  1. The building at the junction of Wollaton and Talbot Streets was built in 1902 for a company that manufactured taxis and other horsedrawn carriages. Cheers, Bamber
  2. Puttin' my anorak back on From 1967 until 1972 routes 16, 16A and 32 had their terminus on Maid Marian Way. This moved to Long Row West in 1972. Anorak off. Cheers, Bamber
  3. Going into full train spotter mode. This photo has to be post 1967 judging by the style of the bus bodywork. NCT used to run Leyland's on the 16/16A routes and they didn't get the curved upper deck front screen until the 1967 batch. Since Maid Marion Way had already been built this bus would terminate not at Granby Street but on Long Row West outside Pearson's. Spotter mode off.
  4. Johnson Road: just off Derby Road (Brian Clough Way) before you get to the junction with Lenton Boulevard coming into town.
  5. The garage was Morkell and Carnhill (sp?). They were Nottingham's main Rover dealers. Cheers, Bamber
  6. Walking through Slab Square this lunchtime I got a chance to see how the remodelling of the area was coming along. Call me picky, but the bit of paving that is already open to pedestrians looks decidedly second rate. Rather like the dodgy brickwork you see on far too many new buildings. I've just got this horrible feeling that the new Old Market Square is going to open to fanfares followed by big questions about the standard of the workmanship.
  7. What a superb example of the art/skill of trompe l'oeil.
  8. Has anyone else noticed that youths are spitting in the streets nowadays. This seems to be a disgusting habit that has been brought in from abroad. That said, I do remember the signs on the old buses "NO SPITTING" - probably to discourage the spread of TB. Bamber
  9. "Dick" sends everyone at Nottsalgia his very best wishes, but regrets that he won't be able to make the next meet-up. Cheers, Bamber
  10. OK, I think I owe a question or two so to make-up here's one based on the latest Doctor Who episode shown last Saturday "The Idiot's Lantern" was set in 1953 during the coronation of the Queen. What was the significance of the choice of Florizel Street as the main location? Cheers, Bamber
  11. As a youngster those tele-goons scared me to death. Bamber
  12. Sounds like "Resnick" - based on the John Harvey novels of the same name about a Nottingham detective. Cheers, Bamber
  13. Yep he died fairly recently. I always enjoyed "Car 34, where are you?" in whic he he starred alongside Fred Gwynne and Joe E Ross (Rupert Rizick in Bilko) as hapless patrolmen of the NYPD.
  14. Nutz! I can still hum the theme tune from The Squirrels. Cheers, Bamber
  15. Which tv comedy starred a main character called Fletcher and also featured the actor Ken Jones but WASN'T "Porridge"? Cheers, Bamber
  16. That be Nogbad The Bad. Bamber (give me five minutes to come up wityh a question)
  17. Anyone recall the other spin-off from Wacky Races? No Googling this is a test of how much attention you paid to children's telly back in the 60s. Bamber
  18. Pete and Marcia's (or is it Marcia and Pete's?) new pub is the Three Crowns in Wymeswold. Excellent food, friendly atmosphere and a nice log fire which Marcia is still learning how to operate. There's a very strict car park policy; Bentleys, Ferraris and Mercedes only. Strictly no scrotes - so that's me barred already.
  19. Marcia has finally sold the Turf Tavern. Word is that this, single room traditional boozer is to be converted into a late nite (10pm-7am) shot bar May the Good Lord have mercy on our souls.
  20. Robert Harbin had an origami show on ATV at teatime in the 1960s. IIRC it lasted 15 minutes and each week he would show you how to fold a particular figure. Even to this day I can remember the "ice cream cornet" fold/shape as being fundamental to the art of origami. Harbin was an extremely distinguished member of the Magic Circle. His most famous illusion is the Zig Zag Lady where a body appears to be divided into three inside a vertical cabinet. Cheers, Bamber
  21. The Brit was a right old dive at the very end. Greenie, he'd had had the Newmarket before, still insisted on pricing his beer in shillings and what sight he was behind the bar in his string vest, shorts, black socks and sandals.
  22. That brings back some memories. I had some dealings with Gary Davis (part owner of the DC franchise) in pre internet days. I never ceased to be amazed by the Yanks insularity. They would bring consultants over from the States who had no idea about the nature of the UK market. For example they were dead keen on a 24 hour weather channel. You just couldn't get it into their heads that since we never have the kind of life threatening weather, that is part and parcel of the US climate, such a service didn't make sense. That said, when DC sold out to NTL the guys that came along weren't much be
  23. Well there's a block of flats on the sky line. And in the second photo there's definitely a council house in the background. My best bet is that this is somewhere down The Meadows probably towards the Victoria Embankment. Other than that ...
