  1. Or `Hel.....Hell.! In the Poetic Edda, Prose Edda, and Heimskringla, Hel is referred to as a daughter of Loki, and to "go to Hel" is to die. In Norse mythology, Hel is the ruler of Helheim, the realm of the dead. She is the youngest child of the evil god Loki and the giantess Angrboda. She is usually described as a horrible hag, half alive and half dead, with a gloomy and grim expression. Her face and body are those of a living woman, but her thighs and legs are those of a corpse, mottled and moldering. Sounds about right for modern day Hull.!
  2. At last a bit of sense on this page! Other types of `nuts' at last!
  3. 4/10 Willoughby on the Wolds, an area in South Nottinghamshire, which was ranked the fourth best place to live in the UK.
  4. The G.P's get NO referral fee. That would in Australia constitute an inducement or bribe, and would very soon end with the courts and being struck off. Ours is a very efficient competition driven system. It is why it is so efficient. I had my PSA taken this morning I can phone 8 hours later for my results Not wait several weeks as in the UK
  5. DATES again Bilboro. Dates. 2010 and 2011,-hardly news. As I have said before, the treatment and skill in the Australian system leave the NHS in Britain for dead (literally)
  6. NOT in Australia. We have a super efficient system here. It is the pathology labs that get paid not the GP. As no better information is yet to hand ,what is there to change my mind. The earlier the prostate cancer is picked up the more likely a cure. As I have said before ,but you have chosen to ignore,in Australia everyone is entitled to be tested once a year. Also,as previously stated ,2/3rds of the male population have taken advantage. This is why Australia has the finest health service in the world.
  7. A `rag' newspaper. The quoted individual,a `pencil-fairy' and ` number -cruncher'. NOT a doctor let alone a Urologist. The government will do all in its power to save money. Prostate cancer still the No.1 NEW cancer in UK (25% of all new presentations.) I will still have all my standard annual checks. That is my INFORMED choice.!
  8. Again see 2013 report above, not the outdated one you quote. Yes, everyone has the right and opportunity to have a once a year PSA test at government expense.
  9. Australia by WHO standards was voted No.1 for health care in the world (would you want to be treated in the British NHS or the American system?). So. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia around two-thirds of Australian men aged 40 to 74 have been given the Medicare-covered PSA test. He says testing will prevent 600 of the 3300 prostate cancer deaths expected this year. "We must do some test to save patients' lives," says Dr Peter Ruthven, president of the Urological Society of Australian and New Zealand, whose members are involved in treating patients with prostate ca
  10. O.k. you are entitled to disagree with probably the leading authority, and their facts, but who is the `rest of the world' As with the others ,it seems pointless discussing the topic further as you seem to wish to ignore `freedom of choice' and informed fact.
  11. Hardly a guess from such a learned society! Who cares? probably the ones who were sensible enough to have had the test early and survived!
  12. Have a look again at the figures,and evaluate,Bilboro`
  13. Not so by any means,Bilboro.
  14. Freedom of choice remains (until a better test evolves and until world authorities agree on a position) Give me the paper that these details are from please. If it is earlier than 2013,please again refer to my previous discussions
  15. Presumably you refer to #107? A number of people are not good with computers. Obviously the member is/are doing their best.( Again `freedom of choice!)
  16. From your earlier quote,Bilboro, Asymptomatic men can then make an informed decision about whether they wish to have a PSA test or not.My information is from 2013,not 2002. The jury is still out,but while ever a simple test increases my odds of longevity even slightly, guess which I recommend.
  17. Who knows,? But my 2013 recent figures show According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia around two-thirds of Australian men aged 40 to 74 have been given the Medicare-covered PSA test.., and many thousands are alive and presumably happy to be so!
  18. The American Cancer Society estimates that close to 239,000 men are expected to be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year, with an estimated 30,000 dying from the disease.
  19. Saving lives But Australian advocates of the test say the Task Force has misread the evidence and are concerned it's "sending the wrong message". They say if asymptomatic men as early as age 40 are tested this will help pick up prostate cancer at an early and treatable stage. According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia around two-thirds of Australian men aged 40 to 74 have been given the Medicare-covered PSA test. He says testing will prevent 600 of the 3300 prostate cancer deaths expected this year. "We must do some test to save patients' lives," says Dr Peter Ruthven
  20. The Government will ALWAYS go for the cheapest option. Speaking personally I always get a PSA together with a batch of other screening tests every year. Chest X-ray every 3 years unless symptoms warrant sooner. Eternity is a long time,I think it's a good thing to put it off as long as possible with the aid of a few simple tests. The British NHS is the absolute pits they do everything not to spend money wisely,so will try to fob off effective screening. The classic is the pap smear rules. Fortune has given us the vaccine which should make cervical cancer history.(thanks to another brill
  21. This is a very vexed issue. As one who had a friend die in great pain from this problem I can understand all the above arguments. One thing I remember from my earliest days in the dissecting room was the Prof . saying that if you lived long enough prostate cancer will get you ! Of the cadavers the incidence was about 1 in 5 at 85 years, increasing until it will surely get you at a 100! The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends against PSA-based screening for men who do not have symptoms that are highly suspicious for prostate cancer. The USPSTF states that PSA testing
  22. I seem to remember several concerts in 1960-2 in the dining room on the top floor of the `Tech'. The one I keep trying to convince myself of was Simon and Garfunkel (probably not as my remaining grey cells are almost gone!). In the same time period I also think I recall Cliff Richard in the coffee bar across the street.? I do remember the awful expensive food at the Tech though.
  23. Lunch? Who can afford lunch....?
