  1. Could this be the man? Service commenced 1906
  2. Found a Mary Harvey in 1891 census showing as born in Shelford, a stones throw from Flintham. No Ernest though. A George age 4 and Herbert age 2. Worth a good look at this one if you've not done already.
  3. Pianoman I don't think it is your Mary in the workhouse. In both the 1911 and the 1901 census there is your Mary born in Flintham and another Mary Harvey born in Bulwell which is more than likely the one in the workhouse. Was Harvey her nee name? One of my grandfathers was born in a workhouse and carried his mothers' name until she married a few years later.
  4. Dave 48 I was told recently, well in the last year or so, that the woman who used to serve when we were kids was still putting in an appearance now and then. She's got to be 90 at least. I keep promising to stop and go and have a look, as Broxtowelad says bundles of firewood wrapped with wire and later used as a handle for my 'winter warmer' also the smell of the Aladdin Pink paraffin. Terence when you lived at 6 Shipley your back garden would have overlooked ours at 6 Lindfield, what year was it?
  5. Dave talking of short cuts, as you know we used to live almost equidistant from the Bradfield Road shops and the Coleby Road ones meaning that the Cocked Hat shops were the furthest point away. So as a kid I used to go down the entry at the bottom of our garden climb the fence separating us from the back gardens on Withern Road down their entry (probably yours) onto Withern then cross the road to Bidford down a couple more entries and fences and I was on Broxtowe Lane. Do you remember the farmhouse and a stream on what is now Yatesbury Crescent and the field which lead to Chingford Road? I
  6. Ernie #64 I get out about once a month for a meet up with Ken and John from our Player infant/junior school days and a few more from teen years. Terence #67 was 21 Frinton Shipley Road end or Bradfield? I remember the library and toilets and opposite was waste land. The sports field was often used for City Sports events I used to do long jump, high jump and 100 yards sprint (ish). The high jump technique in those days was the straddle, they were encouraging us to try the Western Roll. Can't remember too much about it but I think we were jumping somewhere just short of 4.5ft and landing in
  7. Born in Nottingham, parents born Nottingham, grandparents Nottingham. We arrived en masse from Heanor and populated New Basford. At one point in time the families lived on Chelsea Street, Rye Street, Palm Street, Wycliffe Street, Mount Street and Northgate and nearly all working in the lace industry. Paternal ancestors Carleton Rode Norfolk 1789 Heanor Derbyshire 1794 Maternal ancestors Winterton Lincs 1833 Hambleden Bucks 1839 Beyond that I am advised
  8. #60 Ernie A few of us knew he was Geoff Ball's dog. I was out last night with Ken Hemsley (Woodfield Road) who was in our class and John Bird (Bradfield) Do you remember them?
  9. Hi Ernie, #57 Yes that's him, don't know if you could use his name today though. #58 I'm not on that pic as I was at People's college in 1958 but I was on the class photo the year before sitting about where you are on this. You were at the other end near the teacher Geoff Bond on the year before pic.
  10. Ernie F I think I recognise the bike. Does a black dog feature in your childhood? If so we were in the same class at Player school. Broxtowelad I had a 'Tony Curtis' at Charlies, not sure who did the deed. Mam said "Who the bloody hell cut that?"
  11. Benjamin, I can do the works I'm skilled. How about Chococino with mini marshmallows? Not for me but the grandkids have put their order in.
  12. Nothing exciting there Fly, just some coffee 'pods' I am awaiting a 'Spiralizer' though, given free by Mail newspaper. I'm not sure what use it is going to be but it's a gadget so I'm in. I've also read that it's a good idea to your count fingers before and after the process.
  13. It's Yodel day today, 3 separate deliveries in the space of 3 hours. Must be an opportunity there for some logistics man. Parcel 1 Coffee maker --- Check for water - stick a "pod" of your choice in - press a lever down -push a button - move another lever and voila! A perfect hot creamy coffee in a nice sized glass mug, not in a vessel the size and weight of a 'guzunder'. You want Latte? I can do latte, you want Cappuccino? I can do Cappuccino. I'm now a Barista! Parcel 2 Virgin Super Hub --- Check all parts are present - unplug and discard old router - connect new router (2 cables) - mak
  14. Lizzie Did you hear PR mention something about the Rolling Stones at a Party in Beeston. Could it be that someone else we know is going to get a mention?
  15. I have Family Tree Maker program which holds all of my tree records and I don't need to be online to have a nose around it. It is owned by Ancestry, any changes made to either are synched to all devices which I find very useful. I prefer FTM as I find that it is much cleaner and less cumbersome than Ancestry. Unfortunately Ancestry has decided to retire FTM and will discontinue all support at the end of 2016. Anyone know of a good program which does both jobs?
  16. Lizzie #93 Ferrari and Lambo apparently have an optional extra, front suspension lifting system. Necessary as their drive until recently resembled Land Rover's proving ground and used to trouble me enough in my VW Polo.
  17. #86 My 90 year old Mother-in Law just returning from fetching her Sanatogen in HE11 YEH.
  18. TRD #84 - Yep was on his Ferrari now transferred to his orange Lamborghini Huracan. He's either loving life or still rebelling in his mid forties.
  19. Son-in-law has reg.no. HE11 YEH
  20. Thanks to everyone who commented on this topic. Like I said I didn't really get into cricket but I've picked up on so many terms and now have a bit of an understanding. The knowledge of the players in the NSW team is helpful in filling in some more detail in my family tree. Just one last request in the article #43 The last sentence - in his veteran years he was said to have two types of wrong-un mixed in with his leg-breaks. I like it, sounds typically Oz but any ideas as to what it was likely to mean?
  21. Bubblewrap #59 1930 team both players you mentioned are in there.
  22. #3294 Michael we had one similar to that but before then we had a Servis washtub with an electric mangle and an AGITATOR anyone remember them? From memory I think it was a green speckled paint job.
  23. Played all sports but never got into cricket. I have a cousin Hugh Cecil Chilvers in my family tree who from 1929-30 to 1936-37 played in the same team as a certain Mr. D.G.Bradman. Apparently a useful bowler. I share his D.N.A but unfortunately not his cricket prowess.
