  1. Other way round, I'd suggest... Surely the pub is on the right heading into the city, about 300 yards from the Nuthall Rd/Western Bvd roundabout. The route to the city is via Bobbers Mill Bridge and Alfreton Road. Cheers Robt P.
  2. Yep i would say so too.The Wheatsheaf Bobbers Mill...By the way bit of useless info here, that's where i held my Wedding reception back in 1970 also it was the first and last time my dad got drunk.....
  3. There afew Bulwell pics on that Trolley bus site, you might find a picture of the cafe Search 'Trolley Bus' here
  4. I remember as a lad visiting my grandma's on Beeston road and watching the tanks going up and down university boulevard in the 50s, never knew at the time that they were coming and going from the chilwell dept. Now that i live only a stones throw away it all makes sense now. As you say it's not what it use to be, there's still a little left, but most of it has houses or small business's on now..I'm not sure of this but did Central television open a new studio on their..? Something i do remember well is the road bridge that spanned the site just about where the Corn Mill stands now. The speed
  5. Since the days that I cycled to school up Wilkinson Street in the mid 50's, I've always had the same query over the exceptional road width! According to my ancient map it was in place, and marked with heavy black lines - indicating some width - by 1921.....but devoid of any housing, except for a few properties which stood well back into the Bobbers Mill area. Could be that it was deemed to be a major feeder road from the City into the developing Ring Road, hence the width? I'll put the matter on to my Local Studies, Angel Row list - might have an answer by August time..... Cheers Robt P.
  6. If you are referring to what i said Tuts the Scala was on Market st which i believe changed it's name to the News House never The Odean and The Moulin rough was on Milton st across the road from the Victoria centre monstrosty...............you know i pass by there where the Moulin rough was and for the life of me i cannot remember what it is now, one thing i do know is that the Halifax building society building has now been converted into a posh Cafe come Bar establishment.....
  7. Are you meaning the cafe that was at the Friar Lane/Maid Marian Way junction? Cheers Robt P. No further up on the right close to the Coop House island. The one you were talking about was Called 'Maid Marion', I think?

  9. Great pic...thanks for posting! Still have this nagging feeling that the featured pub was indeed 'The Yorker'! Also shown is a very rare shot of the Midland General A1 trackless, inbound from Ripley, not far short of it's Slab Square (Debenham's) - more latterly King Street/Queen Street - turnaround. It ran right through to Ripley Market via Cinderhill, Nuthall, Eastwood, Langley Mill, Heanor & Codnor. I've posted some more info' about this service, and the 'Ripley Rattlers' website link in the "Web Sites about Old Nottingham" - "Nottingham Buses" thread. Cheers Robt P. Shame on

  11. Yes, I went to the Basford Wakes on a few occasions. I'd quite forgotten that the largish pub car park was used. Weren't some of their rides also placed around the railway station, across the road? Reckon the venues that the fair folk dispersed to, following Goose Fair, is a whole subject in itself! It was understood that the majority of the rides and shows went on to Hull, said to be the largest fair in the country, "How can it possibly be bigger than our Goose Fair?", we thought! In the late 60's I recall going to the post-Nottingham Ilkeston Fair, which occupied the whole of the Market
  12. I dont think its changed that much since the 1986 picture on page one. To take the same picture today you would need to be in the cafe at British Home Stores. Gawd has Woollies been gone that long?
  13. That cafe was known as Leatherlands back in the mid sixties.. we would spend many an hour in there slurping large quantities of tea after long stints on the beach, shouting "DONKEY RIDES A TANNER" and pushing the little irks in their swingboats! back then, Anderby Creek was a very busy place, the beach at times would be crowded .. strange, nowadays it's a mere ghost town.
  14. The houses you mention are known affectionately as dutch bonnet houses. If I remember on that side of the road there was a council plasterer named John, do you have any recolection of anyone on Melbourne who owned a parrot, and no he was not any relation to Long John Silver. I think her last name was Taylor. The parrot had the most suggestive laugh you have ever heard, it used to fasinate me as a youngster. I used to live on Bobbers Mill Road when I first met my other half, in the dolls houses. The other halfs first wife lived on Peters Street on Hyson Green. There was also Sheila Lees,
  15. Have you tried Lidls cloudy lemonade, that is even burrrpier. Mix it with the radishes and heaven knows where you will end up!!! I like Lidls salami, the one with three varietys. Black pepper, cheese and herb crust. Wonderful stuff. The Lidls at Langley Mill are having a 50% off sale on some of their items so you can have twice as much burrp for the same price. A crazy crazy
  16. Hello Brian Welcome back. Can you remember ? WEas there a Cafe on Broad Marsh Bus station?
  17. Langley Mill is not covered by NTL, having heard bad reports about AOL and BT, a friend decided to sign up with Tiscali. The cost was £15.99 per month. The contract was for a year, much like most contracts. The 'offer' included free modem and set up. On signing up for this they received the modem, a splitter for the phone line and two in line filters. These were delivered yesterday through the post. Friend rang Tiscali to ascertain when they would arrive to set up the said modem, etc. We don't do that, you do! on asking about the free set up mentioned they were told we have done that f
  18. Born Brixton Road front bedroom attended Sidney Pearson Hill on Foster Street started my adult life living above The Gregory Hotel pub ( after a few weeks with mates in Vic flats ) then moving to an old terraced house on Foster Street ( bit like an inside toilet with an outside house ) just down from Denbo's cafe ( well handy ) then my daughter come along went posh moved to the 1st new house on the new Cobden Street housing development took a council ex-change to Bilborough ( big mistake ) , copped for a half decent job and a son joined the property ladder now in Wollaton ( short walk to Sunny
  19. Welcome to the site, enjoy...!! I used to live on Bobbers Mill Road in the late 60's, 1967 to be precise. If you were born in 1970 then you are the same age as my daughter. I also lived at Beechdale, on Felstead Road. Then we moved to Ilkeston in 1973 and stayed here ever since. Happy posting. A
  20. These posts brought back some memories. The railway station on Arkwright street was at high level. We used to go up there at Dinner time after we had been to the 'penny cake' shop on Holgate Road. This shop sold off the day before's cakes for a penny. In the winter we used to lean against the hot wall where the ovens were. The wall used to bulge due to heat distorsion. I bet it still does, whatever the buiding is? Anyway the station had helter skelter type parcel chute, wich was totally enclosed. We used to hurtle down it in the dark. My mate used to throw bricks down after me :o We wo
