  1. Good morning Phil, Just wondering how your hip has turned out and that you are back into full action? I mentioned some time ago about the trout lakes at Thurgaton. Apparently they are fishing very well but I have as yet not visited them. Hopefully you might join me there one day when things get more normal? Look up DCAC for details. I can take you as a guest. Cheers Terry

I've got a reel of Grey's Platinum Stealth WF7 translucent intermediate to go with my Grey's 7/8 9'6" rod. I like Oban but not the single malt from the seafront distillery. Very harsh. I much prefer a Jura from the nearby island. We always rent a cottage at Craobh Haven, just down the coast from Oban, which is handy for both sea and loch fishing. There's a good pub/restaurant, the Lord of the Isles, in the marina there and we buy fresh crab and lobster from the quayside shop in Oban.

My hip’s fine thanks. I’m a bit rusty on casting. I’ve still got to joint a new line to the backing on my reel as the last one got tangled round the prop of the boat on Loch Awe. There are no fish in there by the way!

  3. Ey-up, young Philip, suddenly lost all contact with you and Viv - for some unforseen reason - a couple of years ago?

Would dearly like to pick-up the pieces where we left off ...

Trusting all is well (and still locked-down)?

Still locked down and enjoying it Mike. Everything comes by van and I barely have to associate with humankind. Perhaps next year when things revert to normality we may meet again! :)

  4. I have been trying find one Phil but as yet unsuccessful.

This is bugging me now. I remember the person who took me and my wife for lunch (our financial advisor), his office, which was in Westminster Buildings in Theatre Square and the approximate year, 1997. Like you I’ve searched for pictures and info. but can find nothing. Maybe all will be revealed in a dream!

  5. HI Phil, one of your posts that has intrigued me for sometime is the one in which you refer to the Barry Fisher Incident. Can you recall what year this was, what was written and was the boy expelled?

Yes, got that. I knew Dawkins and Reddish as they were in the same form. Not seen them since 1961.

I would think about 58 to 60. He wrote a long derogatory piece about ‘Pig’ Hutchinson, the geography master, and pinned it up on the notice board in the 5th form corridor. He was expelled. Barry was a good lad. I used to run with him in the senior cross country team. What he wrote was probably true but he must have been seriously upset by something to make his feelings so public.

  7. Good Morning Phil, I do not recall your name so maybe I was in the year below you.My birthday is in December so I would not have been 11+ until 1955 so would have taken the exam that year I assume. Some names I remember from my year are David Randall Norman Swallow Billy Thomlinson  all from Hucknall Mick Chambers Jack Chambers and Chris Draper from other areas of Nottinghamshire . I like you enjoyed my time at the Mellish and am grateful for the start it gave me to the rest of my life.

Yes Geoff, it looks like you were in the year below me. Some names I remember from Hucknall were Mike Carson, Richard Bullock, Keith Dawkins, Brent Reddish, Allan Bell (father ran Terminus Garage). Ring any bells?

      Phil
