An ex-Colwick driver, "Split-Pin" lived there and had his 'mantel' clock broken by a 'friendly' colleague topping up his coal bunker!(Split-Pin/ Cyril Caborn? later killed in crash at Lenton South Junc.) the 3 houses were mentioned in an earlier post on this topic but despite walking past them 4 times a day to & from Sneinton Blvd. school I didn't know of other houses behind Richardsons at the front. The 2nd. house on the left thro' the 3rd. bridge is where my mate Jack Thompson lived after being bombed out of Whitley Bay in 1940, I posted about him a couple of weeks ago in the 'Floods' topic driving a crane down the Embankment steps onto a barge (and into the river!) but has anyone noticed the junction (other than the railway sort!) at the end of Meadow lane? Sneinton Hermitage to the left then St. Stephens Rd. Sneinton Hollows, Thurgarton St. Sneinton Blvd. & Colwick Rd. Whilst socialising in the 'Wrestlers' Pub on the 'Hollows' a long distance lorry driver said "that junction was unique in having 7 roads directly on to a central point". As M. Sadly I never got to know him as he was killed in that accident a few years before I started work on the railway. Did you know Peter Bakewell or George Twigger. Both were drivers. albert smith 803 Posted March 7, 2014 Report Share Posted March 7, 2014 Sorry Bb, no I didn't know 'Splitpin', in fact I had to ask ex-driver Derek Bacon re. him & the Lenton crash. I did know George Stone the other driver involved and found it hard to believe he was at fault? Peter & George Twigger are remembered but as firemen further up the ladder than me, I doubt there are many of the drivers I fired for still around, yes, and I'm pleased to say DRIVE for as I was fortunate to be booked with quite a few who would work 'days about' alternating with each others work, whether it was shunting in Nottm./Beeston sidings or a coal train to Wellingboro' & once, just the once I did get to drive a Black 5 hauled express to London but that was after 15 years apprenticeship! 1 Quote Link to post Share on other sites

Cliff Ton 10,480 Posted June 2, 2015 Report Share Posted June 2, 2015 It hadn't been possible to drive over the level crossing at Meadow Lane for many years, but now pedestrians can't walk it either. If you approach the old crossing you will find this. And you now have to cross the rail by this. But looking towards the Sneinton side, there is still some of the old GN bridge and wall surviving.
