  1. Would rather buy my own stuff and go home and make something / cook something I know is healthy and nutritious.
  2. Interesting lot of photographs to keep me occupied Pooh Bear. I've already spotted Christ Church, Cinderhill - top left hand corner - in the first photo; I wonder if the Co-op across the way had yet been established (1926?).
  3. She is Gorgeous Beefy; I certainly wasn't expecting a fluffy thing on seeing the new topic heading. Incidentally did you see the hares in last night's: 'The Great British Year' on BBC1? Thought about you as the photographers used a 'Thermal Camera', enabling them to take film of wild life throughout the night. Some wonderful scenes in this programme of female hares sparring - competing for males - and vast amounts of snowdrops growing - truly spectacular - to welcome in the Spring.
  4. Hi Kath, I think they have it wrong on the map and the 'Sch' opposite 'Basford Hall' should read 'Church Hall'; and yes of course Sunday School, Brownies and the GFS (Girls' Friendly Society) would meet here. I attended the Sunday School occasionally; can you recall the thin books we were given and the multicoloured stamps we could earn to stick in the book? Sandra Lyons and Jennifer Joynes I'm certain were members of the GFS; my sister Jennifer was a Brownie, together with her friend Margaret Langley. Wonder if they held Girl Guides here? I recall seeing Julie Cooke (sister of Sheila)
  5. Hi Kath, thank goodness the park and the bowling green - what's left of it - will remain. I remember the pigs on Stockhill Lane, just before you reached Rock House; I'm certain a set of allotments were here. We kids used to cut through from Stockhill to Bagnall Lane on our way to Vernon Road Park. Once doing this, someone in our group said: "hold on to your noses because of the smell!" (meaning pigs); a man's booming voice came from over the hawthorn hedge: "Yes you bleddy lot, that's what they all say!" Scared us to death, we ran like billio......................(don't think we ever
  6. Hi Katyjay, a good map that Cliff Ton has put on innit? - our childhood. Can you remember a girl in our class at William Crane, name of Shirley Piggott? She and her sister - a couple of years older - lived at 'The Miners' Welfare', set in the grounds of Basford Hall. Every school day, Shirley would bring in either a packet of 'Nibbetts' or 'Smith's Crisps' (little, blue pack of salt). How I used to envy her, wishing I could live in a Pub and do the same. Is the school opposite Basford Hall, the annexe (Sunday School) to Christ Church, Cinderhill do you know? PS: By the way (old say
  7. Watched both 'Bridget Jones' films on the TV recently; love the main character: Renee Zellweger is perfect for the role with her chubby face and a smile to brighten any dull day . And the adventures she has!: conquering all the hazards fate has in store for her. Love the character Mark Darcy too; Colin Firth, so suited to the role: a staid Englishman, his manhood simmering under the surface - don't you just love his pleading eyes? PS: So sorry that Helen Fielding in her latest book, decided not to pair these two off marriage wise; no doubt a future film will prove she was right.
  8. Carni, love your photo @ #122 - So pregnant with captions......................... PS: Nice smile, nice smile.........('And I mean that sincerely folks')
  9. 'Manners maketh the Man' - what about the woman?
  10. Hi Darkazana, I have two quince bushes; the only thing I've ever done with the fruit is take photographs as the fruit matured - I'd read about an artist who'd put together an exhibition on quinces! Made some mead a few years back; beautiful and deadly at the same time: a few sips and it just about floored me! PS: Would love the time to experiment with elderberries......................... Now there's a use for the demijohns in my garage...........
  11. Very RUDE of that person Denshaw @ #28.
  12. I saw 'The Exorcist' some years ago and considered it a brilliant film but the book was even better, more scarier and so well written; Writer: William Peter Blatty - I can well recommend for an engrossing read..........
  13. Hi there Darkazana, thank you so much for the information @ #4; it seems like you say 'tricky' but nevertheless very kind of you to get back............... PS: Had a serious go at making natural dyes out of hedgerow plants some years back: meadowsweet, mallow, sage, etc. and was delighted with the results. PPS: Have you ever made anything with quinces? (quince jam)
  14. Darkazana (love your name), do you know if the Sea Buckthorn Berries that grow in abundance along the sand hills of the East Coast can be used to make the oil? PS: Sea Buckthorn Oil, very expensive.
  15. Wonderful, humorous banter on here you lot. Remember when I was a terrible teenager - didn't we all go through this spell? - and we had a Scottish Miss Reid for our Cookery/ Domestic Science teacher. We used to take it out of her something rotten for her accent, especially when she said: "scon" instead of "scone". We really must have felt our working class origins at her pronunciation: 'scon' sounds posher than 'scone'. PS: Incidentally, I consider myself a mean scone maker; Tip: try adding a little sour milk to improve the taste..............
  16. Hi Paul, welcome to 'Nottstalgia'; your introduction to the site reads very interesting: I am the same age as you and know well the Aspley area that you speak of (Nuthall Road and Bar Lane) - remember 'Piggy's Yard' at the side of Breffitt's garage? PS: Keep posting, we're very friendly on this site.
  17. Sorry folks but apparently this 'hard rains a gonna fall'* 'til Friday; will have to save going down 'Goose Fair' 'til Saturday, unless...................here's hoping, fingers crossed......................... *Credit to Bob Dylan
  18. If there's one thing that puts the damper on things when it's 'Goose Fair' time, it's Rain!; and as I sit here typing it's coming down by the bucket load. Fingers crossed the weather forecast lives up to its prediction and the rain only lasts for today - don't fancy walking around 'Goose Fair' in 'Mud, Mud, Glorious Mud'.
  19. By the looks of those stuffed possums @ #21, playing guitars - I don't think I'd wish to eat any - enough to make you cringe!
  20. I think pear trees may be a little more temperamental than apple trees - take longer to become established; this is so with the ones in my garden - I should think the same applies in the wild.
  21. 'Bushel' is an old weight/ measure - remember it from when it was printed on the back of school jotters in the 50's.
  22. Hi Katyjay, aren't I just so lucky because I've a Conference Pear tree in my back garden; must admit the other day whilst gardening I saw this pear growing and so fancied it, I simply picked it there and then: such sweetness and juice - wished you could have been there to indulge.............. PS: I have two Conference Pear trees, one of them - bought from Woolworths - has yielded plenty; the other - bought from Wilko's - has yet to provide - must give it a little bit more love...................
  23. Hi Commo, I love Macaroni Cheese as well as Macaroni Pudding but if I was asked which dish complemented the Macaroni, it'd have to be Macaroni Pudding - yum, yum..........................
  24. To those of you who have difficulty spelling, I say just keep writing regardless and love what you're writing; the writing will only get better and you will want to make it even better by reaching for the dictionary - the beginnings of a love affair with words................. PS: Two people I admire: Carni and Babs; may their writing always be as interesting............................
  25. Hi Bilbraborn: 'ever tried macaroni milk pudding'? I'll say Bilbraborn; love it................ My mum used to make all the milk puddings available back when I was a kid: Rice, Tapioca, Semolina, Macaroni, Ground Rice......remember 'Cremola'? My favourite was Tapioca (Frogspawn we called it). PS: It's a shame that when I popped into Tesco yesterday to buy a bag of pudding rice, they only stocked this and semolina (dried goods). Long live the Art of Home Made Puds .......................and Bilbraborn, I'll definately be seeking out the dried macaroni..................
