  1. Two cousins of mine hailed from Radford, moved to the 'roughest' part of Aspley and spent their formative years in a Sandhurst Road prefab'. They are both the best read and intelligent members of my family, by some distance! Cheers Robt P.
  2. All the books I've read on Custer, and his 'Last Stand' agree that he had a misplaced ego... His tactics for the battle were completely wrong, and totally at variance with US Army practice... he was easily out-manoeuvered by the mastermind Crazy Horse, supported on the flanks by Gall and Crow King with their respective tribes. Common misconception that Sitting Bull was involved in the battle, he wasn't even in the technical area on the halfway line. My interest arose from a visit to the Battlefield in 1992. Tremendously eerie place, almost conveying a sense that something of major historica
  3. Much prefer: Some of Custer's 7th Cavalry unwinding besides the Little Big Horn River, whilst awaiting the arrival of Crazy Horse and his Lakota Sioux, June 25th 1876. Early Kodachrome, first published in the National Geographic of October 1876... "My great-great Uncle died at the Little Big Horn...he was camping in the next field and went over to complain about the noise...", Billy Connolly. Cheers Robt P.
  4. Sorry to read of that... Not that long ago that they were one of the region's major non-league outfits. IIRC, they have had league clubs as FA Cup scalps... Recall seeing some stirring matches at the old Manor Ground in the 60's/70's. Cheers Robt P.
  5. Too busy at the famous regatta, on the Isle of Wight... Cheers Robt P. http://www.iwight.com/just_visiting/yachting/cowesweek/ Cheers Robt P.
  6. That is a terrible inditement of those that oversaw the conversion, as relatively recently as the late 60's! Were the plasterers issued with face masks etc? Where were the embryo H&S folk? Trusting that they were all properly compensated... Cheers Robt P.
  7. You said it Michael...[it lasts for a week] Cheers Robt P.
  8. Too busy at the famous regatta, on the Isle of Wight... Cheers Robt P.
  9. Born in Bourne...grazed in Grassington...milked in Butterwick...calved in Calverton Cheers Robt P.
  10. The price of being virtuous! Enjoying these tales, do post some more... Cheers Robt P.
  11. Surely Vernon Road is flat throughout its length? I'd guess Cinderhill Road, heading out towards Bulwell... Cheers Robt P.
  12. Dunno about SE, but SW of the city was the sizeable Wymeswold airfield (just in Leics) where motorbike racing did take place, and there was a derelict control tower... located off that straight stretch of road between Wymeswold and Hoton... littlebro: Where in the county was RAF Wigsley? Cheers Robt P.
  13. Good lad... She mainly worked on Nuthall Road, but occasionally helped out at their Bells Lane branch. Upon her arrival, the word would go up Tilbury Rise, Dulverton Vale, Amesbury Circus and Eltham Drive like proverbial wildfire...* The young lads would soon gather at the shop, perhaps going in four times for items which would usually only merit one visit! * = dramatic licence... Cheers Robt P.
  14. Trust you were served by the delectable Olivia Pinkett...aka 'Sex on legs' !yowza! Your fags could well have been lifted by some bloke who was eventually deported to Caithness... Just called in my local newsagent, and was staggered to see that Parkies are now £6.63 for 20... Pleased that I no longer partake...£6.63 x 1.5 x 365 = £3,630 per annum Cheers Robt P.
  15. Chick previously lived in a council house on Broxtowe Hall Drive...always highly regarded, by all that knew him. Following my John Birch query, a mate informs me that the map ID could be his Indoor Cricket School, and not his home...makes sense. Also been told that both Clownty & Florist used to own several Bar Lane properties, hence the sporting residents. Cheers Robt P.
  16. Never knew that, always assumed it ran right through... As an irregular visitor to Bar Lane, and other adjacent places - a mile or so from my home territory of Bells Lane/Cinderhill - sometimes wonder if these seemingly numerous changes to various 'feeder' roads in the 30's, related to the newly operational ring road? Intrigued why your picture in Post #4 marks the residence of ex Notts cricketer, and former Bells Laneite, John Birch! Strange how so many Nottingham sporting pro's have opted to live on Bar Lane, over the years...I know of half a dozen. Cheers Robt P.
  17. Thanks for the pictures, certainly a vast improvement on those that appeared in the press at the unveiling. Wonder how long before the 'City Ground' plaque is defaced? Cheers Robt P.
  18. On this particular Sabbath, having seen your piccie, I am now rotating in my grave... One of the Stansby brothers (Paul?) went to High Pavement... AD: Pleased my Dutch one-liner was of use to you...after three exposures it was suspected that no one in this notoriously slow-witted group had understood it Cheers Robt P.
  19. The chemists of that era were a different breed, well before the arrival of the nanny state. There was none of this "...have you taken these pills before?"..."be aware that, etc..." More like, "Two bobs worth of cyanide please"..."Right,OK" The ethos being that if you bought something that killed you, 'twas your own fault... Cheers Robt P.
  20. IIRC, Hanley Street was first used in the early to mid 30's as the 1-7-22 services were introduced to serve the new council estates at Aspley, Bells Lane and, possibly, Whitemoor. The three routes were the sole users of Hanley Street until it closed upon the mass NCT route revamp, of the late 70's. Cheers Robt P.
  21. Had occasion to park up near Hanley Street quite recently, so walked across to evoke some memories and - of course - all I saw was the your Pic 2...not even a green bus! The wooden block on a chain was a regular feature...have witnessed several drivers try to set off with it still in place. Apparently the rule was made because of a wartime 'runaway' down the slope, which luckily inflicted minimal damage. Regular user of the 22 to Bells Lane Estate from Hanley Street, which travelled further along Nuthall Road, then turned left at Broxtowe Lane...past the 'bottom shops', then the length of Du
  22. Paul, how on earth can you shin up a lampost at your age? Cheers Robt P.
  23. Almost 500,000 new sex infections in UK last year http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-11072853 Note the location, and ethnic makeup, of the top 9... and that No 10 is London-by-the-Sea... Wonder if the Canary Wharf gutter press will comment? Top 10 STI hotspots in England: Hackney Lambeth Southwark Hammersmith and Fulham Islington Haringey Wandsworth Tower Hamlets Westminster Brighton and Hove Cheers Robt P.
  24. Nevertheless, as a follow up to my post #119...delighted for Craig Short, who's appointment ahead of the 'Managerial Roundabout' gang was to be commended. Trust they draw a big gun in the next round, both for the challenge and the dosh... Cheers Robt P.
  25. Yes, Ian...see what you mean...I think Throughout the thread I've been rather thrown (easily done) by the large river-side building, featured in the pictures... confusing it with the old Town Arms on the north bank or the site of the eventual Bridgford Hotel on the opposite side! In Paul's OP, I thought it was the latter... Cheers Robt P.
