  1. Yes I know what you meanLizzie Your husband probably wouldnt know what to do with himself like Alex.Hes extremely tired but cant retire yet as the assistant chef is leaving to live with her boyfriend in Turin. Hes got an assistant apprentice but unlike the girl he cant be left on his own.A fully qualified chef of Alexs standard and reputation is proving very difficult to find. Alex has worked since he was 11 going out in the fishing boats with his uncle and being the eldest of 7 with a younger brother in hospital with tyfoid ( no national health in Italy) he had to work . He has only ever had
  2. Went for another xray on my back this morning and one on my toe which I thought I'd broken. My scogliosis has changed slightly for the worse. L 1 to L5 , S1 are all damaged L3 is the one thats giving me the most pain because theres no cartilage. Seen the osteopath this afternoon , she manipulated my neck which was rigid and my spine .I felt so free when I went to fetch my car. I try to do my exercises twice a day as it does help. It will never ever be repaired but it can be controlled. I have bought a special chair that I'm trying to get used too. It's a Varier Balans Gravity. O I can eith
  3. Lovely post Lizzie bet it took you back in time a bit listening to your aunt and imagining the things they did.
  4. Compo Our dog Misty did that when she was younger but the tray had the nappy pads in not litter. She often gets into bed with the two chihuahuas.
  5. Phil not really local but tripe is sometimes on the menu at Deborahs restaurant. Alexs mum used to cook it with tomatoes, potatoes etc and Alex tried his best to tempt me . It looked ok but knowing what it was put me off. Deborah was the same as me but she had so many requests for it in her restaurant she had to cook it. After a while one afternoon when she was at home she said she' served so many dishes of tripe. She decided to try it and she loved it . But I still won,'t try it. I cant stand the smell. If anyone wants the recipe I 'll find out for you or you can PM me.
  6. Loppy hope the storm blows itself out and doesnt reach you. We too are experiencing high temperatures . It started to get cooler and after high temps and higher humidy it was a relief but it didnt last long, the heat has returned with a vengeance with even greater humidity and temps around 32 c. Slightly cooler than before. Before long we are going to experience some bad weather so they are warning us. We'll see. Good luck anyway.
  7. Gem a number of years ago we lost a neice of 8 yrs old in a car accident. My husband never remembers any dates or names. But one morning he recounted a dream that he'd had. Ingrid came to him in this dream and told him to tell uncle Fernando to stop disturbing her. A conversation followed where Ingrid described where she was and said that she was happy. My husband has never dreamt of any defunct family members and he couldnt understand why he had dreamt of her , when I realised it was the anniversary of her death. Strange yes but it leaves you wondering. As i said before my husband never dream
  8. Making hay bails , Yes I'm all for it. Providing theres fine weather but Ian don't lower yourself in being sarcastic it doesnt go with your image.
  9. This morning it was a pleasure to read a lot of comments ( just like the " old "days) But theres a lot of members missing. I enjoyed reading to see what others were doing even if I wasn't interested but it was nice to read of those who I met in January. But I feel that something has changed. I know we're supposed to be reminiscing about Nottingham and quite rightly too but we have become a social outlet too and I for one feel I know a lot of you not even having met you. I feel now that the group has become a photo albumn and although I have enjoyed the photos they are dominating the site. I m
  10. Ben No matter how you feel now it can only get better. Youve just had surgery so expect a bit of discomfort but you'll feel great before long and you be able to get back into the swing of things ( and make up for what you've missed .) Glad anyway that you're home so recovery will be double quick. Keep well we are all rooting for you.
  11. Yes we too are preparing for the forthcoming winter. The plumbers are here serviceing the stoves and boilers etc. They're struggling at the moment as my son has no water. Its had low pressure all summer, at first we thought it was because of saving water etc but opposite us up on the hill they have been working, 1. A house was demolished and 2. A pool was being constructed. The dirt that came through our taps was disgusting and took a long time to clear. Now We've rung the water authorities and they say it may be the filter thats blocked coming from outside. They should be here this week Anoth
  12. Feeling a bit sorry for myself. My back has started playing up again. Was doing well after 3 sessions with osteopath but made a sudden turn and now back to square one. Will see how it goes Monday.
  13. I remember this when it happened and shocked to think it had happened in Nottingham. Well done AG really interesting reading . My neck is aching from looking down but couldn't stop reading.
  14. My husband promised to stop smoking on our wedding day. Waiting for a connection on a railway station he went to the "loo" on returning he had his hand behind his back . What came from the region of the back of his head looked suspiciously like smoke. Good beginning! However he did make another promise that when he knew he was going to be a grand dad he would stop. That day came and the remaining cigarettes in the pack got thrown away and hes never smoked since making it 15 yrs. He never smoked in the house though but he has a habit of when passing me he touches my cheek , whe
  15. Ian forgot to add this but Richard Rose leased the restaurant to us. we refurbished it in 94 . We came back to Nottingham in May 1994 and by Christmas we were open and delighted to find a load of old customers had followed Alex over the years
  16. Yes Ian L'Angolo was Roses garage. We later sold it to Ashmores ( 2 brothers and wives) we had decided to return to Italy and James my son was due for national service so a bit of a predicament. Things with moving werent quick and in the mean time an Italian friend of ours who lived in Radcliffe told us they were trying to find caterers at the golf club as those they had had left . We thought it would help to pass a little time in case things were still going slow with moving. We got the job and enjoyed it but it was hard work. A lot of our customers were golfers and they were pleased that we
  17. I dont know what happenrd to him Ian as far as I know he went came back to Italy.
  18. Yes Phil thats right. La Buca Jonab was opened in 1978 ( or 1976) we were there for many years and in the meantime opened Da Vinci in WB, also Ponte Vecchio on Trent Bridge. Memories a bit blurred so cant give you exact years La Buca used to be The Old Dutch and we got it at a good price as the owners were bankrupt. The place was in a terrible state and in doing a lot of work inside my husband found a big hole behind the bar. Hence the name La Buca. While there he eventually had a waiter who became a partner in Ponte Vecchio. ( ex Bridge Cafe) One of our ex waiters managed it whilst Carlo ( p
  19. Yes Phil , County Sales which did become the Clinton Rooms was a few doors from La Buca. There was a passage way leadingto the back of the restaurant then there was the carpet shop. Saturday nights was always a problem with people using the passage as a loo. But Alex being ever one step ahead solved the problem by fixing some sort of shock (Effective but harmless)once wet. It worked but he was quick to hide the evidence. .
  20. Lizzie yes the flower is very similar not so brightly coloured though
  21. Our neighbours have a banana tree. It produces a weird looking flower and a small bunch of bananas. Non edible. Strange how it grows, its lovely when its fully grown but as autumn and winter approach it dies down to ground level then in spring all these new shoots grow each one a potentional tree. Sorry wrong place but just following the flow.
  22. You never know just a few people might help the bananas ripen.
  23. Cruises have never appealed to me before but after watching a tv programme this afternoon its confirmed my choice. It was a documentary investigation into pollution. I didnt sit down deliberately to watch tv but because I felt tired , a rest was a good idea. What caught my attention was a comment that although pollution was high in the centre of Milan the pollution was so many times higher in the middle of the ocean. Impossible I thought, but think about it. A reporter and someone who deals with pollution ( sorry but some english words escape me ) went on this cruise and continually tested the

    Old Cameras

My dad was into photography and his darkroom was the kitchen. Remember as a brownie coming home all sweaty and thirsty when I spotted a lemonade bottle sitting in the hearth. I took a swig as dad said don't touch it its developing liquid Watching the image appearing in this fluid and then they were hung to dry a bit then put on a curved heated thing which finally dried the photos, I was fascinated and came to appreciate his interest. But when I was even younger I wanted to take a photo and dad told me what to do etc. Then I spoilt it by asking is this the button I press. Needless to say m
