  1. Remember Mr Williams well although he was the PE and games master the best spots coaches were Mike Graham and Phil Barwick who coached the rugby both played for Notts RFC in the 50s/60s Joe Morley coached the swimming

As I recall GS Gants was an engineering factory on the corner of Brand st opposite was Marjorie Butlers shop she had two sons Derek and Roy and a daughter also Marjorie who was a WRAF.This shop later became a bokies.   9. Worked as a paper boy from Bill Whites shop on Meadow Lane in the late 50s early 60s. My round was Sneinton Hermitage, St Stevens, Road Notintone St, Sneinton Hollows, Sneinton Road early starts before school and then after school Saturday morning and evenings plus the Football post/News as an extra round during the season and Sunday mornings Hard work but loved it. 15 bob (75p) a week brought my first bike a Viking Ian Steel 21 inch racing wheels, drop handle bars, 10 gears from George Mellors shop on Colwick Road at the princely sum of £21 pounds he let me have it on HP at 11 shillings a we

Hi Thanks for your response I don,t know the person you refer to however HMS Raleigh was the RN training base for new recruits over the age of 17 it is located at Torpoint in cornwall the training was of 16 weeks duration whereas HMS Ganges was the training base for Juniors ( Boys aged from 15 to 17 at Shotley Gate Nr Ipswich in Suffolk Training at Ganges was 12 months duration.
  11. Hi ashley Unfortunately no the fitters were a seperate breed and rarely mixed with footplate staff as they held them responsible for breaking their engines through misuse and abuse

  13. Hi P&B I was fortunate to work at Colwick loco in 1962 when I left school They actually used to pay me to be around engines all day got to fire them and even got to drive some. Little did they know that as an avid spotter I would have paid them for the pleasure. However the 49 shillings they gave me helped to fund my away days to York Doncaster Crewe Tamworth etc they even gave me free travel passes to help me get there. I didn't go to school with you or your brothers Arthur and John but I am the same age as your sister Margaret we lived opposite you on Grainger street I remember your mum and dad Arthur and Phoebe.   19. Passed this spot every day on the way to school. The house in the middle belonged to a family called Smith( Eric and Madge daughter called Margaret ) Eric was ex Navy worked as a with BR as a platelayer mainly in the Melton Mowbray area.
  20. A bit of a gap between now and the last post but I am new. I was a member of 138 squadron ATC based on Trent Lane from 1959 to 1963 when oddly enough I joined the Royal Navy going on to serve in Submarines for 10 years. Clearly I was impressed by the Airforce. During that time we went on annual camps to RAF Ballykelly,RAFKinloss We also did air experience flights at RAF Newton Syerston and Swinderby remember being in the mess at Newton with Apache by the Shadows playing constantly I have been a fan eversince.   23. Hi all just found the site and I am suitably impressed I was born in the first half of the last century ( 1947 ) lived on Grainger St Meadow lane. I attended London Road Infants, Arkwright Junior and Greenwood Secondary 58/62. Then joined the Royal Navy served for 12 years travelled and lived all over the world . Returned to Nottingham in 1974 on posting with new job have lived around the country before retiring now live in North Staffordshire. Reading earlier posts brought back lots of memories of The Meadows, Sneinton, Colwick Road etc I would love to share those memories.
