  1. Mmmm never knew that tescos was from jewish origins!!!! Although we have marks and spencers here (albeit franchises), kempinski hotels (surely jewish)... A while back when palestine issue was upon us all in the news (more than normal) there were comments about avoiding 'starbucks' on forums out here (how removed jewish is that?) The only jewish problem that is out here is if you have israel stamped in your passport you cannot enter easily and of course if you are israeli - no hope! Don't want to go off topic too much, but had an interesting conversation with a arab here from jordan (obviousl
  2. I am most surprised that we don't have a tescos here. The only 'european' ones we have is carrefore and a geant - both of french origin.... and both have very french stock. We have a 'local' supermarket chain called 'spinneys' that stock waitrose products along with south african branded goods and american branded goods. The alternative to spinneysis another supermarket that has been here for 30 odd years is called 'choitrams'.... on another site for expats here, someone believed that the origin for 't choitrams' comes from the uk but I have never heard from it? You cannot do a weekly shop in
  3. Where in beeston will tescos be? Surely there is enough with sainsburys???
  4. Looks a nice place to live firbeck, but boy do they all look cold and shivery!
  5. UAE firbeck lol! Yes, a drop of rain would be welcome at the moment. Today it has been mid 40sC with 80 odd% humidity. The patchy grass that I have been nurturing all winter is looking decidedly scorched! Even the water that comes out of the hose is flamin hot.... oh and brushing your teeth in warm water is yuk!
  6. I think you're a tad touchy firbeck _ fyngers reply I read as a joke! Lighten up!
  7. Not sure what happened there but just read last 3 lines of above paragraph!
  8. When I lived there, sommerfields veg was always good on bramcote lane. The butcher although from kimberley way was fairly good but very expensive. However I can reccommend a fantastic REAL butcher been in family for 3 generations... praps fringer will know? He is in newthorpe, and is called Barlows...... even when I lived in wollaton I would get my meat from him..... very reasonable. Although sometimes the queue would be out the door! He beat melton mowbray on his pork pies... I am salvilating thinking about his home cured bacon! The bacon here is cr**p compared to his!
  9. The parade of shops on bramcote lane, off wollaton road were always busy.... generally good quality shops. I had a friend who owned a chippy/chinese in heanor and he always got his veg from the greengrocers on Bramcote Lane even though it is a fair distance. Praps because you can park outside these shops? Although they are hellishly small parking bays! Mind they do have a sommerfield!!!!!
  10. I lived on wollaton vale and I'm not posh!
  11. Do you think beeston would be helped out if the tram goes through it?
  12. WHY? Kimberley is dead!!!!Sainsburys killed it off anyway.....at least morrisons at eastwood is away from shopping parade hence there still is a parade of shops that are used - that is if you want your hair/nails done...or you fancy a mooch around a smelly charity shop!!!! God knows there are tons of them!
  13. Doubt whether theres anything else on the road!
  14. Cheers firbeck, the photo of the dragon fly is one of several constantly in my garden at the moment.... this is due to a manmade lake through my bottom garden gate. Just wanted to show you all that although I live in the desert there is lots of wildlife here .... naturally occuring due to our rulers plan on mass planting! Will try more photos later!

  19. Stan, what years was this? I wonder if it would be the same people? My grandfathers sister was named Ada.... sadly I have no idea what her husbands name was. She was born in 1903 if thats any help. I recall my grandmother ( she was mid late 60s when I was born) tellling me that Ada had lots of black servants. My dad recalled as a young adult that they did come and see my grandad and grandma in a chauffered driven posh car in the early 60s poss.I don't think they had any children but can't be sure. So annoying with only half a tale!
  20. Stan, do you know much about jamacia in the 1950s- 60s? This has relevance to my grandads younger sister who married someone possibly former diplomat and lived on a plantation out there around that time. All this information is a bit sketchy as told by grandparents - long dead and my father meeting her in very early 60s (he too is dead). It is always unfortunate when you just have a tad of family history with little way of following it up.Especially in our family history with tons of skeletons in the cupboard. I have a very old photo album from my grandfather who was born 1900, with dozens of
  21. We also have wireless everywhere here - malls, costa rip offs etc etc. Always dozens of phillopinos with their notebooks on their laps.... thing is I'm sure they're all spying on one another lol!+
  22. if we didn't have the royal family what we would have would be far worse. Yes some of them should watch their spending..... but you can bet your bottom dollar that Barack is just as expensive to move about. However, reading not that long ago about the royal family in Holland? (sure that was the country) and they live very modestly, no scandalous gossip about them. I personally hope that they skip Charles being king as I really don't think he deserves it... praps Liz feels this.....why she hasn't stepped down. And yes beefsteak, praps you may feel I'm also not able to comment on this as I no
  23. A few years ago on a trip to france (last time I ever go there) we went to normandy for a not so cheap holiday. We went to the normandy landings museum. Most of this was geared for the americans. The cemetrys of the yanks was perfectly manicured and well looked after. Did anyone read that history in the secondary curriculem of british schools is being changed. At present they study the victorians, the plague, the tudors and of course the second world war...... I have heard that these are not going to be studied anymore. Even out here my daughter is studying the above as part of her course.
  24. Amanda holdman really was the ultimate desperate to be famous candidate.... she even went on cillas blind date, long before the les dennis union. Having said that I do like her.
  25. Georgy girl why don't you join friends reunited, you may find old school friends on that.
