Freedom of Speech on the internet

Recommended Posts

There has been a misconception since the start of the internet that it is now acceptable to write what you like on the net.

As far as Nottstalgia is concerned, there are certain conditions that members agree to when they join, these conditions are not unreasonable.

Though Nottstalgia was started to discuss the history of Notts and archive information from peoples memories.

It also gives members a platform to air their opinions. There will be disagreements on these opinions but members must respect others opinions even if they do not agree with them. Offensive comments or verbal attacks on other members or staff will not be tolerated.

If you cannot abide by our conditions of use, expect your posts to be edited, deleted or moderated. The latter meaning that all your posts are vetted before they become visible to other members. In very extreme circumstances, expect to be banned from this site.

Consider this to be my pub, in which you are very welcome, unless you become troublesome to other, then you will be chucked out.

I've come across many people on forums who believe they have the right to say what they want without repercussion in posts, they believe they have the God given rights to vent their feelings at other members...

As I've pointed out when they had posts removed by the owner of the site, you're in "their house" now so have to abide by "his rules" as he has a legal responsibility to make sure there are no defamitory remarks posted about anyone on his site.

On all forums sites, the owner has a responsibility to follow the hosts, paid or free, terms of conditions, which limit so called free speech.

If anyone doubts my words, go and register a web site of your own, you don't have to start it, just read the TOS the hosting company list, those rules are to prevent a lawsuit.

My son Stephen came around yesterday evening, he works for Alice a French internet provider, and he was saying, over here they have found banning people from forums is almost useless, because they just change there email address and a few weeks or months later reregister under a different name, what they are starting to do is use a sin bin system, where the offender can go onto the forum but cannot post on it until his post has been cleared, they can be in the sin bin from anything from a day to a few months.

Very true Melton, there's a down side to banning people via IP addresses too, some ISP's issue block numbers, AOL is one of them, so banning one member could well end up with banning another member.

BUT, in saying that, a site owner does have some legal protection from law suits if they have shown they have done their best in trying to keep a troublesome member off their site.

There is a website dedicated to the history of Arnold and where people are encouraged to add comments and your own stories and memories associated with Arnold and surrounding areas. They have some interesting topics regarding prominent Arnold Residents and buildings including Arnolds Cinemas and Public Houses.

My question is this. What are the rules regarding the sharing of informaion and Photographs between members of Nottstalgia and members of The Arnold History Group. I fully understand if this is not allowed its just that they have some interesting photographs of Arnold which might appeal to a number of Nottstalgia members

As long as you have the permission of the photo owner and acknowledge to whom it belongs, there is no problem as far as I see it.

I've posted dozens of mining photos and articles/papers on my mining forum, I always post a link to where I have copied them from and photos I usually have permission and acknowledge the owner of the photos.
