  1. Can anyone help with the identity of a large shop in the city centre back in the 50s that had 2 or 3 big inwarding curving windows along the footpath? You could not touch the windows (as a kid) and it had wooden rails along the front. Large tiled foyer before actual entrance and from memory, it was a bit of a posh shop that sold clothes or manchester and was up or down from the Odeon?
  2. Off topic just this once but times have changed, trevorthegasman. RoT Infant School almost a mile from home in Cliffe Drive and I used to walk to school, back home for lunch, back to school and then home again (almost forgot Sunday School). If I was lucky, I got a drive with Anne Jepson and her Dad to school or, rode a horse home if Barbara Hall was leading a horse back from the blacksmith in the village as she lived across the road from us at the Riding school/farm. Was allowed to ride my bike to school when I was 8-9 years old and thought that was just great! Even better when we move
  3. Remember wearing a small tablet of Camphor in a little cloth pouch hung around the neck on a cloth loop? My mother used to cut and stitch the pouch for the tablet and it was supposed to relieve coughs and colds. Also remember my mum ironing my dad's back with brown paper and a warm iron to relieve his aches. Now realise that Grandma on my mother's side was responsible for many potions and remedies back in those days. Later years, hunched over a bowl of boiling water with a dollop of Vicks Vapor Rub in it and a towel over your head so that you would breathe the steam. Still use the Vic
  4. Does anyone remember getting dosed with a tablespoon of Brimstone and Treacle when they were kids? I enjoyed the taste but could never remember what it was for.... maybe to ward of the winter colds, evil spirits or the worms!
  5. Just a bit of subsidence lad...nowt to worry sen about.
  6. Ayupmeducks...........Sovereign Hill perhaps??
  7. Bus tickets, especially the last post, reminds me as a naive schoolboy of always adding up the serial numbers of your ticket and if it was 21, you gave it to your girlfriend to indicate true love! If you didn't have a girl, you gave it to a mate who did. Oh to go back to those days and know what I know now.
  8. Ref No: PTPD100039 Town Village: Bakewell Location: Avenel Court off King Street Title: Avenel Court off King Street, Bakewell, 1973 Picture courtesy of PTP but still no date. Must be 18th (maybe 17th) century.
  9. The cinema on the Wes Bridgeford side of Trent Bridge was definitely called the Plaza. Passed it every day for several years between RoT and Arnold High School. Even back then in late 50s, it was half demolished but the front entrance doors and surrounds still stood, complete with concertina steel gates across the entrance to what would have presumably the foyer etc. Remember the colour as blue and white and the space between the steel gates and the entrance doors weas full of rubbish. Funny how they left the entrance way standing for so long. Next door to the site was a driving school and nex
  10. Humber Snipe circa mid 40s onwards????
  11. Whisper then but please don't leave the rest of us in suspense. Just as bad as reading a good book and finding the last pages ripped out.
  12. Thanks Stephen Ford. It was the F5 then. Dropped off in Bramcote Lane and walked home to Mapledene Crescent. Still angry with my parents for ever leaving RoT!
  13. Used to catch the RoT bus at the top end of row 3 or 4 and straight upstairs to get the front seat. Remember those advertising signs on the walls behind the far #2 sign because one had something to do with Jesse Owen in the same advert for some time. My father told me one day when we were on the bus that it was Jesse Owen who upset Hitler at the Olympics before the War. Always thought this bus station was magical at night when covered in snow. Had plenty of time to look out from the top deck whilst the drivers and connies enjoyed their cups of tea etc in their cafe across the road.
  14. Memories.............Fifteen years old and arranged to meet girl from school (Anne) at the bottom of those very steps on our first and last date. Went to that Cinema and afterwards hot dogs at the barrow that used to be on the footpath nearby. Then home...can't remember whether I walked her to her bus or not. Very awkward days of youth. You live and learn!!!
  15. Greetings Stephen Ford, Please Sir, which one went out to Wollaton? It left from Mount Street in the bus lane nearest the camera posted by Cliff Ton on the 24th. It was an F something from memory and the bus colours may have been blue or green.

  23. Nobody has to convince me that animals know what is going to happen to them. Had a German Shepherd from a pup and after 12 years he got cancer and could barely move in the end. Vet came to the house to put him down as a special favour to us. He gave us sleeping tablets for the dog as the wife did not want the dog awake when the vet came to give him the injection. The dog refused all attempts to give him the tablets and we agreed that we would not force them down his throat. So, we spent the time before the appointed visit sitting with him on the lounge room floor. The vet arrived an
