I remember Reg very well, first saw his trio playing at a pub on Arkwright street (Meadow Inn?) back end of the 1950s. His (then) drummer, Colin, lived on Nuthall road next to the Red Lion pub and I used to go there and listen to them practice, had a few jam sessions with them too. Whitemoor residents have received a letter from our local councillor informing them that the application re converting the Duke of Nuke into mini market + flats has been 'withdrawn' due to the pressure of the large number of objectors to the proposal, however, I've just heard that a new application has been/is being filed, I won't hold my breath on what happens next! Newcastle Arms has a 'Pub business to let' sign up, and the Park Tavern on Nuthall road is still open, but has a sign saying 'For Sale' as a 'Development opportunity'.

Sounds a bit like the Lord Nelson on Percy Street Old Basford only it's not 'attached' to any buildings, took some photo's today, but don't know how to load/post them here. Google, 'lord nelson pub percy street nottingham', a map should appear, click on the pubs name to the right of the map and you should get 'StreetView' scenes of the pub. If it works, you can travel all round Basford/Whitemoor see all the other pubs, Swan, Fox n Crown, Hoss n Jockey, Duke of Nuke etc, And, a great shot of the Barleycorn just before it was demolished.

The Newcastle Arms only has one room open regulary now, it is a drugs den/stolen property outlet and my guess is that the Police will apply for its licence to be revoked soon due to the large number of violent disturbances there connected to drug deals etc. Katyjay, I used to deliver papers on Marlow ave as a lad, last house on the right, could never resist the urge to climb on the wall and look at the raised tombs and graves! No definite news on the Duke yet, but the petition has very strong backing against the Mini market plans, more later.

Yep, it would be the late 50s when I used to walk Captain, sometimes on the park, and I'm sure he was still around when I moved from Basford to Bulwell in the mid 60s. His owner was disabled with a very bad leg, (possible accident/war injury?) and a lad about the same age as me (17 at the time) lived with him, dunno if it was his son or other relative, he was often out with the dog.

We little 'orrors on Westgate (owd Basford) used to go Bull Roarin', stuff newspaper up the metal drainpipes on the houses and light it, made a terrifying noise, especially if it was windy, and there were covered entrys between the terraced houses which echoed very loudly, we'd chuck bangers down them and the noise was like a bomb going off. Also if any old goat upset any of us we would leave a full dustbin tipped against their door with the lid off then knock and run like hell, bleddy demonic we were lol.

The first house to the right of the shop, (where the 'Walls' sign is) I remember a man who lived there and had a 'Huge' black Great Dane named Captain, he used to let me take the dog for a walk...or rather he let the dog take Me for a drag, LOL. The last house on the right of the picture, which was next to Stevo's, I remember a girl named Christine Culley lived there, used to join our gang playing on Billy Bacons and Basford United football ground.

The Duke has been bought by a local shopkeeper who intends turning it into a mini supermarket with flats above, there is strong opposition to the plans and locals have petitioned against it, will let you know the outcome in the next few weeks. Saddly now the White Swan has closed down and that too is being converted into 'living accommodation'. Dunno what's happening to the Lord Nelson but there's a sign outside saying 'Cafe & Take Away' open 10am till 6pm !!!! Finally, the Newcastle Arms is said to be the next to go.

Hi there Truckstop, been 'off air' for a while, just passing through and spotted your post. I remember a Jean Cross from the late 1950s, worked at Spray and Burgass [formerly Murry Bros] on Leonard street Bulwell. She had a lovely mass of blonde hair in a 'bouffant/beehive' style, slim build, very attractive gal, about 5ft 4". If this sounds like her then she's still around, I sometimes see her in Morrisons and on Bulwell market.

Hi Sam: Only just seen this thread: I remember a few of the Sandersons family in Old Basford [up to the mid 60's] Lol [Laurence?] Sanderson was a big lad, he had a younger sister, can't remember her name, his mum was a smallish woman with very light brown hair, wore glasses, they lived on Queens street close to the Bates family [Ada, Albert, Cyril?] and used to go in the Horse 'n' Jockey pub on Mill st [among other pubs in Basford] I believe they had connections with a family named 'Large', Betty, and Cyril? are the only names I can recall of that family though, they were Large by name, and

Knew him very well Alan, I used to play cards/dominoes with me mates in the Oxford mid week, a lot of them worked on the buses and it was their nearest watering hole when they finished their shift.

Will do Alan, dunno when I'll see him though, sightings of Dave are few and far between even though he's just down the road from me. Hmm, Alan Knight, that name registers with me, can't put a face to it though, long shot...any relation to Jack Knight, former landlord of the Oxford pub on Highbury Vale ?

Ashley: I can't remember any pub on Nottm rd, and the only one I can think of close to Whitemoor rd was the Barley Mow, but that was more on Basford rd. The Old English Gentleman was on Browns Croft, see pic NTGM000261 on Picture the past it shows the pub on the left, halfway up.
