan Glenn and Keith Daws who were in my class at the Ellis. When the wakes was on at Billy B's we used to occupy the walkway at the top of the waltzer steps. We often used to venture to Bulwell and face a crowd led by a man mountain, Big Bev. Fortunately I went into the army in 1959, otherwise?
  22. Although I lived in Valley Road, my local during the early 60's was the Royal Oak, Sherwood Rise, is it still there? The Landlord was a guy called Ken ?? and his wife Doris, he used to work at Oscofts before taking the pub. For some reason we used to stand in the passage when supping.
  23. Hi, Sorry to butt in on your topic, but if I can just put in my 2penneth. My wife was diagnosed with a grade 3 astrocytoma brain tumour at the QMC in January 2003, she had a debaulk operation and a full course of radiotherapy at the City, her prognosis was "up to two years"! she is still here bossing me about, mind you she is Welsh! The point of my comment is, she took part in a European survey regarding the possible causes of brain tumours. The people we spoke with at the time were convinced that digital signals were connected, particularly in the still developing brain, brain tumours in
