Things have certainly changed in my life for the better over the years as I was born in 1945..........We had an outside toilet with cut up newspaper, no bathroom, the tin bath outside the back door, bathed once a week, had to wash nightly in the kitchen.......No central heating, or electric blankets, frost and steamed up sash cord windows......Washing drying on clothes horses in wet weather........No car, no fridge, no dryer.......A big English electric telly, black and white with 2 channels.........No telephone, always queues at the phone box..........No supermarkets, the same old meals......

The smell of cigars at Christmas............The men in my family only ever smoked cigars then......still reminds me of christmas when I smell one........Also the smell of boiled cabbage in carbonated soda when I entered the kitchen, yuk............the smell of discinfectant when you passed the pubs on the way to school in the mornings from the cleaners scrubbing the steps............The smell of school dinners being delivered.........Sugar beet in the fields when we visited my grandparent's who lived in the Country, yuk, always made me feel sick............smoke from the trains, we had railway

  4. Commo - The Jesse Robinson's I meant was the Wholesale Fish Market at Sneinton..........The shop on Arkwright Street belonged to them............It was in the 1950's onwards that my Aunty Grace's huband's father who managed it with his 3 sons.......Their name was Beavan...............

Both my brother and my sister had their wedding receptions at he Station Hotel in the 1960's............Didn't go in many Hucknall pubs myself, was always in Nottingham dancing, partying and at nightclubs, 99 Club was my favourite...........I did enjoy the Hucknall Welfare and the Social Clubs though.....
  6. Yes I knew there was a 41..........I used to catch it to work each day at Cinderhill Isalnd........got a bit mixed up......where did the 45 run too ?

I chose it because I have always been a natural blonde and I was called Blondie at school.............I am 69 now and still blonde, runs in my family..................My hubby went to Crane School in the 1950's and was called Titch................ I once knew a bloke called Fred from Basford, he lived on Egypt Road, we had a shop on Nottingham Road, we bought it from Gordon Ingham who was there for years before us.............

I knew a Pat Brindley from Melford/Melbury Road, she was one of six children.........We worked together at Healey & smith Solicitors on Derby Road Nottm in the late 1960's.......We lost touch when we got married, my name is Lynn and I married a butcher named Malc from Cinderhill................I also knew Christine and Lorraine Sharp from Glaisdale Drive...........Christine married my hubby's friend Rob and they emigrated to New Zealand in 1983...........

I was thrown out of there one Sunday evening, maybe it was your aunt and uncle, it was around 1967..........I was courting a fella called Joe, we went for a Sunday evening walk and called there for a drink......we were laughing, joking and kissing, the landlord told us off, I was wearing a mini skirt and was told to cover up my knees as it was supposed to be off putting to the customers.........We were then told to leave...........Was always a nice pub in a lovelly village.......

Yes Malc can remember him too, he is sorry to hear that he has died............Only seems like yesterday when he was nipping around delivering meat, when I first married him in 1970, the phone rang and rang all the time, people ordering meat.........It all changed when Kwiksave was built up the slip road in Nuthall.......

I remember Mount Street bus station very well......Caught the Trent buses number 60 and 61 which went from Nottingham to Mansfield, Sutton, Kirkby and 60a 60b to Hucknall where I lived...........that was back in the 50's and 60s...........bought a return ticket, the bus conductors were always very friendly......
  12. Yes......... My hubby Malc is sitting here and he can remember you, he remembers all the old customers and loved them all.....They had a huge delivery round back then and they worked so hard.......Malc is 70 years old now and actually he hasn't changed much, just greyer...........He is still working, he is with Pete Sheffield, they used to have a butcher's shop on Nuthall Road opposite the pub called the Newcastle Arms, they were called Bert Sheffield & sons, can you remember them ?..........Mick Pinkett from the Newsagent's on Bells Lane, next door to us, is working with them as well.....

Yes the Station Hotel is still there, I went to a funeral wake there not long ago................It has all changed, all the rooms are now one big room, there was an old photograph framed on the wall with children playing skipping outside and I am one of them, made me feel all nostalgic - I lived on Station Terrace in the 1950's, my name was Lynn and I lived at number 3.................I can remember Fisher's and Smith's being the owners in the 1950's and then a lovelly guy called Hector taking over in the 1960's, was one of the best pubs in Hucknall, did lots of weddings and functions.....

My Aunty Grace married in 1956 and lived in a flat on Arkwright Street......It was over the top of Jessie Robinson's Fish shop, next to a Butcher's shop on the corner of St Saviour's Street, she got the flat because her hubby worked for Jesse Robinson's on Sneinton Market......They lived there until 1962, they were then sent to live in Clifton...................I can remember walking down Arkwright Street to Trent Bridge, going around all the back streets, with my young cousins, Arkwright Street was a very busy shopping area.........catching the trolley buses into the city, number 43 to Bulwel

I attended that Textile School on Bath Street in Nottingham from1958-61 when it closed down.........Miss Noris was the headmistress and there was Mr Kerry, Mr Deardan, Mr Rogers, Mr Rippon, Mr Bamber.........Miss Bostock, Miss Wenn, Miss Maud (yuk), Mrs Tillinghurst, Miss Winfield, Mrs Turner and the music teacher Mrs Jackson............I hated every minute of that place, it was a waste of three years of my life.......What a con........I was clever at the Junior School, but failed my 11 plus, nobody could understand why - I attended the Seniors for a year then took an exam to be sent to a Tech

I came for Hucknall (mucky ukna) - I was born at Westville in September 1945, near the aerodrome and was bought up on Station Terrace........a few doors away from the Station Hotel pub, played on the street, the Rec and Titchfield Park, roller skated on the Market Square, went to the baths, the Scala and Byron Cinemas, the fair came twice a year on the Rec, there were dances everywhere at all the Social Clubs, we had a great time growing up there......My dad worked at Linby pit until the shaft caved in around1953/54 when he was badly injured, he had lighter jobs still at the Coal Board, Huckna

The Broxtowe Lane shops started at the top of Broxtowe Lane called the Top shops, went down past the Cocked Hat to the Co-op and the wool shop, Hardware shop, cake shop etc......then when it joined Bells Lane at the island there were 4 shops at the bottom of Bells Lane.........Pinkets, then Deatons Newsagents, Joe Taylor& Son Butcher's, A Greengrocer and then the Fish and chip shop.................The Butcher's shop belonged to my husband and his father, I married Malcolm in 1970 and went to live behind the shop, was there for 16 years............
