  1. It's never been the same since they got rid of the string quartet ;-)
  2. Good picture bip - is that a recent one? Certainly the Sherwins were a local landowning family. I remember the paper shop nextdoor to the pub (was it called Oakley's?). I think they operated a Post Office too? Maybe still do. They delivered our papers until the Bramcote Hills PO & newsagent opened in Sevenoaks Crescent in the mid fifties. I had my first beer in the Sherwin about 1970 and moved away in 1978. The White Lion (aka "Top House") was a Kimberley house and definitely preferred. There were three other shops in Bramcote in Chapel Street but that's for a "Bramcote" thread - not Cr
  3. I think I may have it ... It would be a temptation to name his brother, but that would leave me broken hearted and then what would become of me? ;-)
  4. The last time I was in the Sherwin bip, it was owned by an organisation called Shipstones!
  5. I tried and got the same security messages SR
  6. Not much input from this forum (should it go in Music Trivia?), but with a little help from friends: From the left: 1) possibly UFO? 2) ? 3) ? 4) Houses of the Holy ... Led Zeppelin 5) Alive ... Kiss 6) Young And Rich ... The Tubes Top row: 7) ? 8) possibly David Essex? 9) Smiler ... Rod Stewart Bottom row: 10) possibly Bob Marley? 11) Cardif Rose ... Roger McGuinn 12) ? Lastly: 13) ?
  7. I knew the track but wasn't sure if that was the "Toyland" Charlie were referring to in his clue. We shall see I hope!
  8. Jess Roden was with The Alan Bown! who covered Little Anthony and The Imperials "Gonna Fix You Good" and also recorded "Toyland" ?
  9. I'm sure you're right, but my memory's past it on that one!
  10. I remember my sister and I being taken to Grange Farm for Sunday lunch. The meals were just as described here, not forgetting the bottle of Leibefraumilch!! IIRC there was a large (to me) goldfish pool in the reception area.
  11. The Sherwin was the first pub I ever went in. 1970 I reckon. With some lads from school one lunchtime after the exams.
  12. Of course - just got back from rugby or would have answered earlier ;-)
  13. .......... Tokoloshe Man was John Kongos. Hotlegs were a one hit wonder - under that name.
  14. In 1973, five lads left the comfort of their homes and rented 29 Hartley Road (now no longer). Apart from myself, there was Dave (also from Bramcote), Jim (from Attenborough) and Darg and Oggy (real names forgotten - from Bilborough). We were all about 19 and for a year or two we had a ball! Soon girlfriends moved in - I remember Pat and Kate moving in with Darg and Oggy - and we started to expand. After six months we had taken over the houses on either side and had friends/acquantnces living in both 27 and 31. Maybe there were 15-20 "residents" altogether and goodness knows how many regular
  15. I can remember spending my hard earned here, although Selectadisc in Goldsmith Street had most of my trade. Great picture - so who can name the albums in the window then? ;-) I'll do the easy one - "Smiler" which suggest this picture was taken in 1974 . . . .
  16. Masonic Place it is! I came across an old Geographia street map of the city at the weekend and it was marked. Unlike Multimap/Google Maps etc which have the road marked but un-named.
  17. Sounds like you and I were at a lot of places at the same time Stu. Happy days indeed! Bet I beat you at pool ;-)
  18. He was indeed a great guy - hope he's ok. Do you remember his Shirley Bassey impression when Big Spender came on the juke box?
  19. Isabellas was over Mortimers Cavern pub, in an cul-de-sac next to the masonic hall on the west side of Goldsmith (not Glasshouse) Street, just above the junction with Talbot Street. I used to drink and play pool in Morts, and had my leaving bash in Isabellas when I left Nottingham in Feb 1978!
  20. His name was Steve Taylor. I remember working with him behind the bar upstairs at The Salutation in the mid 70's (how could I forget!). That was before he moved on to the Trip / County Tavern / Royal Children et al. Apologies for the long gap between postings - I've only just got here!
