  1. They've found a very high energy neutrino that was detected in Antarctica, they've named it a ghost neutrino. They speculate that it came from a black holes relativistic jet that is/was pointing straight at us. What with this discovery & gravity waves the cosmologists have plenty to get their teeth into...
  2. I read one of the trapped blokes book on their experiences of being trapped. They were both crammed into the space of a rabbit hutch & after every aftershock the space got a good shaking & it got a bit smaller, it was making me cringe as I read it. At least air was getting to them, water was dripping onto them as well was making them cold... I worked down Morrgreen & Hucknall pits & always had a weird feeling when I was in a heading (a dead end tunnel with one way in & out) in case the roof came in behind me & I'd be trapped, the bagging (air supply pipe) would p
  3. Thing is I've met him at reunions since & he knew what was going on all the time, I'd have poo'd my pants if I'd know he'd known back then. Said he wished she'd married me instead of the violent scumbag she actually did! Funny old world init???
  4. Funny incident I remember: There was a very pretty girl I'd met, I had my face buried in her neck when she said "you might know my Dad!" I said "who is he then?" She said "Sergeant-Major Nxxxxxxx!" I nearly died, I rapidly un-buried my face from her neck & made a sharp exit. I saw her a few times secretly after that but dare not take it any further in case he found out & killed me, lol...
  5. I'd say some of the best days Catfan, seemed a bit strange when I came back to Nottingham with all the rioting that went on that summer....... Was on the news back then that they wanted to use Rolleston Camp as a prison to hold the rioters as the proper clinks were full, but it wasn't fit for prisoners to be housed, but was it fit enough for us soldiers though...
  6. Was back in Larkhill in 1980 & missed Crusader 80, heard some stories about it though, lol. I left in March 81. Had a great time & still friends with some of the lads. When I was in QMC for 3 weeks with ischemic colitis the bloke in opposite bed sounded familiar = it was my old Sergeant, we had some laughs about the old days when he tipped my bed upside down with me still in it & threw my bedding & kit out of the window as I'd overslept, lol..
  7. Used to go up the road to the Bustard Inn pub to have a few beers, we'd sneak in through a hole we'd made in the fence so we didn't cop it off the guard commander for coming back late. There was hell to pay when the hole was discovered, they said "if you lot can sneak in so can the IRA." Got a point as was late 70's at height of the IRA bombing campaign..
  8. Yes Salisbury Plains & Sennybridge rain is especially cold, Munster-lager rain not far behind. Did the Army choose cold damp climate places for their camps to toughen us up? Makes you wonder..
  9. I lived on Glapton Road & remember it was 200 volts DC, also remember changeover to AC, would be early 60's IIRC... I started a thread called '200 volts DC leccy in the Meadows' in the Medders section on 11 September 2013...
  10. lived in a nissan hut at Rolleston Camp Larkhill when I was with 12 Missile AD regt RA, it was red hot when sunshining & freezing cold at all other times, made a right din when it rained hard, had 2 electric heaters = 1 at each end. Herbert's from other rival regt's would throw stones at our huts from the nearby road in middle of night to wake us up, we couldn't do same to them as they lived in proper brick barracks, we waited for them with fire hoses though when we heard they were coming, lol...
  11. They speculate that relativistic jets are made of stuff that just manages to escape the black holes event horizon just before it gets sucked into the black hole. Sort of like me just escaping from my mam before she gave a me a good hiding, only thing is I had to go back home as - well - I need food, & then Mam'd be waiting to give me a biffing. At least the relativistic jet wont get a biffing off the black hole, the lucky thing...
  12. Went for a walk round MFN at Shipley Boat last night, there were scores of bikes there to look at, some new & some old, got yabbering to a few blokes as well, frindly crowd. Had a cheeseburger - well you have to don't you? There were some pretty girls there dressed in leather, PHWOAR, also some not so pretty girls, lol...
  13. They've discovered a black hole ripping apart & eating a star & I presume any planets that were orbiting the star. (info Scientific American & other science sites) First time this has been observed. There's a jet of particles that's sprouted out of the black hole that's traveling at almost light speed..
  14. When I was a kid at school in the 1960's & you were naughty you got a biffing/cane/slipper/strap so were more careful not to get caught next time, I never got lines or detention, always physical pain. What punishment do you teachers give the kids nowadays when they've been naughty now you can't beat up the kids?
  15. Used to go to Hucknall welfare now & again... My usual haunt was Bestwood Welfare Sunday night disco's, there were lots of pretty (& some not so pretty) girls used to go there & I actually pulled a few times. I lived on Park Road back then so not far to stagger home after a few Mansfield bitters. Oh yeah Bestwood Welfare's closed now for some reason..
  16. Ooh not good Brew. We got bounced around a good bit but I wasn't seasick, I was a bit scared as it's 1'st time I've been on a boat since I've started with ischemic colitis, the Belfast girl we met was a bit green though, poor thing..
  17. Done most of the things I've wanted to do; I never did cop off with Olivia Newton John though, ah well never mind eh? Always wanted to go to America & I went, will hopefully go again later in the year, maybe west coast or rockies this time... Went on a whale/dolphin boat trip in Gran Canaria last month & it was brilliant & saw loads of dolphins & a whale. Seen dolphins & whales before at Miami seaquarium but they were captive & I wasn't happy about that, these were in the wild & free, just as I like them to be...
  18. Took a few driving tests in my life, 1'st at Chalfont in the 70's, then an army conversion test in Germany, then a Rushcliffe taxi drivers test, then a Nottingham city taxi test, then an ADI part 1 written test, (100 questions) then an ADI part 2 advanced driving test, & I passed them all. Hope I could still pass OK. Also took & passed ADI part 3 instructing test, but don't suppose that counts though..
  19. Been to Gran Canaria for the last week & I didn't see any white eggs = they were all brown. Seems the Spanish have gone over to selling only brown eggs nowadays. The sausages had a different but not unpleasant taste. I had porridge followed by a full English breakfast most mornings, noticed the Germans & Scandinavians were necking the English breakfasts big time...
  20. I remember my aunties Mother-in-law in Chester-le-Street had an anderson shelter in her garden, I loved playing in it when we lived up there... There was a brick & concrete air raid shelter in Trent Bridge school playground. We had a nuclear attack drill & had to go & sit in the smelly thing in 1963 in the Cuban missile hoo-ah...
  21. People see a sign saying 'free for 1 hour' & like me think "that's good" & it's human nature to wonder off not thinking to read the smaller print notice board. I wonder if they employed a human behavour psychologist to come up with the idea. I know a lot of firms waffle on in their small print T&C's knowing most people wont read them, then when Mr/Mrs Public complain they point to paragraph 93 subsection 42 where it says "you will be conned & screwed whatever you do."
  22. About same distance for us to go to Hucknall or Bulwell, so will go to Bulwell in future so I wont get caught out again. Hucknall own goal as far as I'm concerned. They're always moaning people wont go shopping to Hucknall town centre, I wonder why?
  23. Went down Hucknall & drove on to the market place car park: Said on a payment board near ticket machine in largish letters '1 HOUR FREE' though "that's good" & swanned off to the shops. Came back 40 mins later to a penalty notice, collared the warden to ask what's going on? He pointed to a small notice that said in effect you still have to get a ticket from machine for 1'st hour. I asked him how I see the small sign while sitting in my car several yards away? He said "other car park notices are even smaller" Seems a very sneaky conniving way to go on to me. Was a very expensive shop
  24. When we lived at Gotham we had an electric cooker as there was no gas in the village back then, (think there is now though) when we moved to the Meadows (Glapton Road) we had a gas ring as well as an electric cooker, for some reason I was scared to death of the gas ring, later when we got a proper gas cooker I was scared of that as well. I remember Gotham was supplied by overhead electric cables & every time it thundered we had a power cut, Mam'd think the shilling had run out & put a bob in, then when the lights didn't come back on she would look out the back window to see if South No
  25. Remember hearing about a lady complaining when she picked up her new car: the number plate = 2 FAT, lol..
