Bubblewrap 3,815
I was only asking because I don't know what happened to The Wilberforce & I'm not certain where the car park is..........................Sorry.
Guest
No that electrical plant was further up on same side.it was on a corner , then in late 60's Skills occupied part of a car park then it was loading/ storage for GNCS
Guest
All on that side opposite Co-op
Guest
PHEW!! Lets switch subjects- what about Wally Ingels????
Cliff Ton 10,580
I'm confused now. Wasn't the NCP car park where the 'Electric Power Station' was, on the corner? The car park where the "power station" was, has probably transmuted into this one. https://goo.gl/maps/Olvt7 But there was also an underground / enclosed car park (I think, no trace remains) where the "bakery" was. TBI 2,351
On that very same corner, but I'm thinking early 70's. Five or six storeys, very ugly pre-cast concrete job.
Guest
Thats right TBI everything in that powerstation was bottle green . But always seemed deserted, was'nt there a similar one behind "hunto"bus station? As i said i remember skills booking office on the next corner
Bubblewrap 3,815
That power station was mentioned on another thread some time last year. It was actually on St Ann's Well Road

Guest
True- just watched Poldark on one- was it that grandiose first time around??
Robbie 39
I think both Skills and the Electricity Station were opposite each other on Hanley Street.
TBI 2,351
Yes, they were Robbie. Skills originally had a small bus station in the sixties, as well as it's booking office. Opposite was the Electricity Station, I thought was demolished in the early seventies but have since realised it was much later, to make way for the current car park. Bubblewrap 3,815
Needle Place. Is not listed in Blackner's "History of Nottingham" published in 1815. But is listed in Whites directory of 1832. Wollaton Street was then known as Back Lane.
Cliff Ton 10,580
Might be this. Deering map from the 1750s, including Back Lane (and Back Side, Parliament Street). And if you go back to DAVIDW's post #7 about Mr Lavender, you can see some of the features mentioned.
TBI 2,351
Interesting to see how the city centre has grown since the 1750's. With the fields starting just from the north side of what is now Talbot St.
Bubblewrap 3,815
#40 The map appeared in Deering's history but it was drawn by Badder & Peat.
Guest
I agree TBI, the Tap N tumbler was once a field!! (i'll remember that when i'm having me next macko)
TBI 2,351
And remember well before it was a field, it was a forest!
Guest
I'll ponder that one when i hit the top shelf
Cliff Ton 10,580
#40 The map appeared in Deering's history but it was drawn by Badder & Peat. I made that mistake before in another thread. I must learn to get them the right way round.
Bubblewrap 3,815
Needle Place was probably a closed court yard of back to backs when first built (Nottingham had over 300 at one time) but I suspect the houses were knocked down to make room for Whitehalls factory. Maps of 1850(ish) & 1900 would be interesting.
Guest
Whitehalls made what Bubblewrap?
