  1. Spin speed is a bit meaningless unless you also take into account the diameter of the drum. A smaller diameter drum will have a lower speed at its circumferance, than a larger drum spinning at the same speed. Or summat..
  2. Just listening to 'The Christmas Session' on BBC4. A load of folkies doiing Christmas stuff. Unthanks, Thea Gilmore, Bellowhead etc. Apart from the cheering, it kind of reminds me of the Christmas Carol Services we had at High Pavement Chapel, when I was a schoolie..
  3. Today I awoke intending to do some weight training and go for a swim. In the end I felt a bit 'iffy', so decided instead to do nothing all day. I did it with enthusiasm. I recently read somewhere that there are positive health benefits to having a day every so often where you do nothing. Seems like a plan.
  4. I think it's something to do with the tilt of the Earth's axis, or the wobble, or summat. But I don't quite get it either. https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/ten-things-december-solstice.html Col
  5. Oi!!! I built those tower blocks .. ( with a bit of assistance from a few others) They were perfectly OK when I left them..
  6. My day by the way is fab. The afternoons get lighter from now, and the mornings from the 21st... Onwards and upwards!!
  7. Henry Whipple, from about 1953-1959.
  8. Donkey Stone. They came in various colours. I think it's a Lancs. term. I've just learned here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donkey_stone .. that all Donkey Stones were made from stone from two quarries, one in Northampton and the other at Appley Bridge near Wigan, which is about 15 mins drive from here.
  9. Indeed..! Plus.. "I can't stand 'ere chattin' all day! I've got me nets steeping, I've pots to side and clinkers to riddle.."
  10. Some of the horrors described here are no doubt true, but were certainly not my general experience. We weren't 'posh', but we weren't 'scruffy' either. My Dad worked 'down't pit' and my Mum was a very thrifty housekeeper who seemed to me to be constantly cleaning , or washing or mending, and sometimes when I was maybe 10 or thereabouts she had a job in a Textile Co called 'Automatic Braiding' which involved her coming home at about 9:00 every evening. I never settled till she was home and especially if Dad was on 'afters'', although I'd go to bed as instructed at whatever time and just
  11. Hi Ben. We were at No. 40 from around 1951/2. Can't recall exactly when Mum left, but she was in residential care for around 6 years and died in 2015, so maybe 2008/9. We no longer have any stake in that address and I have no idea who lives there, but it is directly opposite the fairly recently built 'Forum Drive'. People came and went, but when I was a kid, it was us at 40, Gambles at 42, Sanders at 44, Bramleys at 46, Smiths at 48, French at 50 and Wass at 52. But Wass's went off to Oz or somewhere late 50s early 60s. Speaking of recluses. There was a bloke who lived al
  12. Late response here. I was there 1960 - 65. Albert's leg (from the calf downwards I believe) was generally described as being 'pot', when he took over from the, much lamented Harry 'Taff' Davies. Stanley Middleton taught me both English Lit and Language for some years. Was also taught by E.W.N Smith, Bert Dodd, ? Steele (Science) Stevenson (Geog) 'Puff' Graham (History) Some other quite old History teacher who insisted on reading great tracts from accounts of ancient battles in the Graeco- Roman period etc. Was taught by Bill Gray too, but never by Messrs. Mardling or Millidge.
  13. Best wishes and a speedy recovery to all who are suffering. Ben. Briliant to hear you are out and about. If you can cope with the ubiquitous speed bumps on Bestwood Est., you must be getting better. Did you take in Southglade Rd? Must say that whenever I go through there now, it is very saddening. To think how beautiful the fields were which extended out from Southglade Rd and Padstow Rd. To think of all those lovely old railway lines gone. And to think of the community on Bestwood in the 50s. A real mix of folks from all sorts of backgrounds and pretty much throw
  14. I too didn't know your Dad RR, but you have my sympathies and my thoughts. Col
  15. Certainly agree with you on the blues stuff. In fact as far as I know even the term 'Rock and Roll' has connotations which are 'not necessarily' to do with music. A quick listen to 'Kitchen Man' by Bessie Smith is enlightening. Elmore James songs such as 'Shake Your Moneymaker' which were heard by wider audiences as a result of Jeremy Spencer's part in the original Fleetwood Mac. Countless other examples.
  16. And Good Luck to Compo for the test!
  17. I can't see these things. Remind me how you are supposed to view them?
  18. Hi Margie. This is what I was trying to post when the site went a bit 'off' last Weds. I really don't think that 'Baby It's Cold Outside' is anything more than a mildly comic song. It was, after all, written by a married couple. I reckon that it is about mutual seduction. You have to think about the context and times it was written in. It was written in 1944 by Frank Loesser and his wife, and performed by them. From Wikipaedia: If you examine the lyrics.. and continue to listen in the context of 1944... The man is clearly trying to get her to stay
  19. Hey Paul.. They showed that film at High Pavement. In the run up to Christmas we had assorted 'treats'. The Carol Service at the old HP Chapel was one. Assorted plays. Class 'Christmas Parties', 'Dinky Dunn's' very 'explosive' Chemistry lectures.. and a film show in the ''SLT' (Science Lecture Theatre), for which you paid sixpence admission. I remember seeing 'Treasure Island' , and then 'The Ship That Died of Shame'. I think I've only seen the latter once more on the telly. I set the Tivo Box to record TSTDOS and also a film featuring Jack Warner and a train crash..'Train ofEve
  20. My day just got better. Just logged in without the need for any VPN nonsense. Somebody somewhere must have fixed something. Whoever it was.. Thank you!!
  21. I have just logged in without the aid of a VPN. I claim a miracle... :)
  22. Yebbut.. I can get on here with my phone. I can get Freeview. I still have a TV aerial on the roof with a booster amp in the loft feeding three bedrooms and the lounge. I'll always be able to find some rubbish to watch so long as they keep transmittiing to 'air'!!
  23. Don't mince your words RR. Say wot ya mean!! I've got a smart TV in the lounge. but I don't see how it would do anything other than deliver terrestrial channels without connecting to a Virgin or similar gizmo via W-Fi or ethernet? And recording? On what if I bin my Tivo/V6 OK I'm sure I could 'pair' my TV with some local unsecured wi-fi source.. like next doors except everybody round here is wise enough to have their netwrok secured.
