  1. Ashley: WSB (Precision Components) was formed at the same time that Nottingham Electronic Valve was voluntarily liquidated. So, it just a case of switching one name for another - everything else remained the same. The Wycliffe Mills site was so filthy the employees had to clean and paint it all. To the rear was a tee-shirt and underwear garment manufacturer. On the floor below was a building supply? business. Re: the video tape recorder - the prototype was developed and built in East Bridgeford.
  2. No, it was purely tea, coffee amd chocolate, and peripheral stuff. We were colleagues, and friends, and I went to his 60th a few months back. I remember when I had first started on Trent, he and Chris Ashley invited me to do a walk for charity from Langley Mill to Market Square in Nottingham, but it turned into a 13 mile run, as Chris didnt want to miss the pub, as the opening hours back then were different. I couldnt walk for about 3 days. Im actually puzzled about what is said about the shop in the article, as the original one on Mansfield Rd closed down last year, I went to its last day
  3. Ashley: I remember the Italian POW camp at the top of Colwick Woods very well. The prisoners were allowed to work during the day and report back to the camp at night. We played all over the site after the war and the huts had gone.
  4. Ashley: It was more like 1965. Some of the employees would go swimming at Carrington Lido at dinnertime, in the "summer". There is news article, dated June 29, 1985, in the Evening Post re: one of the owners of NEV - Norman Rutherford, entitled "Norman and the missed millions" by John Brunton.
  5. Well giz a clue then Ashley. Jet ,Prop, Two engines/ Four engines?? Firbeck, this is the best I can find so far a, although there does seem to be a bit of speculation regarding XH-558 again !!! From the Royalaeroclub web site 19-20CambridgeMarshall's Centenary Moth & Chipmunk Fly-in [PPR] & Display 20 Thats all I have so far
  6. Rob237 It certainly was (On his way from Cosby Leics where they did a re enactment of the Blackbuck raid (In which he was the pilot) http://news.bbc.co.u...ire/8240485.stm Ashley , possibly the Lancaster on her way back to Coningsby . Pete leave it with me , I'll see what I can find out (I know a bloke who works near there) Thanks for the comments folks
  7. Your dad's stories sound awsome Ashley and Limey, the desert campaign and the subsequent drag through Sicily and Italy were appalling with many cock ups on behalf of the High Command, were they at Anzio, how much do you know. I'm lucky enough to have my old mans war diaries from 1940 onwards, though they understandably get a bit haphazard during the nasty bits following D-Day, though his descriptions of them crossing the Rhine are quite fantastic, being strafed by Luftwaffe Me262 jet fighters at the time is an incredible thing to read about. I had agreed with him to get his experiences all w
  8. That was pretty much my Dad's experience too - ne was draughted in 1940 and was sent to Egypt. He caught malaria and was sent to Palestine to recover, then back to north Africa and then following the Americans up into Italy which I believe was a pretty miserable experience. On one of the few occasions that he talked about the war, he told me that when they arrived in Italy there were dead Americans stacked at the side of the roads like logs! Sadly, Stanley Marshall, my dad, died in 1997 at age 82. I suspect your dad may have known him Ashley.
  9. Chamberlain never did see the day, he was diagnosed with bowel and stomach cancer and had to retire from Government, eventually dying in November 1940. By special permission of Churchill and the King he was always sent the PM's papers up to his death, in order that he could keep up with the war situation, at least he lived long enough to see the Luftwaffe defeated in the Battle of Britain and the immediate invasion threat removed. Ashley, a great photo, have any more of you got some gems like this hidden away. On this day, 70 years ago, my old man decided to enlist, pre-conscription. He play
  10. Were you the one that organised the Pink Floyd gig at Trent Poly Ashley. All the gear was onstage in the gym, but no band. After a very long wait and much slow handclapping, the band eventually turned up. Roger Waters explained that the promoter had told them to be at the Nottm Uni Portland Building by mistake. He said that the Nottingham Uni people were most impressed when they walked in, but couldn't really play without their instruments. I could imagine an accoustic version of The Dark Side of The Moon taking place in the Buttery Bar, it would have been interesting.
  11. yes "Ashley Promotions" failed miserably on more than one occasion putting bands on late 70's/early 80's! worst was at Regency Rooms Ilkeston when I was sent wrong band! same name but instead of long haired barstewards from hell, it was nice boys in pink suits type of thing! nearly a riot! Another was Paralex at Tiffany's in Nottingham, on both occasions loads there but poor reactions
  12. Satanic Majesties, no way, it was a scrambled together reply to Sgt Pepper and not really very good. You've forgotten Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street, my particular favourites. I managed to see the Stones 3 times, but never saw the Beatles, the length of the qeue outside the Odeon to see them was beyond belief, I gave up. I've not even seen post group individuals, always failed to get tickets for any of their concerts. I did once get to meet Jane Asher when she was engaged to Paul in the early 60's, when she opened the Carnival at Teignmouth in 1964, does that count. Ashley The 'Fa
  13. G'day cobbers, just been walkabout to the old motherland to see me fair dinkum mate Ashley, he suggested I post a pic of me garden
  14. Its obviously OK for you and Ashley to knock people with ability who at least try to improve themselves?
  15. Didn't know owt about this one Ashley, it looks a bit sleaker than a Stanley Steamer. I bet Fred Dibnah would have had a few things to say about this. Incidentally, there's been talk about the new A1 Pacific Tornado, being given clearance to attempt beating Mallard by having a go at the World Steam Locomotive record by flogging it down the new Channel Tunnel line down to Folkestone, I'll believe it when I see it, they seem to have forgotten that the gradients on the line are'nt so forgiving as Stoke Bank.
  16. Ashley Apparently it's called 'Trent Hauling Bridge', quite frankly, it's many years since I wandered that far past the City Ground and I was surprised it still existed, let alone having what appears to be a working lock behind it. Looking on Google Earth, the basin alongside the car park appears to be empty, with moorings at a premium, why is it not used, vandalism from football 'supporters'? Whats the story about the boat from British Waterways, surely they weren't giving it away. Mick Have you thrown in your hand. Is it something to do with one of those jousting tournaments that we ge
  17. Oh dear, I wish I'd never started the thread now, I didn't think it would get a that nasty. I understand that this is in fact a Nottingham memorabilia forum, but there should always be room for topical discussion, sometimes there's hardly any Nottstalgia content running on here, I recall those music title quizes that were running a few months ago, at one point I believe that there were 3 running at once, they had nothing to do with memories of Nottingham, but they were popular, so, why not. Many threads start, then vanish without a conclusion, Ashley's recent photo Quiz, and the Pub pictures
  18. Ashley, it did indeed trick me as the Nottingham Canal was owned by the Great Northern Railway, I have a bridge number and 'Bill Posters' cast iron signs that are both GNR in origin from the canal and of course we have Great Northern Basin in Langley Mill, I assumed it would have been GNR owned all the way up to Cromford, but I gather that it was in joint MR/LNWR ownership from Langley Mill onwards. Very sad that they saw fit to demolish such an historic structure as recently as 1968, it was designed by George Stephenson apparently, but then they were still contemplating closure of the Erewas
  19. Yep, found it Ashley - but I will let it run a while longer.
  20. Thanks Ashley, no doubt that the judge is some establishment, old boy, rugby favouring tosser, possibly enjoyed himself being thrust against the toilet wall by sweaty Etonian bully boys. Simple solution, let every dog in the city crap themselves daft on the pitch before each rugby match, they won't like throwing themselves about and churning up the pitch then, will they, I'm sure Ulrika will be pleased to get her doggy bag out before each subsequent County match.
  21. Ashley Please can you explain what you are talking about, what court case, who are pillocks and why, news travels slowly in darkest Essex, they (Genuinely!!) think that Northampton and Nottingham are the same place down here, no kidding. I quite like the badge, it's more traditional, without a camel or palm tree in sight.
  22. Rob, try:- http://clive-hanley.fotopic.net/p38117904.html Incidentally Ashley, what state was your mate in, or were you more understandably concerned about the bike.
