I went to Mapperley Plains Primary from about 1952 to 1958 I remember the outside toilets and the cricket stumps marked on the wall, the long walks to play football at Digby Avenue and the walks back (sometimes through the hedge at the back and over the fields) I remember most of the teachers already mentioned and would add Mrs Gretton ( her son Steven was in my class), Mr Taylor ( his son Newby was in my class as well) and when Mr Heal replaced Mr Smith as headmaster his daughter (Sally I think) was in my class I also remember the fancy dress parade which was shown in an earlie

I remember David Goodall - he played a number of instruments including the saxophone ( I think he actually played in a dance band) I remember him learning to play the double bass and he roped me into trying to accompany him on the piano, but I was so bad it didn’t help him at all

I remember Mr Adler - didn’t he have a glass eye? He tried to teach me German for two years but I couldn't get to grips with it

I remember Jim Briers - he taught me French for most of my time at ACHS, so it’s sad to hear he is no longer with us. He was quite shy in the early days so the girls in the class liked to try and embarrass him - he used to go very red. A very likeable man. Having said that in my final year I was taught French by Mr Dockerill (not sure if I’ve spelled that right). He was ok but prone to throwing the board duster at people that weren’t paying attention (he wasn’t too accurate as I found out to my cost on a couple of occasions) Does anybody remember the metalwork teacher Mr Tomlinson (I

Yes I thought it was you Paul i remember you got some of the lads from the estate in Bulwell to to join Oriel FC goodvtimes

5 a side at Carlton Forum was great as I remember - we sometimes got up to 15 turned up on occasions When you went to Peterborough I think John Taylor was manager and we played snooker in the Conservative Club at lunchtimes I remember most of those names of the people you worked with although I can’t picture them all I guess Roy Lander was eventually Nottingham depot manager

Yes, that was me I worked for Ken Kidger in Work Study along with Bill Perry and then in the fledgling computer dept and returned to work study in1972 You are right about the date of ACHS . In 1958 was at Bramcote Hills for a year Benjamin1945 before you went to Peterborough did you play for Oriel FC?

Yes I was in the Mapperley Methodist cub pack and I remember the outing to Barrow-on-Soar. I think that must also have been the year I started secondary school st ACHS I remember there was an old off licence opposite the church which was run by an old crabby woman and her husband and she was not very keen on having young kids in her shop buying sweets etc. I suppose the off licence was part of the Porchester pub which is not a pub any more although the building has survived

I worked at A B Gibson’s from 63 to 77 but I never realised he was bill brindleys brother — where did you work?

I remember the Commodore - went to various functions there, one of which was a ‘Gentleman’s evening’ where one of the acts was a lady ventriloquist- a very large lady with a most foul/mouthed dummy. A few weeks later she was on ‘New Faces’ and she was the most cleanest innocent person you could imagine but she wasn’t as funny as she was at the Commodore

I remember going to the Empire in the 50's. My Dad often took me on a Friday night to see the variety shows that they put on there. i remember seeing Old Mother Riley, Jimmy Young (when he was a singer), Terry Dene, Roy Hudd, Chick Murray and many more that I forget now. One artist that does stand out in my memory was a very young Bruce Forsyth - I remember thinking at the time that he was going to be clear big star

Yes it's doubly disappointing that both of the schools I attended - Mapperley Plains Primary and ACHS are both no longer there. It makes it very difficult to show your family where you went to school when the sites are completely different and the actual buildings gone

I've just driven past the site -they've knocked it down!!! I had no idea and it has made me rather emotional. There is an Arnold Hill Academy in the grounds but our school is just rubble - I'm totally gobsmacked. Did anybody know about this?

Yes I remember Mr Morris - taught history I think did Mr Newton teach Maths?

I remember Jim Briars as a very new teacher when the school opened and he was very easily embarrassed by the girls in the class I thought he was a good teacher

Unfortunately I have lost touch with all of them but I do know at least 2 are not with us Eric Howard died in a motorcycle accident soon after we left school and Nigel Bushnell I read had also died quite a number of years ago

I just thought of some of the teachers Jim Briars who taught me French Mr Fenwick English Mr Cawthorne Physics Mr Jones and Brian Thompson Biology Mr Hinds Cemistry Miss Carter History Mr Tomlinson Metalwork Mr Ring Art I think Mrs Ring was in there somewhere as well Mr Adler German Mr Dockerill French (around 1961/2)
