OrphanAnnie 296
When did the hospital close please can anyone tell me? I had my daughter there in 1974 but can find no reference of it being a maternity hospital? At the time there was also The Firs and Peel Street, not sure if the City Hospital was used as a maternity unit as well. I have been away from the site for a couple of years - so glad to have managed to get back on!
Beekay 5,180
I can confirm City hospital had a maternity unit. My good lady had sons in there in 1967 and 1969.
Jill Sparrow 10,310
Welcome back, Orphan Annie. The city hospital maternity unit was certainly in use in 1975 as my nephew was born there in February of that year. His sister was born at Peel Street in September 1978. I think it closed shortly afterwards. His youngest sister was born in The Dukeries building at Kings Mill in November 1980. All three places are now gone, although I believe parts of Peel Street still stand but are used as a pub?
philmayfield 6,187
The City Hospital has a purpose built maternity unit, not a just a wooden shed in the yard! Both of ours were born there.
