ube 38
How many birds fly around?... Must be 1000's reet... Just look at the starlings murmurate for instance Now me question is "where are all the dead birds?".... You will see the odd road or cat kill but you'd expect to see more.... Do they all bugger off to die at the birdy graveyard???
Beekay 5,261
They're probably all snapped up by foxes and such, or owt else that eats carrion.
PeverilPeril 3,300
A good question ube. Made me think. Maybe we humans only see less that 1% of land mass but dead birds take up 100%. Also they get eaten. Even my hens eat them!
Beekay 5,261
There ya go. Just what I said. "Owt that eats carrion". Thanks PP.

Compo 10,328
Nothing is wasted in nature. Dead animals are soon despatched by carrion eaters. the only renmants we see in our patch are feathers and the odd stripped ribcage.
Beekay 5,261
And that's from nosy tourists, eh Compo. Them and their bloody cameras and anoraks.
Oztalgian 3,392
Can anyone tell me why birds that are flying over field usually fly at a height that is above all the cars and trucks yet when they cross a road for some reason they swoop lower and risk getting hit? But still you'd expect to see more.... And saying that there's been a dead duck on the towpath for days now, I suppose the "carrion eaters" aren't that eager to despatch ducks

Only guessing mind Oz, but it could be that the birds see the grey tarmac below and possibly associate it as running water. Therefore swoop down for a drink or passing snack, then realise their mistake at the last minute. This is only an assumption, having no basis in fact. Take care Cobber. Oztalgian 3,392
Could be Beekay, I hit a Galah, a pink and grey cockatoo, the other day with one of my wing mirrors, the glass popped out so I had to replace that and luckily no further damage. They are quite a large bird around 14" long and weighing in at 12ounces. It made quite a bang as it hit the mirror casing
