Sowing onion seeds

Recommended Posts

In the northern half of the country onion seeds are sown on Boxing Day in pots or trays to give them a sufficient length of season to mature. If you live in the Midlands or further south you might want to think about sowing them before the end of February for optimum results.

I've got one (seriously, and not knowing a lot , if owt, about gardening)) that started sprouting in the vegetable rack. I decided to leave it to one side and plant it in the spring to see if anything would happen. Any ideas if it will ? The leaves are about 8/10 inches long now by the way.

Let me get this one straight in my mind.......................you're going to plant an onion, to grow an onion?

Over Yule I ate new potatoes that were planted last september in a large wooden box filled with compost in my celler.

I dont know if you know that trick Compo, but if you dont and have the space, have a go they taste good .....................

If you plant your sprouted onion it will grow and flower in a short space of time. It will not form a bulb because they use their existing bulb to feed the flowering head. When we dig them they are still juveniles and the flowers come in the following season. Even heat treated onion sets can bolt to flower very quickly in certain conditions.

Onion sets are young onions that have had their growth stunted by heat treatment the idea is that they can grow to full bulb size in a shorter time than from seed. But seed is more reliable in that seeds do not bolt so readily as sets.
