A subject near to your hearts.

I thought I would create a topic just for them

Maybe the site could get some sponsorship, for the amount of mentions it gets.

I could put a GK ad on the forum pages?

I thought that suggestion was rather insensitive considering how we all know how strongly Pete feels about green king, and to make him the head caretaker too! well it beggars belief.

It would be like asking me to be a Sheffield Steeler supporter for a year or two…..I vomit at the thought.

Please correct the spelling Mick!!!

Insensitivity doesn't come into it, I love a bit of GK baiting, me, it keeps the Pykie Brewers in the limelight.

I was watching BBC breakfast news this morning and they were interviewing the chairman of Wetherspoons, you know, that lot who were selling GK IPA for 99p. It appears they are going to open up at 7:30 in order to sell breakfasts, egg bacon and a pint of Abbot, what is the world coming to!!

I must admit, the bloke was fantastic, sitting there in his tatty denim shirt looking and sounding as if he'd just come from his Devon milking parlour, cheerfully taking the mickey out of the BBC specialist business expert, loved it, great character, Richard Branson watch out.

I saw that while eating a bowl of salted porridge it was brill…

So you haven’t gone then Pete?

Weatherspoons are opening forty more chains in places where a Big Mac breakfasts can’t be found. As regards to a full English washed down with a GK special they also sell Coffee & Tea if one so desires….

Sounds like an interesting interview with the Wetherspoons boss!

A pint of anything alcoholic, let alone one that's brewed by Greene King, is about the last thing I could stomach at that hour! I do think it's a good idea the way that some pubs are opening their doors for breakfasters and people wanting a tea or coffee however. A pub in nearby Arnold has been doing this successfully for many years as far as I'm aware. It uses its situation in the centre of the busy shopping centre of Front Street well in this regard.

I'm not the biggest fan of Wetherspoons hostelries but one can't help but admire their success based on a very different business model. They certainly have their imperfections but do at the same time allow some folk to get out for a few sociable pints that they would be otherwise unable to afford. Of the local ones the only one I (seldom) use is The Roebuck on St. James Street in the city. It's not a patch on the beautiful Old Malt Cross straight opposite but it's a cheap, normally civilised pint, smack in the centre of the city. If I was to choose any pub in my locality Redhill/Arnold for a quiet pint it would probably be Wetherspoons The Ernehale in the town centre. It's a bit like most of the chain's pubs I find - not great but okay. The bonus is of course that you always walk home with a lot more money in your pocket!

The Lockstone in Long Eaton is very similar to a Weatherspoons inasmuch offering cheap beer and food even the lay out inside is reminiscent of the aforementioned.

I often call in there for a bite to eat while shopping in Long Eaton on a Saturday now that the Littentree has closed its doors.

There may not be anything wrong with their beer, it's their philosophy, deviousness and disregard for any moral issues at the expense of profits for their directors.

But you know all that, it's happened before with Whitbread and Greenall Whitley, and what happened to them, having expanded, shut down breweries, put people out of work, taken over pub chains, put their mark over the country, they pull out and take their immoral gains off to the Bahamas with them. The trouble is, Bury St Edmunds has a great history of brewing, GK is their main employer, the brewery forms more of a landmark on the town than the ruined abbey, they merge into one. It's just being run as a hatchet job, profits for already rich men without a care for their employees and the brewing industry as a whole, I shall be interested to see what happens over the next few years, meanwhile, no way will I drink their products, I just think of the employees of Ridleys, Hansons, Morlands, Ruddles, who had no say in the matter, but whom these filth like to persuade us still exist as seperate entities, happily working in their own breweries rather than being consigned to the Jobcentre because of Greene King, it's about time you supported these unfortunate people and stuffed GK, bollocks to them.

No way have you got shares with them either Bip, you bloody stirrer.

I take it your not a big fan then Pete?

Don't pretend to me you've only just noticed, I thought it was the whole point of the thread, a good excuse for a go at the brewing industry, remember those happy days when you could go into Nottingham and have a pint of local beer, Shippoes, Home Ales, Kimberley, for better or worse, it was better than being dictated to by outsider stock market players who couldn't care less about anything but their profits, thats what it's all about these days.

Wait till the GK directors get fed up with playing the game and you all have to drink draught Budweiser, and I don't mean the genuine Czech product.

The sad thing is, very few of you take this seriously, you seem quite prepared to drink what is put in front of you despite the moral issues involved, thats how these people get away with it, they play on peoples weaknesses.

Here's a good one, we went to a meeting of the allotment commitee at Bocking Club last night, BC used to be the Workingmens Club for the employees of the Courtaulds Mills that formerly occupied the village, a lovely place with a fantastic bar, until............ yes, you've guessed it, I saw who ran the show. Fortunately, in the midst of the GK beer pumps, our only local brewery, Shalford Brewery, a village a mile up the road, had their bitter on tap, I bet GK wouldn't be happy about that if they knew. They you go, a pint of Shalfords finest, beautiful stuff, served in their own personal glass, a pint of diet coke for Lizzie, £3:00. What horrified me was sitting in the meeting and noticing that all the blokes were drinking pints of GK IPA, but thats how they get away with it, you walk up to the bar, ask for a pint of bitter and get that stuff, no doubt part of the contract.
