  1. I think it is.. because it is wrapped up in 'culture wars', NeoCon economic 'thinking' and all of the rest. If it may not be true, how can the principle have merit? Stereotypes are never correct, nor do they bear even superficial examination.
  2. Well I certainly can't disagree too much with that.. having been a victim of it myself. In my early days in the Careers Service I was required to put in a simple monthly 'stat', detailing how many Guidance Interviews, Groupwork Sessions, Employer Visits etc., I had done. These were added into whatever reporting was fed back to Central Govt, which was mostly, youth employment/unemployment figures etc. It wasn't an onerous task. I had a caseload of 'schoolies', a section of the 'unemployed' register, a section of the Employer /Training Organisation base and that was it. I was pretty much auton
  3. Spent my day (again) battling with a supposedly simple Bathroom refurb. Expensive products not living up to their 'rep' etc. Item I wanted from Screwfix is suddenly 'out of stock', except the site doesn't say so.. you are supposed to 'divine' it by clairvoyance. Simple 'clacker' basin waste turns out to have defective chrome plating... I won't go on... Try it all again tomorrow. Apparently 'God loves a tryer'.. I think he overlooked me..
  4. As I've said elsewhere.. I'm quite busy at present with a bathroom refurb, so my eye has been off the detail of politics..but... I see the Rwanda Bill has passed. We'll see what it actually DOES., apart from being Part One of the Tory Distraction Plan, in the fullness of time..but meanwhile the boats are still arriving..people are still dying, and nobody has a workable answer. Part Two of the Tory Distraction Plan.. (Just to explain.. for those who still don't understand.. the Tories absolutely cannot defend their appalling record, so they are desperately casting around
  5. I don't have anyone on 'Ignore'. I like to hear what everyone has to say. I'm quite capable of ignoring content I find personally uninteresting etc., and perfectly capable of challenging OR ignoring views I find objectionable.
  6. Carly is a very attractive lady and had some rather 'arresting' album covers back in the day. I recently bought a five album 'retrospective' and to be honest, she is/was a fairly average singer, who came from a very wealthy family. https://www.classicrockhistory.com/top-10-carly-simon-album-covers/
  7. Thing is Kev..there was so much amazing and varied music around at the time, the bar was very high and even excellent songs could sink without trace..
  8. Ben I've seen that vid many times. May have even posted it here myself. It's wonderful and that young lady can certainly dance, but it's not original. It was made in 1975.. a good ten years after Rick Derringer's band The Mc Coys had their original hit. Here's the real story.. The girl is called Lisa Leonard Dalton and was hired to dance to the tune in C 1975, a good ten years after the original hit. Also look at Rick Derringer's hair. no way it would have been that long in 1964 or whenever. There are various videos out there explaining it all but they have something in them
  9. And just to lighten things up a bit.. a song which always makes me think of spring, but only because he mentions 'Home Thoughts From Abroad'.. 'now that April's there...'
  10. This is my fave Animals song. And one that members Burdon and Price wrote. I could imagine that being originally written by the likes of Bukka White ( who I believe preferred to be called Booker..) Dig!
  11. Love the little girl. My Granddaughter used to be like that whenever there was music. Obviously she's far too sophistcated now.. she's eight!
  12. This is one of my favourite songs from the late Nanci Griffith. From her album 'Little Love Affairs', this is 'Gulf Coast Highway'. The song is basically a love song about a long term relationship, kept going through hardship etc..and it tells of 'Bluebonnets' .a.k.a. Lupins. There's another version on Youtube with a great video..but awful sound which I'll also post. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZu-ui3o0ek&list=OLAK5uy_kDlSt3Szdd6lQEuskbs8OxuEGy0IHtra0&index=6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=okUYwIdxRWs I'm just an old romantic...
  13. Hi Mrs B. Yep, I love Lupins too. Those gigantic blue grey aphids which attack Lupins are pretty difficult to eradicate, but I usually win. I prefer single coloured Lupins, especially red ones which seem to vibrate in the borders. There's a named one called 'My Castle', which I lost over winter but have just planted another. Also got a couple called 'Legendary Red Shades, Legendary Blue Shades' etc.. from B&Q.. and another yellow. As for aches.. I can't really kneel since my knee ops, so it's sit or bend and it's still too wet for sitting.. Very little flowering in the garden, e
  14. Due to us having something vaguely approaching decent weather.. I took the weekend off from fretting about my bathroom refurb and set about the garden. Yesterday I cut the lawn at the back, then planted up a few Lupins and other things from the garden centre. I noticed all had been nibbled at by something, but could find nothing on them or in the pots. I was left with just one Geum in a pot on the patio... I thought about cutting the front grass but was too 'whacked'. Later in the evening I went out with my torch and found FIVE snails all feasting on one Geum plant.. They are now h
  15. I'm not at the stage of hammering screwis in yet.. and I have a selection of hammers ranging from toffee hammer to 'FBH'.. The skill of course in in hammering the screw in just far enought to allow for the final, crucial turn with a screwdriver.. My problem.. now solved, was how to place the wall hanging brackets at a suitable height to both get the washbasin at correct height AND allow just enough space below a window sill and above the washbasin to accommodate a toughened glass self adhesive splashback of fixed size. I shall prevail...
  16. I'm presently just standing back and looking on in bewilderment at politics everywhere. I'm also far more concerned with decoding the fitting instructions for a new bathroom unit, which seems to be at least as difficult as understanding Linear B script or Truss's inane ramblings..

  18. As with Rayner.. we'll have to wait and see. However, it seems his party has known of 'allegations' for months and only now taken action. I think that's the fourth Tory MP to lose the whip recently. To quote Lady Bracknell: 'For one MP to lose the whip may be deemed unfortunate, but for FOUR to lose the whip smacks of carelessness'
  19. Trust me Mick.. I am NOT rushing. It's not in my nature.
  20. I'm cleverer than that Margie!!... The wash basin will be mounted on a wall hung unit, so flooring just goes under.. And the loo is separate.... Flooring will encounter the door architrave, but the simple solution is to cut away a few mm at bottom of architrave, using a 'multitool with a 'plunge' blade so flooring slides under. Any slight imperfection at floor edges will be hidden by skirting fitted afterwards, with adhesive and/or sealant. Couple of pipes for towel rail need to be got round..that's all, and any cutting again hidden by those nice chrome pipe collars, which ju
  21. Absolutely. That time is here, but since I can't afford to pay tradesmen.. The back pain started before I started in bathroom, which is so far just painting, although I did have to isolate, empty and then lift off the poncy stainless steel heated towel rail as impossible to get a brush or roller behind it. All done now. Ten minutes of painitng needed then it's just the new basin/unit. Flooring literally goes down like laminate flooring, but has its own backing and has waterproof joints. Easy enough, and it's only a small bathroom. Bath and shower stay, just getting new magnetic seals for
  22. It's on hold. Paintwork is sorted. New unit is wall mounted. Just four screws for brackets and hang it in place, pre- assemble basin tap and waste then drop in and connect up. But not till I get the all clear from Doc. Last is to put down some 'click together' flooring and a bit of skirting. When thata done sort out some decorating elsewhere, new carpets throughout then that's me done. Anything beyond a bit of gardening will not be done by me.
  23. @ Peveril Peril. Re: knee replacements. In my experience after having both done, they were pretty good at pain management in hospital, giving Oxycodone for a day or so.. then morphine. They also sent me home with morphine, codeine etc. Sadly I can't take morphine or codeine alongside my heart meds..it gets dangerous, so I pretty much had to manage with paracetamol. If a big cry baby like me can do that I'm sure you can! In my experience getting the staples out is a major milestone and cuts pain a lot. Next is to achieve the bend in the knee. It hurts but doing the prescrib
  24. After moaning that I was coming down with a cold..I wasn't. Turned out to be a flare up of allergic rhinitis, which I can get anytime, but this probably caused by springtime tree pollen. A good old traditional remedy called Momethasone Furoate Spray has helped hugely. However, about a week ago I woke up with severe lower left back pain. Seems muscular, and I just assumed I'd pulled a muscle, but no idea how. However..now got central low abdomen pain which hurts more on left if pressed. Bad enough to stop me doing much, which is handy as I'm halfway through refurbishing bathroom and
