  1. Come on Everybody now, be honest, it's gotta be Egg and Chips, served with condiments: salt and vinegar and either tommy ketchup or HPSauce. PS: REAL Comfort Food, who doesn't ask for second helpings?
  2. Compo's post @ #1525: Oh, the smell of those caps when you hit them with a garden stone - Bootiful PS: Penny a long strip and did they give us kids some naughty pleasure!
  3. Hi Cliff, I'm sure there used to be an OAP home around Darhall Cres too. During the 60's I worked as a junior library assistant at the Bilborough Branch Library - beautiful building, spanking new, Contemporary design. Now, on Bracebridge Drive - that Darnhall Cres. skirted - there is a vast Care Home; could this have been built in place of the original OAP home? Perhaps on your travels, if you wished to, you could call in at the Home and see if they have any knowledge of a previous building on the site, or better still, call in at the user friendly library for information.
  4. Hi Bubblewrap, funny you should put on a poem with the beginning line: 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple"; because last night in bed - before dropping off - I thought about the purple, velvet jacket I have hanging in my wardrobe which I've never worn. I decided that I'd take it out today, see if it fits and if it does then I'd start wearing it - so here's hoping. PS: It doesn't matter that I'm not going anywhere special, I'm going to get to know the jacket and as with most of my clothes get to love it.
  5. Beautiful piece of prose Alison. At the wonderful age of 66, I can truly say that I have never felt so happy and free................................... To me, one of the benefits of living in this great technological age is: 'You Tube', where I can re-live the fabulous music of the 50's, 60's, 70's; my fave at the moment is 'The Lovin' Spoonful' - last week it was David Bowie. Had a great day yesterday: I varnished my hall floor and sang along and danced along to 'Radio Gold'; was still whistling and singing when I went out of doors to finish varnishing the table and garden chair. I d
  6. Brings tears and taste buds to my mind as I remember my mum's steamed puddings ( Compo's post @ #95); her jam roly poly was to die for............. PS: come to think of it, all the puddings my mum made when I was a kid could be labelled: 'Comfort Foods' - eat your heart out all you 'Masterchef's' on the telly...........
  7. Tomlinson, lovely idea for a topic.......... My earliest memory is of being with my grandad outside in the garden at Southwold Drive, helping him clean out the chickens - I must have been 3 years old at the time. PS: the image is crystal clear in my mind as I type.
  8. Yuck, Trevor, I don't know how you dare put 'that poem'!! on @ #88; I'd thought about it on occasions but considered it far too unpalatable for 'Nottstalgia'. PS: what gruesome kids we must have been to have recited this in the playground or on the way home from school - or was it that we enjoyed a touch of bad?
  9. Ate a load of blackberries from out of the garden the other day; I felt so much better today, the fruit seems to have got rid of my cold. This afternoon I helped myself to some more; blackberries fresh from the garden, real 'Comfort Food' - I'll say!
  10. "You should never put new shoes on the table, it's bad luck!" PS: Crazy me for doing such a thing! S'pose it's okay if they're old?
  11. Hi dgBrit, good to see that you're using the quote I put on 'Nottstalgia' this morning: 'Eyes bigger than your belly'. PS: If it catches, it'll soon become part of everyday speech once more - good on ya............
  12. Beefy, if I was lucky enough to have mint sprouting - even on the lawn - then I'd cultivate it; mint can be very temperamental! Let's see now what's been good in my garden this year?: the two buddleias have put on a magnificent show, not only with their blossoms of purple and mauve but with their frequent inhabitants the butterflies and bees. Seeing butterflies, dipping, darting and dancing around my garden makes me feel so happy. The fruit orchard hasn't done badly: my golden pears are bountiful and one of my 6 apple trees is weighed down with healthy looking fruit to look forward to...
  13. Remember this one?: 'Your eyes are bigger than your belly!'
  14. Commo, if you're visiting Nottingham, I believe Colwick Cheese is available at the Cheese stall, Victoria Market.
  15. Love 'Oatmeal Patties': using left over potato make small cakes, slightly dip in beaten egg, then oatmeal and fry gently in oil until crisp - great with cold meat and pickles. PS: Gordon Ramsay said that you could tell a good cook by what they could do with the left overs - had much practice with this over the years.
  16. Welcome Home Sheridan; hope you have a lovely stay, weather promises to be good for the next few days. PS: Sorry I couldn't make the Council House tour.
  17. 'Full of beans'...............energetic @ #65 Y'know there must be something in the above saying Carni: Yesterday, I caught a bus home from Bulwell that dropped me quite a distance from where I live. I was walking along, carrying a fair amount of shopping when suddenly I felt 'absolutely done in' (knackered - cream cracker'd). Funnily enough I had to keep dipping into a packet of cream crackers in the hope they'd give me some energy. I had a sudden thought: "I haven't had my beans for a time!" Haricot, Canelloni, Black Eyed, Borlotti, love 'em all; must get up to Sainsbury's some time.
  18. D'ya know, I've never tried scallops but they really do look delicious in Alison's pic @ #5. PS: promise you this, after taking a browse on 'Nottstalgia' I'm going to 'Google' them up. Rather fancy making a scallop pie. PPS: and De Da Pete, thanks for the reminder on cod's roe; delicious when simply warmed and served with chips and garden peas - accompanied with salt and vinegar of course, or even Tartar sauce.
  19. Great stuff De Da Pete @ #166; that's the way to write: without any care as to what you're saying. I'm not saying I'm agreeing but only you dares to say it! Scaredy Poohs that's me. PS: But I do think that Will Young has a pleasant singing voice.
  20. Hi Pete, thank you so much for your kind offer. I'm working on a poem at the moment, I don't know about you but it takes me such a time creating one; I aim to try and create a pulse to the poem - as in the rhythm of music. I've recently been inspired by the amount of butterflies: Peacocks and Cabbage Whites on my two splendid buddleia bushes. The butterflies have provided me with such a wonderful show whilst I'm taking a tea break from the gardening; I'm going to miss them when the blossoms die. PS: Happy Creations PPS: Carni, put your poem on please; it will give you the confidenc
  21. Carni, you must be so proud of your granddaughter, Poetry is regarded as the highest Art form.
  22. Weegee was the name of the photographer that I was trying to remember - earlier on in the thread. It was the pseudonym of photojournalist Arthur Fellig, known for his stark black and white photography: realistic scenes of urban life, crime, injury and death on the streets of New York, circa: 1930's, 40's, 50's. Weegee later worked in cinema, making his own short films; later he collaborated with film directors such as Jack Donohue and Stanley Kubrick. An Interesting and Creative character, why not give him 'a look up'.
  23. Carni, compelling poem written by your grandaughter.
  24. Great stuff for me to reminisce on Cliff Ton; Gorgeous Gals then and still are: Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale) and Emma Peel (Diana Rigg) still treading the boards.....................
  25. Aren't we privileged, to think that the late, great Buddy Holly once trod Chesterfield Market? Never get tired of hearing Buddy; every record spin is as fresh as when I first heard. God Bless Buddy Holly, forever and ever....................................
