  1. Ben hope you feel good about your decision to quit. sorry to hear about your op though. you'll be fine.
  2. my day s been good ( things that pee you off) sorry I got the wrong topic. This is where we've been today Note the sky it was taken the other night, or rather late afternoon.
  3. Beautiful hot sunny day. My daughter and I set about clearing the mess left from the builder, sand and gravel every where even in the pool. Its finished albeit for the tiling around and someone coming tomorrow to see to the elettrolisi for the salt water that apparently turns it into a form of chloro so after the clean up we deserved a swim , it was sheer heaven. Water comes up to my chin so it cooled me down perfectly. Did 12-14 lengths so it put my back into some sort of comfort. The best part was whilst swimming a swallow swooped down to drink and I could feel its wings on my face. Going o
  4. Although we dont live in the UK and it may be a different point of view. Here over the years employment or the lack of it has been very different to that in UK. My husband has worked since he was 11 yrs old. He was born in Sicily the eldest of 7. . They had a shop but had to sell up as his younger brother developed typhoid and was hospitalised for months. No NH service then. They lost everything so when my husband could he left school at 11 (compulsory until at least that age) and went to work with an uncle on a fishing boat. He later worked the fields with builders and shepherds no
  5. Another storm today, this weather is getting to me. Suffering high temperature during the day , late afternoon high winds and torrential rain, then sunny again. A bit like UK 4 seasons in one day. The pool in itself is finished and we started to fill it. Water pressure very low so ended up pumping water from the well. It only took just over a day to fill. Engineer came this morning to check everything and another one coming tomorrow. Only groutinog needed on border and the rest has to be brought to a level and probably tiled in a while.Anyway after 2 months and a half we can finally have
  6. 32 c here and getting hotter.got into my car the other day and temperature was 38 c. After driving a while it was down to 35. C Until the pool is ready I'm staying in. Its being filled now but still a while to finish. It still looks like a building site. It should take 3-4 days to fill it, hopefully less.
  7. Cant remember you walking out of ours Phil or did I miss something.
  8. Loppy thats happened to me just lately to get locked out. The new door we have cannot be opened from outside without a key so we have to block it if we are out for a few more minutes. I risked it the other day as I sometimes do but this time there was a slight breeze and....click! Fortunately my daughter was in ( her house) so I borrowed her key. It also happened that I thought someone had pinched my car. Market day and I took my grandson ,at the time only 4. I had a few bags to carry plus holding his hand. Went to where I'd parked , no car. Thought I'd got the wrong lane , still no car s
  9. Having to look up words in another language is normal. Today was talking to the men that have installed the new gate, saying how we were going to replace the wall or fence as at the moment everywhere is open. The wall was taken down to allow access to all and sundry who have been working here. The wall has to be replaced but as the posts were damaged they were put under for rubble. The builder said oh they sell them at......... they dont so if we have to replace the whole wall he will have to accept responsibility. As before whilst telling the men about this episode I couldnt for t

    Why?

Have you ever wondered ....why ? Doesnt matter what it is but the question pops up every now and again. It would be nice if someone has the answer. Just now making myself a cup of coffee and looking around the kitchen I have a few electrical appliances with German plugs. Why? Lots of appliances are made in Italy and they still have German plugs. Why? Which means we have to either change the plug to use it ( but not straightaway in case the thing goes wrong and they wont change it) or else use an adapter. Heres another why. Our power points are different ( obviously) we have 2 different si
  12. Not a great reader but bought a couple of books and dvd of a film that was on tv a while ago. I only saw the last bit of it but the last few minutes intrigued me as I heard "Barrow" I was born in Barrow in Furness and saw a lot of bomb damage ( although I was 5 when we left I spent my school holidays with grand parents and the bomb damage was still there) Back to the books, they are called Nella Lasts War and Nella Last's peace. It basically her diaries written every day during and after the war. She began her diary for the Mass Observation started in 1937 by Charles Madge to r
  13. San Remo song festival is the same. Both are so boring with animated gaps which are embarrasing.
  14. Jill thats quite normal, its worse in the cities when if you dont shove when the bus comes you dont get on
  15. Just realised this is an aches and pains page. Sorry but was just following a thread. I have been in agony the last 2 days. My back has flared up again and Im having injections every day. Cant think what I've done apart from washing my car, but it feels likeI'vegot another slipped disc. See how it goes the next few days and go to visit the xrays dept.
  16. Considering Ben's and Phil's comment s on the virtues of a small town Bulwell in comparison to living in the country. There is good and bad in both. I lived close to Bulwell and although never used to visit it regularly I cant say that I "know" it very well so cant vouch what its like living there . We are all different and I for one love living in the country. We live in the middle of grape vines surrounded by other fruit trees and in the evenings we enjoy the sweet smell of lime trees which are in abundance here. Its quiet apart from the summer when there are loads of tractors around and al
  17. Our Dr is on first come first served. He did try to organise a ticket service but found people were going to the surgery early taking a ticket then going to do their shopping or whatever. Returning late and insisting they go first. It only lasted a week. Two days a week hes in surgery morning and evening 5 day week but he does a regular service at the care home my mum is in. There are 3-4 drs in the village
  18. The english abroad, if they don't speak another language do tend to speak in a raised voice. I cant think why but they do. The Italians are naturally loud, probably because they all talk at the same time. We arent in a particularly tourist area although during the year we do have a lot of tourists. They come for the wine and all the festivities connected with wine. Most will attempt to speak in Italian even badly but I think its nice they try. I think mostly they are perhaps afraid of getting it wrong with a foreign language and everyone laughing at them. This happened to me nearly 50 y
  19. I can vouch for that Jonab. My neice gave me a jar of it along with a square of lavender soap. The honey is nearly all gone. I'm not that fond of honey but this is delicious, light in colour and in taste. We find these flavoured honeys in country produce fayres. Our local one is chestnut honey and its too strong for me. Went to Drs this morning as I was worried about the wasp sting. Its so swollen and still burns and itches a bit. I know it wont get better in a few days but it was so swollen that my shoe got too tight and was leaving a mark. However hes given me some antibiotics as he thi
  20. Thanks for the info. Mosquito bites are no problem for me . Lavender oil and aloe vera gel every time I get bitten in the summer which is often as its very humid here. Dont fancy the hot spoon though. We too have hornet s but get out of the way double quick if I see one. We have an orchard at the back of the house but now dont go there. Snakes wasps bees and hornets can merrily play without me there. I only had balsamic vinegar and I never gave lemon juice a thought. Ankle swelling beautifully now.
  21. Not very cheerful this morning I'm afraid. Been awake most of the night and finally got up at 6 am. Last week I was stung by a wasp. I was sweeping outside and it made a beeline for me. I thought there was a nest nearby so I quickly got out of the way. Put some aloe vera gel and lavender oil on and the pain went straightaway. ( gotya you bugger you cant harm me) huh a couple of days later the pain came back with a swelling so bad that I had never realised that a sting could be so potent. This was on my wrist and the swelling circled my arm. The other day in exactly the same area outside
