  1. Re #96 - I remember reading a book about Turkey, in which the author reckoned that the Turks were, on average, as bad at learning foreign languages as the English (I can't remember whether it was supposed to be an insult or a compliment!)
  2. I have heard tell that Newcastle [on Tyne] has numerous variations, and at one time an expert could almost tell the street you came from by your accent. I suspect this was overstated, but transferred to Nottingham, it would be the equivalent of distinguishing Beeston from Bulwell, or Carlton from Aspley by the accent.
  3. But surely, everyone knows that English "as she is spoke in Nottingham" is the only proper pronunciation? ! [Typed tongue in cheek - just in case anyone feels inclined to have a scrap!]
  4. Like Catfan, I HATE these long bridges. I use them when necessary, but I certainly don't enjoy the experience. They scare the living daylights out of me. Went home from my son's home in South Wales when we were living in Devon a couple of years ago. It was evening, dark, Winter, blowing a south westerly gale up the Severn estuary, and rain coming down like stair-rods. The interminably long second Severn crossing had a 40mph speed restriction for good reasons (so it was going to take even longer to get across!) Naturally, this was tending to bunch the traffic up. I tucked myself into the inside
  5. Re #78 : Well, the Bombardier ones have. Any idea whether the problems might have been with the new Alstom ones?
  6. I think Vere Street is where the bus station now is. So Lambley Street would be just about under where the Bulwell High Road leaves Main Street.
  7. Thanks everyone - that explains it. It is exactly where I originally thought it was, from the description I was given, but the 1960 map seemed to indicate that Ramsay Street ran through to Sherbrooke Road, with Wesley Street joining it more or less along the line where the wall is shown. I was confused when Terence said that Ramsay Street was a dead end - but there it is. May Terrace was, in effect, a continuation of Ramsay Street, but end-on behind the dead end wall. Thanks for the pictures on PTP - why didn't I look there first?! Terence, I think the chapel you mentioned on Wesley Street was
  8. My wife's granddad used to say, concerning "the younger generation" - bearing in mind this was probably 60 years ago, so he meant the likes of us(!) - "They'll do owt sooner than wo'k!" (It wasn't true, by the way!)
  9. I think this may be one for Cliff Ton. My mother in law, who died recently, was born and lived as a child at May Terrace, Carrington. Someone has said that it was off Sherbrooke Road, adjacent to Carrington Baptist chapel, but where it has been described to me appears on the old maps to be Ramsay Street. Was May Terrace off Ramsey Street please? A large scale map would be great (and any photos if they exist). Many thanks (in anticipation!)
  10. Before talking about somebody else, consider (1) Is it true? (2) Is it kind? (3) Is it necessary to say it?
  11. He'll need a sou'wester and leggings if he does !
  12. ...and a supply of ties Benjamin...
  13. Err...is he talking about alligators?
  14. Benjamin, I am deeply insulted - I have never, ever, been accused of being "almost normal" before... !
  15. By the way, the supposedly two-part article on Huntingdon Street bus station in "old-bus-photos" has turned into a three-part article, and parts 2 and 3 are now available to read.
  16. I'm not sure, but I have a feeling that NCT may have been the only users of the KTV series - although, as Merthyr Imp says, they were certainly not all taken. I think major operators were allowed to book blocks of numbers with their local licensing office, when they had placed orders for series of buses.
  17. ...and is it still possible to buy a goose at the eponymous fair?!
  18. Re #709 - you're right Fly2 - in my day it was the KTV301 series, manufactured in 1949, and I think they stayed on those routes until the early 1960s. Air-operated pre-selector gearboxes, and rather heavyweight bodywork from Charles Roberts of Wakefield. (Are you all asleep yet?.....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!)
  19. The number 1 did start from Hanley Street - to Aspley Estate (Rosslyn Drive), along with the 7 Bulwell and 22 Bells Lane Estate. But normally all were double deckers - our regular buses until I was 5, living on Aslockton Drive.
  20. Had a quick look at two of my old timetables. In terms of length of journey (i.e. minutes from one terminus to the other) in 1971 the longest was (surprisingly to me) the 45, which was timed at 45 minutes from Wollaton Park to Wolds Estate via Derby Road and London Road (only 44 minutes in the other direction). Next was the 71 at 42 minutes from Colwick Crossing to Rise Park Estate, only 38 in the other direction, and the similar 44 at 41 and 37 minutes. Other routes with a running time of 30 minutes or more were the 25, 43, 53 and 75. Looking at 1959, (the routes were recognisably similar b
  21. By the way, old-bus-photos.co.uk has just posted the first of a two-part article on Huntingdon Street bus station. Some might be interested. http://www.old-bus-photos.co.uk/wp-content/themes/Old-Bus-Photos/articles/huntingdon_street_bus_station_part_one.php
  22. No - Not South Sherwood Street - south side of the Old Market Square - other side of the road from the West Bridgford buses.
  23. I think the Goose Fair specials were shunted around a bit over the years. My memory is of them picking up on the south side of the Old Market Square (i.e. across the road from South Parade), then round the front of the Council House, north side of OMS, and Market Street, before heading up Goldsmith Street. I guess this would be the mid to late 1950s. The bank holiday tour of Nottingham started there as well - that must have been 1958 because it was the first NCT Leyland PD2 that I ever travelled on.
  24. Re #667 - Merthyr, sorry the only 33 that I ever knew of was the one you mentioned - Melbourne Road to City hospital via Bar Lane and Southwark Street. It only ran on Sunday afternoons for hospital visiting. It is one of the few routes I never travelled on. (On one occasion in my early teens I took a trip into Nottingham just to travel on the rather occasional and erratic 51 from the bottom of Alfred Street to Hartley Road - sad eh?!)
  25. Re #68 - Catfan, you have to be joking! "Elected and answerable to the public...?" - Do you mean like our present lot of politicians? Hahahahahahahahahahah...!!
