  1. Computers developed to read people's minds Computers can tell what we are thinking by analysing patterns of activity in our brains, new research shows. Thinking of a simple word such as apple creates a unique response in our minds that can be captured by brain scans. Machines could also soon be able to understand hundreds of complex thoughts, because they can predict what they will look like in our minds, according to researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, in Pittsburgh, whose study is published in the journal Science tomorrow. The scientists developed a computer system which can ac
  2. Warnings of rioting as prison population surges The prison population is on course to hit 100,000 in four years’ time, after hitting a new record of 83,000 for the first time. The Prison Officers’ Association warned that suspected criminals might be going free because there are not enough cells to house them while prisons watchdog Anne Owers also said that conditions in jails were the worst she had known in eight years, with evidence of low level unrest in some prisons. Adding to fears of an overcrowding crisis, Lord Woolf, a former Lord Chief Justice, warned of a summer of “small scale
  3. I suppose this is more late 50`s and 60`s than 70`s,but I thought it was pretty appropriate. -- Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot. There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me, For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn. We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn, We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn. We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and

  5. Could not agree more, Mickety! I suppose that having paid squillions for the web site, and having to compete with Facebook ,they are getting very little use, hence the free web mail,in an attempt to win back custom.

  9. O.K. you wits, what do you make of this? DID UFO HOVER OVER BEESTON? 13 May 2008 People in Beeston have reported seeing a possible UFO. A bright and stationary triangular light was said to be seen over the town square coupled with a loud noise for about five minutes at around 11.30pm on Saturday. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "At first we thought it looked like an helicopter, but maybe not." Notts police took a call about a possible UFO sighting at 10pm on Saturday. The caller hung up before giving the exact location. Did you see anything? Have you seen a UFO?

  13. I think ,Dick, this film has been discussed elsewhere on this site.Simon Rous who plays the Chief Inspector on the `Bill` was the other lead. I think you can buy a copy from C.D. Universe in America. There is even very useful info on how to alter your CD player on this site for `foreign films`.Cheers ,Stan
  14. Ah Geriatrics ,then! Maybe we could sign up `The Zimmers`?
  15. There is still the cost involved in organising this event which would be CONSIDERABLE. Maybe the event was organised to celebrate the intended enormous countrywide labour victories? Or possibly to do as the Romans with `circuses and bread` to appease the mobs!
  16. ` but also sonic booms from aircraft breaking the sound barrier`. Although slightly off the subject, the famous lady pilot Diana Barnato Walker flew to heaven this week. Relevance? One evening in 1963 in the mess at RAF Middleton St George, the Wing Commander Flying, John Severgne, idly suggested that Diana might like to fly one of the RAF’s new supersonic Lightnings. She jumped at the chance and on August 26 1963, following clearance from the Ministry of Defence, she took off and reached a speed of Mach 1.65 (1,262 mph), making her the first British woman to break the sound barrier.
  17. City Pulse brings you a host of FREE performances from a selection of popular artisits in Nottingham's famous Old Market Square. FREE, Red? I think not! Be interesting to find out though just how much it cost and where the money has come from. I too agree with Frank ,the bands are obscure and probably appeal to a tiny cross section of the public. Could be an attempt to deflect attention away from the disaster of the recent elections by your noble labour council?
  18. Do you think they are trying to tell us something? Do you mean they Noah something we don`t?
  19. A little more info for you in todays NEP entitled, PRAISE FOR NOTTINGHAM CINEMAS
  20. Well, Eileen as a former student at your esteemed place of learning, when it was just `the Tech', I remember the Cavendish cinema well. It is rather sad to see this once proud building reduced to its present use as a `cash and carry' type emporium. On my last visit from Oz I passed by it ,how degraded it is today. On St. Ann`s Well Rd. there were 2 cinemas, the downmarket `Empress' which is now a mosque at the Bath St end,and the Cavendish which I remember as being rather `posh' The one thing I always remember was the magnificent display of world war 2 weapons just after the war ended. An o
  21. Whilst on the subject of Friar Tuck`s Habit ,how many others of you have been dismayed to have the friar written out of the present Robin Hood series ? What about Robin`s Saracen bow instead of the famous English long bow?... and the inclusion of the dark skinned arabic looking woman?
  22. Mick, here`s a true story from 1960. If the Chinese is the one opposite the entrance to Elm Ave or the Chase or whatever its called(where Hollygirt School is). My mates and I on a Friday lunch used to eat there as a change from College food. A 3 course fixed menue was 2/6d(yes7 1/2 pence!). On this particular Friday they were very busy and so we left our half crowns under the plate and departed. 2 minutes later we were surrounded by screaming ranting Chinese cooks and waiters with meat cleavers and knives! We went back with them and showed them where our money was. All quiet.
  23. It belongs to Grace Brothers ,Mick. Surely you have heard of `Coop de Grace !' (Groan Groan)
