How to check a company's credentials.

I am thinking of making an investment in a renewables company but not without first checking their credentials. Does anyone know how to check a company for registration and past history etc?

Compo. Published accounts can hide an awful lot. Is this a publicly quoted company or a private one?

After what I heard recently ( a company director who in about 3 years has ceased trading with about 7 companies owing over £140,000 but still having a turnover of £5,000,000, +) saying to a parliament enquiry nothing to do with him despite being a director of some, I'll keep my money under the mattress!

Another way to search is to just type the company name in google,followed by the word bizzy,and the details come up.
