  1. Hello Dat47, Thanks for your reply. That sounds really interesting, can you PM me on this, or alternatively I can PM you? Smiffy
  2. Try this, either when you are just dropping off to sleep, or alternatively when you are just starting to wake up. Imagine a place, a house or favourite spot from the past. For instance if it's a house you lived in long ago "walk" through the door. Walk around inside and try to remember what it was like. After a while you will suddenly picture the little details you had forgotten about. A very clear image will appear and you will get a feeling of being there. Odd but interesting..... Smiffy
  3. I have not visited the castle for years, this may prompt me to do that in the future. I think there was a small scene filmed at the castle in "Saturday Night & Sunday Morning" Can you still go down Mortimer's Hole? Smiffy
  4. Hicklings of Radford. This is what I have found out so far and it is a bit of a mystery:- My grandfather was christened John Henry Hoskins Hickling and he was born in 1900. His fathers name was George Hoskins and I think he lived at 33 Forest St (or perhaps Forester?) Radford, Nottingham. George Hoskins appears to have married (c1879) an Elizabeth Pidgeon (born Chard Somerset c1862). Elizabeth's father perhaps moved up to Nottingham from Somerset in search of work? They do not appear to have had any children. In the meantime a Fanny Hickling appears to have become their Housekeeper. My
  5. We were all at my grandmothers house, it had been raining all morning. Boredom had set in, we had all played non stop ping pong on the dining room table throughout the previous evening, so my grandmother had banned it for two weeks. The table was now full of board games, ludo, snakes & ladders, monopoly etc etc. Little squabbles had broken out so a plan was put in place to brave the elements. Looking through the evening post(and to give her some peace) my grandmother suggested a trip to the pictures ! Wow ! What's on said all ! She ran through a list of films showing at the various
  6. Thanks for all of this ! I have gathered a little more information since my initial post on this topic. Hopefully, once I have got this all sorted I will put another post together in the next few days. Smiffy
  7. A Blog about railways in and around Grantham. Did you visit Grantham Station in the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's or later? I am in the process of putting together a selection of experiences from people who visited the station and the general area to watch the trains go by. If you have a particular memory or story to tell, or still have any trainspotting notes, I would love to include them in my blog:- www.returntograntham.wordpress.com The blog is essentially about all things "Grantham & Railways" so, if after visiting the site and looking at some of the other pages you think you can help m
  8. Hi Kieran, looks as if you have tried British Genealogy Forum during 2010? But no answers?? On 192.com people search there are a few Adrian Croft's living in Nottingham NG6 & NG16 although you have to pay a small amount to view full details etc. Like others have said on here, you need to provide a little more information. Smiffy
  9. I admire you all. Smiffy
  10. He was quite a nice chap if you knew him. Smiffy
  11. No one got close..... Would that be Grenville Norris by chance? Smiffy
  12. People often discuss blood pressure, some suffer from high BP, others low BP. The other day some friends stopped by for a chat and a drink (tea!) and the subject of BP came up. One of the party said they suffered from high BP and they had just been supplied with a BP monitor from their GP to record it over a week or so. We all asked the question, what is high BP? At this point the high BP sufferer went to their car and brought in the monitor (as you do). We all in turn "had a ago" on it with various results. My own result showed a BP of 111 over 77 with pulse at 101. My resting pulse has
  13. PS to #5 I have been away for a while and have just realised lots of others have joined recently, so welcome to them too ! You are in good company. Smiffy
  14. Welcome Dillb, you will like this place. I no longer live in Nottingham, but like many on here I pay a virtual visit every now and then. Absence does make the heart grow fonder. Smiffy
  15. Door painting (and windows).... I had forgotten about that. The painters would turn up and cadge tea & biscuits. A pastime for myself and pals, literally watching the paint dry. We were not allowed in the back garden for a few days after the had been painted in case we touched it. Another pastime, everyone crowding around to watch tarmac being put down on the road. Lovely smell, but I once got too close and fell in it ! I remember being rubbed all over with butter to get it off ! Must have cost a fortune.... Smiffy
  16. Thanks ! South Notts & Barton's too !
  17. Yes Cliff Ton, that's it ! Not only buses, lampposts, rubbish bins, park gates, grass cutting equipment etc etc. Also "Park Keepers" (they were not painted green though) when did they disappear? I like the NCT badge on the buses, have you any of the 40 or 47 service? Smiffy
  18. Thinking back to the olden prehistoric days, when I was much much younger, only a mere slip of a lad. Growing up in Nottingham and being out and about with your parents, "things" seemed to be painted "Corporation Green" Does anyone remember when this disappeared? Perhaps there are still a few examples in hidden corners of the city, anyone found one? Smiffy
  19. Very eerie Melissa ! Does he look round or speak to you? When do you wake up, is it always at the same point? Yes, it is a fairly pleasant dream, but at the same time there is a sort of sad feeling about it that I can't pin down. I always know when I am back in it and I do actually think to myself (in the dream that is - I suppose dreaming is a kind of thinking) oh, it's only that dream again. I feel safe and have a comforting sense of belonging, but the sadness I think is linked to a feeling of searching for something, or someone. In the dream I am not aware of or even think about anyone
  20. Every now and then, perhaps twice a year, I have a dream in which I am walking through Nottingham. Nothing unusual about that I suppose, especially if it is the place you were born, but wait a minute... In this dream it is always one of those summer evenings, you know, long shadows and sunlit red brick buildings. The shops are shut, so it's either a Sunday or after closing time, not many people about. The year seems to be late 1950's or early 60's, I don't know really but it feels like that, certainly before a lot of the big destructive changes. Anyway, the other thing is when I have this
  21. First impressions..... I think from a purely visual point of view our first impression of someone (sometimes something) goes back to our childhood. Sinister looking people like witches, goblins and giants or handsome princes or beautiful princesses etc in fairy stories give us an early impression of good and bad. I also found at an early age that particular actors in films depicted as goodies or baddies left a mark with me. EG:- Christopher Lee always played evil characters, whereas Doris Day seemed kind and homely. Anyone who resembled anyone I had seen in a 50's or 60's film was put into
  22. Understand fully the need for ID etc. Also fully understand the need, in larger condensed postal areas, to protect people from bogus redirections and all the spin off scams associated with this. I suppose I am fortunate to live in a small rural community where everyone knows everyone else. My point is that the local post office and postman in this small community all know everyone in the district including my Daughter. We were able to provide the relevant ID at the post office to get our mail redirected with no problem. We moved 1 mile away from the old address. This house is now empty. H
  23. A fair interpretation, but it does not excuse his attitude, time for change maybe or get left behind? During a recent change of address we had to go through all of the usual redirection of mail paperwork at quite a cost. Our Daughter is registered at our old address and she is travelling in Australia at the moment until November. At the post office we were told that we could not change her details as we did not have the right identifying documentation with us. We receive letters etc sent to her, contact her and then email / text / Skype to ask her if she wants us to open them. This we do
  24. I visited a royal mail processing plant and saw how it all works. That's a good explanation, but sadly it does not explain my original post?? Oh ! hold on ! I've got it now, they are phasing in robots to collect mail and I came across an inflexible prototype out on a field test.......
  25. I'm not usually one to get annoyed by the growing number of silly rules and regulations that crowd our little island. Today however I could not resist sharing this moment. Hurrying to get an important letter in the post, I parked in the allocated space at the post office. I dashed over to the post box outside, as the collection van was parked near it, the driver was inside sorting something. Not too late? said I. No, said the driver, I've not collected yet. Well, can I give you this letter? I said. No... you have to post it in the box over there, he said. I went over to the box and was a
