  1. You may recall that a couple of weeks back I described a fiasco of a 'Targeted Lung Health Check', which left me with 14 hours of very unpleasant and potentially dangerous side effects from Ventolin as well as feeling rough for days. I put in an email complaint and after a week had heard nothing until I realised the message had bounced back into my spam folder due to an incorrect address. So. I sent it again.. with a corrected address. It did not bounce back. ...One week later, still no response, so I sent another message threatening to raise my issues to a formal complaint to the QCC i
  2. Mick, I sympathise as I'm pretty sure I acquired Covid on my flight out for a Canaries cruise last Feb. I wasn't wearing a mask. Thing is I don't think basic masks offer much protection from airborne virus that's already there. My understanding is that they are thought to reduce transmission by people who are already infected, maybe asymptomatically, by trapping a lot of droplets they might otherwise be spraying about.
  3. Morning! I was in Nottm over the weekend visiting my brother but mainly, to meet up with with an old friend who was a neighbour, and a school buddy through Henry Whipple and then HP. We haven't seen each other since at least 1970, but more likely 1968. over half a century ago. Rich is now living in Cornwall. We had a really good natter for about 3 hours. Our Ben may remember his family. Chambers', at 28 Southglade. Selfie here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/D5t3ACEaoXc6Z6kN6 Anyway..we met at the Griffin's Head in Papplewick. First time I've ever been in
  4. Oz, I'm broadly in agreement with Jim on this. The bottom line for me is that the whole 'Leave' campaign, was based on lies, half truths and innuendo. In effect, that meant that by leaving the EU, people 'reclaimed', things which they had not lost in the first place. The 'Leave' liars claimed three main things: 1. We no longer controlled our borders. This is complete bull, based on a deliberate misreading of the EU 'Freedom of Movement' principle, under which any EU citizen could move freely between EU countries and work in any of them. In other words it worked both ways and th
  5. I assume you mean Altruism emanating from what you say is a small group of society.. AKA 'The rich'. It's not Altruism which determines their tax bills.. it's Govt. And it's in the present Govt. where Altruism is severely lacking. There's no shortage of Altruism in wider society.
  6. No. It's just evidence of inequality.. and yes, Oxfam take a political stance on it, but whether they do or don't, the evidence stands. It is you who is getting all fired up about 'implied blame' etc. I've said repeatedly that I don't blame 'the rich' in general, however you define them, so long as their wealth is honestly and legally gained. That does not mean that the current status quo should be maintained. What if we turn it on its head? There are plenty in our society, and I'd argue mostly on the broad political right.. who like to blame the poor for their own conditio
  7. Buddy Holly died on my 10th birthday 65 years ago today ...
  8. My JVCs are the HA-D600 model. They have little labels on them declaring them 'Digital Ready', which is a pretty meaningless statement, but pretty symptomatic of the time when everything from kettles to clothes pegs was judged to benefit from association with the wonders of digital.. There is nothing digital about their technology, or the signal they are meant to reproduce and in fact the analogue output from CD is limited in frequency to a range of 20Hz to 20 KHz. .narrower than some pure analogue sources. That said they are a semi- open backed design which works well but like all
  9. BK, until you mentioned it, I'd never heard of 8D. However, I looked it up and found info which is in the link below. Briefly, it is a sort of 'fake' surround sound, created by adding echoes etc., which fool the ear/ brain into 'hearing' surround sound. It reminds me of something EMI did years ago which I think may have been called 'Sensaura' It worked without headphones.... until you moved your head...whereupon the effect fell apart. So using headphones obviously gets past that problem. If you like the effect I see no reason not to pursue it. I'll check it out when I have
  10. I definitely didn't see it in the late 60s as I barely saw any telly, being too busy being a fab DJ. I was also living where I am now when I saw odd bits. So I must have seen the 1978 re-showing. I didn't see all of it as it mystified me, but I do recall being quite bemused at some of the scenes I did see. The female lead seen in what I assume was her bedroom, in her underwear. Not quite hard core porn, but a bit odd for a kids programme. Lots of chatter online, and it's been released on DVD. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/The_Owl_Service_(TV_series) https://www.imdb.
  11. Amlodipine. Doesn't sound too pleasant to me, but mercifully I don't have to take it. I think three things are apparent. 1. We all react differently to meds. 2. We can frequently 'get used' to meds after a while. 3. Some meds just aren't for us. I recall being given a Beta Blocker about 30+ years ago long before any heart issues were apparent, as a non addictive anti anxiety treatment. It worked a bit.. but for the first few days my legs and feet felt like lead, as the drug stopped my heart from responding to demand, when climbing stairs for e.g. Amlodipine is ruled out f
  12. What are the BP tabs Jim?
  13. That IS the point!!! I would venture that most people regard the massive shift in wealth and incomes in the last three years as both unjust, AND ethically unacceptable., especially when all the indicators point to this situation continuing to worsen. I'm at a loss to understand exactly what you find so objectionable about this being pointed out? Let's try another tack.. 1. Do you accept the Oxfam figures? ( Forget about blame.. implied or otherwise.) Do you also accept the UK 'ONS' figures which confirm the effect in the UK. I.e., that UK rich have got massi
  14. I think I explained a week or so back what an almighty hassle the Targeted Lung Health Check set up caused me. In particular a reaction to being given 4 doses of Ventolin with no warning of possible side effects or possible drug interactions despite me making it clear to the bloke doing the testing that I have Heart Failure and am on numerous meds. I put in a detailed and lengthy complaint via email but got no response.. not even an acknowledgement. It turned out there was something wrong in the email address I'd been given and my messages had bounced back, but into my Spam folde
  15. It was you who raised the 'spectre' of 'paying 45% tax' somewhere 'upthread'. You and I and most others probably, know that the 45% rate only applies from £125K upwards or whatever, and yet you used it it to support your argument around human greed. I clearly stated I'd be very happy to be subject to that rate, as no doubt would many others. I can't be bothered to do the maths and I'll take your word that the notional tax on £25k of the total income is 60%, but as you clearly hint.. that's just a statistical artefact and %ge paid on the total income is still way below 45
  16. Only if insinuation is demonstrated by analysis of the actual words used. We disagree on that point. Much the same as yours I imagine. Such as "to suggest, without being direct, that something unpleasant is true:" (Cambridge Dictionary). The Oxford has the same definition online and so do others. Why can't you see the Oxfam article for what it is? It's a summary of a much bigger, 50+ page report. It's a clear statement of fact surrounding the rapid increase of inequality globally in the last 3 years. The rich have got massively richer,
  17. By the way.... Nobody in the UK pays 45% tax on their income.. Let's look at somebody on £150k p.a.a.. figures approx. Your Tax liability would be £52k, leaving £98k, so your tax is actually close to 33%, not 45%. This is because you pay nothing on the first £12.5 K, 20% from £12.5k to £35k 40% from £35k to £125k and 45% on the rest. It's true you would also pay NI of £8.5k, but your take home pay would still amount to £89.5k, or roughly 3 times the UK median annual salary BEFORE tax etc. Someone on £200k would of course get closer to 45% tax, as around £7
  18. So, you are of course entitled your personal reading of a piece which nowhere states or insinuates that the 5 richest have become so at the expense of the poor. It is your interpetation.. not the actual words, which claims that Oxfam makes the 5 richest directly and deliberately responsible for impoverishing the poor. Oxfam do not say that anywhere in their article. They simply use the fact that the 5 richest have doubled their wealth, as a starting point. There's nothing untrue about it. so I don't see how it is 'less than honest'. You seem to have missed, or be denying this pa
  19. Interesting... I'm not sure whether it was here, or on Pinkfishmedia, where I queried the current usage of the term 'Oligarch'. I was first made aware of the Term 'Oligarchy' whilst studying Political Theory at Uni in the 1980s. One particular book 'Political Parties', by Robert Michels was recommended and in it Michels outlines his 'Iron Law of Oligarchy', which basically states that in any democracy, power will inevitably flow upwards to a small 'ruling elite' (an 'Oligarchy') which then maintains it's hold by controlling access to power and information etc. There's more than a
  20. I don't recall saying that anything the Tories have done counts as 'Good Governance'. I agree that there is paralysis, but I'd put that down much more to incompetence than anything else. But also, as you slightly acknowledge with regard to attacks on our Judiciary.. the current 'impasse' performes several functions form the perspective of Sunak and Co. 1. It provides endless opportunities to blame the Courts and the Judges, both home and abroad. Taken in the context of growing attempts, especially since Johnson waffled his way into power, by the Tories to set themselves above the L
  21. Before I reply to Jim, Here's the rest of my previous reply which Kev had to edit to sort things out. I copied it into a Document File on my PC before Kev deleted it. On 1/24/2024 at 5:23 PM, Brew said: "in no way undermines the fact that they have also doubled their wealth". - So what? We, all of us, have much more than doubled our wealth over the years so is it the amount or the length of time they are trying impugn? It does not take away from the stupendous amount they have given away, chicken feed or not. I'm quite surprised at the disparaging and seemingly res
  22. I saw exactly the same Stuart., on both my PC and phone. Also, the 'Reply' box was overlain on top. At that stage, I was unable to do anything to edit the post and the reply box would accept text but not create a post when I pressed 'Submit Reply' to try move the thread on. Part of the issue is the very short window allowed for editing posts... I don't understand the need for that. Other sites I go on have a time limit on post editing, but it's much longer. What that creates is a situation where, If you're posting a complex reply, you're a bit reluctant to post it and then add by edit
  23. Thanks for sorting it Kev. I suspect it's more likely it was something about one of the quotes that I put up rather than just linked to, I generally try to avoid copy and paste of articles which also contain graphics etc.. but that one was pretty central to the discussion between Jim and me, so I wanted our audience, such as it might be, to also be clear on what it said. Still never mind. All is well.
  24. Mea Culpa, Mea Culpa, mea Culpa!!! Jim is correct and has just beat me to it. Apologies to any and all who want to post in the Politics Thread but my last reply to Jim seems to have tipped it over the edge.. I think I broke the internet.. .. I've tried but can't do anything from this end, so we are all in the hands of our mighty leader Kev/Cliff-ton..
  25. From the point of view of the dispassionate observer, of course your argument makes sense. However, we are not governed by dispassionate observers, but by people with agendas and opinions. 'Opinions' flourish in the absence of empirical evidence, but in reality, our political system is a mix of opinion and fact. The nearest thing we have to 'dispassionate observers' are our courts and judges, and in my view it is no accident that our courts and judges are subject to increasing defamation and even threat, by the forces of the Far Right, which have to a considerable extent infiltrated the Cons
