  1. More to follow later when I get out with the camera again. In the meantime, my attention was caught by something fluttering among the shrubs through the fence just outside our caravan window. On closer inspection (through the window) I was thrilled to see a thrush sitting on her nest just feet away, so I shall keep my eye on her and see if we have some babies there soon.
  2. Since those photos I have removed quite a few of the nettle roots to make way for planting, and we have put in the bin lid pond, but need to make it more unobtrusive. In the meantime here are some pictures of our compost area being constructed. With the first offerings!!!
  3. Well not interesting at the moment, but here are a few photos of our ongoing project. First up, the nettles that we had to clear!! Before... and after.. with the beginnings of the structuring.
  4. Half day at work today, but we had loo duty, so that helps as we have two blocks on site and I did a return trip taking some supplies up to the top block after I had finished my cleaning duty. Then it was a leisurely lunch as we did not have to go back to work, followed by shopping at Morrisons in Kings Lynn. Put everything away and cup of tea time with some serious tapestry work. Then I'm sorry to say it was get tea ready time and prepare the lemon and raspberry fresh cream sponge which I had made for our friends whose chucks we have been minding....used their chucks eggs in the sponge. Fol
  5. Well done Pianoman, a great start for you. We all have slow days Carni, and sometimes you need a break, I think it was Sunday when I had my low count, but I had a lovely day just chilling. An average day for me today, but considering it was my turn in the office not a bad count 6192. Half day off tomorrow so anything could happen there!!!
  6. I can't believe its the last week of the challenge...didn't that go quickly. Well done to everyone who has joined in. It is great to share the experience with others. Today I was outside and manage to remove a barrowful of nettle roots (suspect my shoulders will feel it tomorrow) and put in my bin lid pond. Total steps 8175.
  7. Well done Catfan. Pleased to hear you are managing to control your glucose levels. That's always the tricky one. I'm hoping that mine are still ok (though I did have some chips today...first time since I was diagnosed...but with a healthy dollop of salad and veggie lasagne, so the absorption should have been slowed down a bit I hope), I don't have the means to check my glucose levels after a meal, so I am trusting to instinct now as I have also stopped counting carbs, just trying to eat sensibly. December will tell.
  8. You may have missed their growing up Lizzie but if you look back through theses last few posts you will see that Carni has done a magnificent job in capturing their journey in pictures so you don't have to miss out completely Well done Carni, hope you manage to get their maiden flights!! I can guarantee I'll be working when it happens.
  9. 6500 is a good step count Lizzie and probably above average for many people. When first diagnosed with diabetes my doctor told me I should aim for 6000 steps a day to help control it. If I didn't work at it by using the treadmill or going for extra walks I would only average around 2-3000 steps a day most days. Though when the children were younger it was much more I expect as I used to walk to school and back twice every day, 3/4 mile each way, with the pony, as well as mucking out stables and taking the dogs for walks...often before I had my breakfast! Sadly as the children grew up and the
  10. A bit better today, though not my best, 5382. It was an office bound day and as we are a full site at the moment there is not much to be done outside. having said that tomorrow is indeed another day and as I will be on toilet duties again (whoopie do) I can also get out and about in the afternoon and I aim to have another go at the wildlife haven, clearing the nettle roots so that I can get the plants in that I brought from home. and hopefully start on a shallow bin lid pond and bog garden area below it. Well halfway through this post the doorbell went, a camper with electrical problems and a
  11. Lizzie, I had an email earlier this year from NTU to say that they would not be doing a blog as they had other projects about the falcons to concentrate on, but that they would continue to film the falcons and broadcast it. They were passing the blogging mantle to the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust who were going to host comments from watchers on their facebook page.
  12. Thought I'd look this thread up again, as I am presently knitting again, after a years break....last year was all about getting on with a tapestry which I had started over 20 years ago and then got left as children and horses took up my time. Then I saw a magazine The Art Of Knitting advertised, showing a lovely throw of all different patterned squares, so I decided to subscribe to it, as I have nearly finished the tapestry ( though plenty more unfinished needlework to be completed too) In the last month I have knitted myself a yoga top, very snuggly, and now am onto the throw. There are some
  13. Very quiet day for me today. Came back to Norfolk and fed the chucks, took some plants from my garden to the site and potted them until ready to put into our wildlife haven area (fox gloves, lupins, lemon balm and lavender for now), made Sunday Roast and then spent the afternoon having a rare battery recharge session, knitting squares for a throw. So the lowest of the low totals for me 3948.... I hang my head in shame
  14. Well now, according to my fitbit, which records miles and calories burned, and stairs climbed, today, having had a quiet day in the garden and doing some baking, I have walked 5993 steps or 2.54 miles, which roughly means that 1 mile = 2359 steps. (approximately) Hope that helps folks Incidentally I have burned 1560 calories (it takes into account breathing, resting etc not just activity) and today I have not gone up any stairs.
  15. As Michael says Pixie, once you have adjusted to your new baby in the family, and particularly when she is older you can plan family days out. When ours were young one of our favourite days out was to the grounds of one of the castles near Aberdeen, while we were living there. Entrance to the grounds was free and we used to take a picnic and a game of boules. We used to have a great time. In time, when your children are older you will be busy taking them to various activities, and going to watch them doing stuff at school. Over time your values change, and no you won't get out quite as much
  16. A half day for me at work as well today, but what a half day it turned out to be. First off having to post notices all over the site because the bus company has decided to stop the service which passed the site from Kings Lynn to Hunstanton (it was very popular) so had to inform our members of the route change. Then did some cone collecting as one pitch was covered in them and looked a mess. Took the cones (a wheel barrow full) to our Wildlife area for future use and decided to start clearing the nettle roots ready for planting some fox gloves and other self seeding wildflowers next week. Bu
  17. #156 Banjo48 have you registered on the fitbit site? If you do you can synchronise your fitbit with the site (you should have a bluetooth devise for this which came with your fitbit) Then even if your battery goes flat when it's charged again all your steps will be saved to the site....and it tells you when your fitbit needs charging.
  18. If you're really lucky Carni you can get steps in whilst travelling......if the pedometer is on in the car it counts bumps in the road It makes me laugh to see how far I have walked home!
  19. I know what you mean about the Sky reception, Lizzie. John has invested in a super duper dish in a box for use with the caravan and though it is better than the normal dish, on windy days the reception is rubbish and now the trees are in full leaf it's impossible. We have the dish on top of a garage and still it's not high enough to get a good angle to clear the trees. Fortunately the warden has a dish on a pole which is just sited to point between the trees so we have stretched our cable to that, but even then the picture pixilates on windy days.
  20. Woah.....see that girl go! Well done Carni, you leave us other humble peds standing!! Seriously it's great that you have achieved so much since the start of this challenge. You can only reap the benefits. I have had another fairly busy day, washing shower curtains, shovelling all the first collections of our compost into the new bin (photos coming up on the Wildlife Haven Thread this weekend when I can download them from my phone), cleaning the inbetween bits of some block paving and walking the treasure hunt route that I set up for visiting children to check that all the clues are in plac
  21. Thanks Carni. Must admit I love working outside and today there was the added bonus that most of the time a blackbird was singing its heart out...an absolute treat to listen to. Tomorrows job (unless it has been done today) is to transfer the start of the compost pile into the new bin which Rog, our warden, built for us today (which was after I suggested it I am proud to say)...it hopefully will burn some of the calories I put on tonight, having had a curry, even if it doesn't count for many steps
  22. More progress today, with natural debris cleared up and deposited in a pile, in the habitat area providing shelter or nesting material, or maybe just compost. Which brings me onto todays development that we now have a compost box, made by Rog our warden. I had suggested that we should build a compost heap when we were emptying the winter tubs and baskets ready for some new plants. I had noticed some old fencing at the back of the bin compound, and today Rog did just that. I am so pleased that the wardens are supporting my efforts, and of course they will benefit as they will not spend so much
  23. Not a bad day today...toilet block cleaning duties again, so that always adds steps on, then did some work on our natural habitat area, cleaning up some leaves, twigs, cones and general debris from the car park and making a mound of it so that it can either rot down, or be used as home by some creatures. Next it was finishing emptying out the winter flower tubs and baskets and redistributing the contents thoughtfully, and then onto the bin run with hubby....today he drove the tractor and I walked....for obvious reasons. Then weekly shop and todays total is 10385....that will do nicely thank
  24. Welcome back Pixie, sorry to hear you had such a rough time with your pregnancy but glad to hear you are over the worst and that you and Evelyn are both well. My daughter had a very similar experience with her first baby. Looking forward to hearing about Evelyn reaching all those precious first milestones.
