  1. Nah ! I used get them elsewhere when I were at primary school.
  2. Mary, I've never seen a paper carrier bag with a straing handle ?
  3. I used to like Palm toffee splits. They also did one that was a chocolate split, same price. Didn't they do the little trays of toffee that came with a little hammer. Then there was Barley twist sugar sticks or Butterscotch twist with chocolate through the middle. Oh, the joys of youth. Just thought of something else I used to buy on the way to school ( when I had any dosh) and that was Domino cigarettes, 4 for 6d. real ones too ! for a crafty drag when at playtime.
  4. StavertonG. Didn't have crisps til' you were 14? That's not long ago then, only a couple of years.
  5. I've been corrected at home chaps. Just to clarify, for our colonial cousins... It's Pom Bears, Aldi is Teddy faces and Tesco is Bunnies. I rest my case your honour. Jill, Potato Puffs are rubbish ! turn to mush in your mouth, as you say, vinegary.
  6. Now we've really opened a keg of worms ! Now we've woken Brew up and got him interested. Any other takers ? At next meet up, I'm going to have, fish and Pom Bears, with mushy peas on the side.
  7. CT, Nibbits were a bit before your time lad. They were a bit like crispy fried noodles that were in Vesta Chow Mein. Now there's another blast from the past.
  8. It says a lot for us Carni, when all we've got to discuss for topic of the day..is the state of crispy snacks !! Pom bears also do a cheesy flavour, but I prefer the original. Of course, then there is Quavers, another delicacy. I'm sure Nibbits had a very slight Marmitey taste, but as stated, that's due to memory. ALL TOGETHER !,"are we sad or what !
  9. It just goes to show, how the memory can decieve. Forgot the cobblers was next door, also a house in between the shops. Wonder what the shop was on the corner of Garden st.? Think there's a brief glimpse of tobacco ad. So it could have been a sweet shop/tobacconist. We were in number 140. ( Think Redfern were rubber heels, but could be wrong with that too). Thanks for the picture though CT.
  10. Save the whales !!! and hug a tree or two.
  11. Watcha Oz., Nice to hear from you, being as your just round the corner. We do have Pom Bears quite regularly, 'Er indoors loves them.. Tesco do their own version called Teddy faces, which are just as good. Aldi have their own brand but can't remember the name. I don't think any of them are like Nibbits, but maybe that's all to do with my memory. Interestingly, Pom bears look like flattened Koalas ! Take care..
  12. I just can't win with you can I? You don't like creamed mushrooms and now you don't like President. Next it'll be you don't like Brains faggots or Haggis.
  13. No Jill, it never said Electric. It was just a play on words. The bloke used to have a little van that had the logo on the sides. He used to be involved with the YMCA that was on Grant Street, I used to attend for years. A small group of us kids used to pile in the back of the van and we would go weekend camping to Kingston on Soar or Watstandwell.( After school Friday and back on Sunday). My mate, John Furness used work in the shop after school and Saturdays.
  14. Reckon your right Ian. Remember the Cliff Richard film Espresso Bongo ? That was set in a coffee bar, complete with little glass cups, ( more like eye baths). Coffee not to be confused with Espresso, a single shot of caffeine.
  15. CT., Just had a look on Google maps and the shop I was on about is now a vegetable shop. It's on the corner of Albert grove, off Ilkeston road. On the other corner was another butchers shop. Your picture shows 142-144 Ilkeston road, but I can't ever remember seeing Tric services above their window, but the info did say 1952. I worked at the butcher's from 1954-58, (Thomas Straw tel.77153). Got an apology. The grocers names were Syd and Bill ( not Dick).
  16. Given a choice I would go for President, either salted or unsalted. Lovey on a breakfast roll with a bit of jam. !
  17. Don't forget me Diabetic rock Catfan.
  18. There you go! Got it wrong agen. My little sis conscience has pulled me up once more. Oh the shame, the shame.
  19. Well done Kev. Pulled it out the bag yet again. Just shows how the memory gets fogged. The shop that says Tric services was in actual fact opposite on the other side of Ilkeston rd. It belonged to J.G.Foster known as 'Sandy'. It sold electrical fittings including table lamps, ceiling lights etc. He also did outside electrical work. The shop in your picture was part of the greengrocers double shop, ( that front door wasn't used. To the right of where the ladies are standing was an entry to the back, then it was our shop. The greengrocers was owned and run by a Jewish father and son, who I can o
  20. When I were a butchers lad, back in AD1957 there was a coffee shop on Ilkeston road just up from Garden st. There was a cobblers on the corner then the coffee shop followed by double green grocers, then my butchers. Next was, if memory serves me well, a wool shop/baby clothes, then a pub on the corner of Bloomsgrove st. Used to nip in the coffee shop for tea and toast and listen to a new fangled gadget called a Jukebox ! Anybody remember the little glass cups and "Frothy Coffee". How did they make it?
  21. Just had a look on Maps Ben, Happy Days, Trunch lane , Chapel st. Leonards.
  22. Would that be along Roaman bank then Den ?
  23. I just knew somebody would disagree. They were also lovely with shredded chicken, when making chicken pie.
