  1. Flared jeans with extra panels sewn in to make them even more flared - not good for running in.....
  2. But does anybody have an answer to the question? I wonder if it just acquired that name by the locals calling it a common as in an area being frequently used.
  3. Does this post need archiving?
  4. I remember the bar and the person you're referring to - sort of beehive hairstyle? I'm pretty certain there was an article in the Post or Bygones recently.
  5. For those interested in watery radio, you might be interested in the return of Swinging Radio England, not sure how long it's for - it's to mark the anniversary of the Marine Offences Act and the shutdown of the pirates in '67. The link is here - http://www.nowthatsradio.co.uk/
  6. Not forgetting that legendary Iron Butterfly riff........
  7. I'll be going down on Saturday afternoon, hopefully meeting up with some of the Nottingham Flickr group.
  8. There used to be a tackle shop at the back of the co-op in Carrington, the buildings are in the process of being flattened,
  9. Nelson Mandela is a really good choice, still not sure who I'd go for - Bob Dylan maybe?
  10. I remember the Town Arms well, used to go in there sometimes. There also use to be a church more or less next door to it - I think that got pulled down earlier.
  11. A bit careless of them.
  12. If I remember correctly, the plan was to move all into one venue - but you're right it's gone very silent.
  13. What about Calomine Lotion for all those spots (chicken ox/measles) we had to endure.
  14. Not sure if this is pointless but move your mouse over the cow, http://www.cowabduction.com/ Made me smile......
  15. Two things for me, first the smell of baking bread - we lived fairly close to the Sunblest Bakery on Hucknall Road so it was a common smell. The second would be coal fires, a bit of a rarity these days but you know as soon as you walk into an area with one burning.
  16. Just a thought and before you buy it, have a chat with Geoff Blore - he might be able to offer other pointers. Also worth checking the picture library at - http://www.picturethepast.org.uk/
  17. Hi Jools, Good choice and nice pub - not a regular (blame the kids!) but I class it as my local as I live fairly close to it. A local guy, Terry Fry, wrote a book on The History of Sherwood - there's a whole chapter on the pubs but it concentrates on the Sherwood Inn which is associated with a local family, the Wilkinsons. You can get it at Blores bookshop which is about 5 minutes away - turn left out of your main entrance and walk up Mansfield Road. If you can't get a copy, I can loan you mine.
  18. Thanks for that. One of the stations that used to broadcast from the Radio Caroline ship was Seagull and it's still going today and still uses a ship - well worth listening to they play a much broader range of music these days. Anyway, a picture of the ship is here, http://www.radioseagull.com/ship.htm Plus the page has a link to listen, if you live in the south you might pick it up on MW.
  19. If it's the chap I'm thinking of, I think he was moved on to another pub - not sure why, but Boston (Lincs) seems to ring a bell. As for getting to the Grosvenor, rarely had to get transport there and back as I lived on Haydn Road in those days.
  20. I remember the place and only went there a couple of times - not sure if was called Zhivago's then; I actually went to see a couple of bands there. One was definitely Sad Cafe and the other might have been Alex Harvey but I'm not sure on that last one. Never went to it in disco mode!
  21. These might be a bit dated now but I compiled some short histories of the pirates a few years back. http://www.zabzone.co.uk/radio/radio.htm Click on the image to get to the appropriate page.
  22. In fact it used to get so busy the car park was full with people just chatting and drinking - not sure about the year but I would agree with 73 although it could have been 72. Then they introduced a dress code and the place became as quiet as a morgue for while. The Grosvenor was where we always started before venturing into town.
  23. How about Sly & The Family Stone and I Want To Take You Higher, hopefully it's classed as soul.
