  1. Thanks bk, was that the same bridge as in the google link cliffton put on? or was there another one?. And what a gent you were paying your wife to be's bus fare.
  2. Thank's ct i think it is, i did try player st on google maps but didn't go that far along as i had in my mind it was more at the alfreton road end of the street it was on, it was over 50 years ago though so thats my excuse.
  3. @Cliff Tonthanks for the pointer i had not got to that one yet, so many old thread's that i am interested in reading & if i live to be 80 i may have got through them all by then.
  4. @letsavagoothanks for your reply, you were much further down alfreton rd than me then, although i did used to go down that end quite a bit as my grandparents lived on wallan st for a few years in the late 60's & early 70's. One of my most vivid memories of the area is the smells from the player's factories down there, also can anyone who lived in that area confirm that one of the streets near wallan st had a factory with a high walkway from one side of the street to the other? I have been on google maps but am guessing it's long gone now.
  5. @David sheridani would imagine most members on NS have that same memory of the meter man counting the money, i also remember that the electric always used to run out at the most inconvinient times ie when me mam was watching coronation st or crossroads & her often sending me round to neighbours to see if they had 2 shillings to exchange for a 2 shilling coin.
  6. @benjamin1945i have been reading the farrands/ mardens thread & if i remember correctly it was in the row of shops between newdigate st & thoroton st, possibly either what is now the car audio centre or nottm hi-fi looking on google maps, wonder if you may be able to confirm this? thanks.
  7. @letsavagoowhere in radford were you born? i was also born in radford & lived in the area till the mid 70's, we did have fireplaces in the bedrooms on gamble st but they were boarded up hence the ice on the inside of the windows in winter.
  8. @letsavagoo& @troggi never even thought about people still using coal in stoves or log burners, our house on gamble st just had 2 fireplaces in the front & back living rooms, the rest of the house was unheated, & ice on the inside of the bedrom windows was a regular thing in the winter.
  9. Sorry ct also me just assuming that you meant they were still in the business too.
  10. Thanks bk thats a long way to bring coal, & thanks phil m look forward to any more info you supply, has brought back another memory from my childhood in radford.
  11. @philmayfieldyes i was very surprised when cliffton said earlier that they were still around as i didn't think there would be any demand for coal nowdays either, i cant think of anyone i know who uses it. And wonder where it comes from since all the pits closed? .
  12. Thank you i was only asking as i am pretty sure that at the time i am talking about they did live in the house at the coal yard on ireton st, so may have moved there after that house was demolished. It always seemed a very big grand house to those of us who lived in a 2 up 2 down.
  13. @philmayfieldthanks for the reply phil m & am pleased that you confirmed the sons name shows my old grey matter is still working , what era would that have been when he lived in fiskerton? & he did always deliver our coal on a lorry maroon colour i think no pony though.
  14. I have only just noticed looking at the photo again the date of 1976, this must probably be 1 of the last photo's taken of those premises as that is the year we moved from gamble st & mass demolition began in that area. Walking around there now on google maps there are very few houses left from that era, the only thing thats instantly recognisable is all saints church.
  15. Thanks for the reply ct, at the time i only knew of the radford premises so it's interesting to learn that maybe the same family operated in other area's & am very surprised to hear they are still going too.
  16. @Cliff Tonhave just been reading the coal man thread & noticed that you mention getting your coal in clifton from nevins, they also used to deliver our coal on gamble st, it was cyril nevin & his son who's name i'm sure was richard, their house & yard were on ireton st just off raleigh st then, there is a pictue of the premises on picture nottingham NTGMO13850 possibly the same family?.
  17. @Beekaythanks bk & @MRS Bthanks for your vote of confidence in me, my other half hey arnold says i'm a luddite where technology is concerned.
  18. Thankyou kind sir very good of you & i will have a look at your tutorial when i get home & see if i can do it.
  19. It appears that wicksteed are still manufacturing playground equipment today, we took our grandkids to our local play park in hilton derbyshire earlier this week where they have just installed a lot of new stuff all bearing the wicksteed name, i did take a photo but have no idea how to post it. And i also remember the large slide on radford rec at the corner of ilkeston rd & lenton boulevard had that name on each step.
  20. @Jill Sparrowi could just imagine the scene, you & pickleface conversing over coffee & cake.
  21. I remember when we used to go on the annual outing to blackpool in the late 70' & early 80's with the arnold working mens club where hey arnolds parent's were regulars, his dad was on the commitee, skillies coach parked outside 8am sunday morning being loaded up with crate's of home ales IPA & apollo pop & a box of crisps for the kids, great times.
  22. @Jill Sparrowbet you dont have coffee morning's with any of your old manning teacher's jill .
  23. Yes alpha corner of cowley st & percy st.
  24. Yes hey arnold had a cortina like that in 1984 metallic green with a black vinyl roof & he loved it.
  25. @Cliff Ton thats a great pic ct also showing the flats that where there at that time, when i worked there from 86-92 the flats had already gone from there & new housing being built in their place, i didn't know it had been converted into flats, the last time i passed the nellie it looked empty & in a very sorry state so at least its being re-used for something now, it was always a busy & well used pub when i worked there. I think it had been closed as a pub for quite some time, like most other pubs in the area.
