  1. I remember Reg very well, first saw his trio playing at a pub on Arkwright street (Meadow Inn?) back end of the 1950s. His (then) drummer, Colin, lived on Nuthall road next to the Red Lion pub and I used to go there and listen to them practice, had a few jam sessions with them too. I was inspired by Reg and formed a skiffle group, and later a rock n roll band in the 60s and we played in the back room at the Bleachers Arms on Lincoln street Old Basford for several years. For some reason, don't know what, the trio split and Reg teamed up with a small guy and became the Reg Guest Duo, they app
  2. Whitemoor residents have received a letter from our local councillor informing them that the application re converting the Duke of Nuke into mini market + flats has been 'withdrawn' due to the pressure of the large number of objectors to the proposal, however, I've just heard that a new application has been/is being filed, I won't hold my breath on what happens next! Newcastle Arms has a 'Pub business to let' sign up, and the Park Tavern on Nuthall road is still open, but has a sign saying 'For Sale' as a 'Development opportunity'.
  3. Sounds a bit like the Lord Nelson on Percy Street Old Basford only it's not 'attached' to any buildings, took some photo's today, but don't know how to load/post them here. Google, 'lord nelson pub percy street nottingham', a map should appear, click on the pubs name to the right of the map and you should get 'StreetView' scenes of the pub. If it works, you can travel all round Basford/Whitemoor see all the other pubs, Swan, Fox n Crown, Hoss n Jockey, Duke of Nuke etc, And, a great shot of the Barleycorn just before it was demolished.
  4. The Newcastle Arms only has one room open regulary now, it is a drugs den/stolen property outlet and my guess is that the Police will apply for its licence to be revoked soon due to the large number of violent disturbances there connected to drug deals etc. Katyjay, I used to deliver papers on Marlow ave as a lad, last house on the right, could never resist the urge to climb on the wall and look at the raised tombs and graves! No definite news on the Duke yet, but the petition has very strong backing against the Mini market plans, more later.
  5. Yep, it would be the late 50s when I used to walk Captain, sometimes on the park, and I'm sure he was still around when I moved from Basford to Bulwell in the mid 60s. His owner was disabled with a very bad leg, (possible accident/war injury?) and a lad about the same age as me (17 at the time) lived with him, dunno if it was his son or other relative, he was often out with the dog.
  6. We little 'orrors on Westgate (owd Basford) used to go Bull Roarin', stuff newspaper up the metal drainpipes on the houses and light it, made a terrifying noise, especially if it was windy, and there were covered entrys between the terraced houses which echoed very loudly, we'd chuck bangers down them and the noise was like a bomb going off. Also if any old goat upset any of us we would leave a full dustbin tipped against their door with the lid off then knock and run like hell, bleddy demonic we were lol.
  7. The first house to the right of the shop, (where the 'Walls' sign is) I remember a man who lived there and had a 'Huge' black Great Dane named Captain, he used to let me take the dog for a walk...or rather he let the dog take Me for a drag, LOL. The last house on the right of the picture, which was next to Stevo's, I remember a girl named Christine Culley lived there, used to join our gang playing on Billy Bacons and Basford United football ground.
  8. The Duke has been bought by a local shopkeeper who intends turning it into a mini supermarket with flats above, there is strong opposition to the plans and locals have petitioned against it, will let you know the outcome in the next few weeks. Saddly now the White Swan has closed down and that too is being converted into 'living accommodation'. Dunno what's happening to the Lord Nelson but there's a sign outside saying 'Cafe & Take Away' open 10am till 6pm !!!! Finally, the Newcastle Arms is said to be the next to go.
  9. Hi there Truckstop, been 'off air' for a while, just passing through and spotted your post. I remember a Jean Cross from the late 1950s, worked at Spray and Burgass [formerly Murry Bros] on Leonard street Bulwell. She had a lovely mass of blonde hair in a 'bouffant/beehive' style, slim build, very attractive gal, about 5ft 4". If this sounds like her then she's still around, I sometimes see her in Morrisons and on Bulwell market.
  10. Hi Sam: Only just seen this thread: I remember a few of the Sandersons family in Old Basford [up to the mid 60's] Lol [Laurence?] Sanderson was a big lad, he had a younger sister, can't remember her name, his mum was a smallish woman with very light brown hair, wore glasses, they lived on Queens street close to the Bates family [Ada, Albert, Cyril?] and used to go in the Horse 'n' Jockey pub on Mill st [among other pubs in Basford] I believe they had connections with a family named 'Large', Betty, and Cyril? are the only names I can recall of that family though, they were Large by name, and
  11. Knew him very well Alan, I used to play cards/dominoes with me mates in the Oxford mid week, a lot of them worked on the buses and it was their nearest watering hole when they finished their shift.
  12. Will do Alan, dunno when I'll see him though, sightings of Dave are few and far between even though he's just down the road from me. Hmm, Alan Knight, that name registers with me, can't put a face to it though, long shot...any relation to Jack Knight, former landlord of the Oxford pub on Highbury Vale ?
  13. Thanks for that one Ashley, that Ztan Zmith's a real gem when you wanna no owt abaht owt. !clapping! 1848 ? No wonder I couldn't remember that pub, bit afore me time, 'n' yorn too ah fink...
  14. Ashley: I can't remember any pub on Nottm rd, and the only one I can think of close to Whitemoor rd was the Barley Mow, but that was more on Basford rd. The Old English Gentleman was on Browns Croft, see pic NTGM000261 on Picture the past it shows the pub on the left, halfway up. [This was in the 60's] Can you remember 'Martha' the washerwoman who lived on B-Croft ? Had a huge mangle in her back yard, there was a bit about her in the Basford Bystander recently, brought back memories. I saw a cow being killed at the Church st slaughterhouse when I was a kid, really upset me, and yes it w
  15. Hi there Alan, saw Dave a couple of days ago, he lives about two hundred yds from me, he's a keen gardener and shows flowers and other things he grows on his allotment, the only thing I grow in my garden is....Tired... I think he spent more time in the 'oss 'n' jockey than Bleachers, at least that's where I eyeballed him most.
  16. "can't see many of today's kids doing that".....neither can I Ashley, in fact the majority of the kids, and most adults...[if that term is applicable ?] I see on bikes don't even have both wheels touching the floor, I'm expecting to see Unicycles making a comeback, it'll save pulling the front wheel in the air. LOL ! Re: the cottages on Alpine street, I got it completely wrong, the houses I mentioned are further down, just before the mucky duck pub. Last time down Lincoln street [a few months ago] there was only one shop still trading, that's the cake shop, many years ago it was next to Fran
  17. Ashley: I didn't say Martins didn't make frames, just that his shop was small, but he did have a large garden at the back of his shop with some sheds. With you mentioning 'Jaque Anquetil', and all the jazzy extras on your bike indicates that you're a cycling enthusiast ? As I said, Martins ran a very popular cycling club and there were always lots of cyclists milling around his shop on 'outing days' with some fancy looking bikes. Those houses you mentioned on Alpine street are still there, as are the other buildings opposite, though the old 'Maltings' have been turned into student accomodat
  18. Martyn, Yep, Cowley street is a steep hill, all the streets between Lincoln st and Percy st were steep hills but Cowley was the steepest. As you come along Lincoln st from Basford crossings you get to the old post office where you turn left onto Billy Bacons, Cowley st is directly opposite, halfway up on the left is the Nottm Ambulance Service workshop, at the top on the right is the Lord Nelson pub. After conquering that hill, you need a drink...[any excuse for a pint].. The woodyard was next to Rose Brothers shop on Lincoln street just after the Bleachers Arms, but there was a woodyard n
  19. Ashley, the location of the scout HQ is now a grassed area about 50yds x 25yds, there may have been a 'bungalow' there at some time but I can't recall it, Martins bike shop was on David Lane a few yards down from Coombes cobblers shop which was on the corner of Lincoln st/David lane. Mr Martin smoked an evil smelling pipe......he ran a bike club called the Basford Wheelers for several years. Didn't know he made bike frames though, his shop was a very small converted terraced house.
  20. Ayup Alan, I can remember the 'Flewitts lads', they played darts with my dad. Who was the landlord when you used the pub ? The years you refer to it would probably be Mr/Mrs Limb, their son Douglas was a good singer, and I used to accompany him on the guitar in the back room at weekends, Rock 'n' Roll, Yay!. Before the Limb's, the landlord was Reg Sheppard, his son Ray was a 'peace-keeper' in the event of any sign of trouble, Ray could handle himself and could always rely on the 'regulars' to back him up, if needed. Pre 60's there was a blind guy [Johnny ?] played the piano in the bar, h
  21. Martyn: The pub was still there in the mid 60's, it was a popular meeting place for all the Basford lads [and gals] The 'club' you refer to was, I believe, the HQ of the 44th Nottm scouts at the top of Cowley street. [There's an old piccie of the building on 'Picture the past', page 37, in images of Basford, I don't know how to post links yet, so you'll have to look for yourself.] Lost contact with almost all the old lads [and lasses] when I left Basford in the mid 60's to live in Bulwell after I got married.
  22. The saying in owd Basford was...It's gerrin a bit black owwer Whitemoor.
  23. Yo, Martyn, I remember Kenny, and Malc, can't recall Alan though, Keith lived on Queen street, he's a little older than me, I used to hang around with his younger brother Adrian, I can remember Big Bev too. You must remember Freddy Dawson and Alan Leverton, they were usually in company with Kenny and 'Cotaz' along with a few others, bet you had a few M&B's in the Bleachers Arms [AKA 'The Bloodtub'] on Lincoln street ? !!
  24. Hi Mick, thanks for the welcome, Ow do to you Beefsteak, Tee Bee, great photo's there mate, sorry for duplicating them, didn't notice your website before, too much on here to go through, got there in the end though... !cheers! On the subject of the Canberra crash, I have vivid memories of this, although I was very young. I was at the catholic school on Kersal drive [two single storey wooden huts, [still there]] next to the church, we were having dinner in the hall when the burning jet came over, it narrowly missed the school, clipped the roof of a house on St Albans road, and crashed onto
  25. Ayup everybody... !hand! Bin 'lurkin' [ 'lookin' actually] for a few days, trying to read all the older posts, this could take forever ! Anyrode, I was born in Owd Basford, lived there 20 years, always known it as Bulwell Common, although a few people called it Bulwell Forest. I suppose the answer is in the Hucknall road entrance, next to the Wholesale car co. there's a metal archway there which clearly says 'Bulwell Forest', then there's the Bulwell 'Forest' Golf/Bowls clubs. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/content/im...est_400x300.jpg http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...v%3D
