  1. There are plenty of free as well as paying fire work displays round about Nottingham that night as well as before and after that night too Caz. It's just you spend most of the time while over here in pubs and restaurants quaffing copious amounts of Bulgarian red Meduk. The next time you and hubby are visiting will be a good chance for you to visit Brew house yard to re-live yesteryear. PS, two days ago I stood in my upstairs office looking out of window which looks over parts of the city and there was the biggest firework display happening, where or what was the occasion I haven't the foggi
  2. My dad would make bonfire toffee with black treacle, and peanut brittle with toasted peanuts. This is the only time of year he would make these 2 things.
  3. Penny for the guy. Penny for the guy. Remember, remember. The fifth of November Gunpowder, treason and plot. We used to dress up an old bolster, stick it in a pram and chant the above whilst collecting money for fireworks at the front of the Midland Station. We used to do okay too. Then our Guy Fawkes would go on top of the bonfire. And we would all cheer as he burnt. It's funny to think that as kids we were enacting an historical event going back hundreds of years, which had been passed down from generation to generation. The younger kids took over when the older ones had moved on. Hu
  4. LOL Alison! That's funny. Yes, we had a bonfire in our back garden and dad would let off the fireworks. Bottle rockets, Catherine wheels pinned to the fence. He'd buy me a box of assorted fireworks. I used to do 'penny for the guy' on the corner near the number 22 bus terminus across the road, and catch folks as they got off the bus. That money went on fireworks too.
  5. I forgot about bonfire toffee, my dad made it every Nov 5th, along with peanut brittle. Remember Mars bars were huge? I remember paying 3d for one. What about Caramac, I loved that one.
  6. Trebor Blackjacks and fruit salad, 4 for a penny. Bonfire toffee.
  7. Aaaaah the Nottstalgia of it all. I can smell the bonfire toffee as i type yummo! As for the brown sticky stuff, my mum used to make me have that Sunday nights after a hot bath in front of the fire it was revolting,it smelt of greasy overalls. And then to make matters worse, we were given Syrup of Figs,& then we had vinegar combed through our hair to keep away the nits Shock oh the good old days !!?? And as for Caramac, we went to a place called Beechworth here in North East Victoria & went into a sweet shop which sells lollies[sweets] from all over the world & we bought a Caram
  8. i thought this tread was called "Where In The World ?, Guess where it is..." it's a street Caz ........ cheers and thank you...........i win  could be that street in Beeston where that bloke sits covered in bees on bonfire night ?
  9. it was at this years bonfire night at the forest taken just in of the pavilion on the bank the fire was fenced off just to the right the fair was on the car park .
  10. hi Rr.. It looks like everybodys abandoned the fair in favour of watching the martian landings nearby.. either that, or its the goose fair with bonfire night superimposed on the top.. I would imagine its on the Forest, but how did you manage that picture? ilko.
  11. G'day Ilkolad, :D Great to receive your reply what a small world, I lived at Number 10 Ryehill Terrace, before the entry. What year did you leave ? As I recall a couple of Irish boys lived at number 11 in about 1967 to 1972 ish? Were they related to you at all? Barry Straw certainly rings a few bells, I seem to remember his mum Mrs Straw, her name was a familiar name to me but why I dont know. Phil Hall was the fruiterer, I can see his yard now. I remember the very tall Jamaican lady that lived on Rye hill Terrace too & a couple of old spinsters whose names escape me. I also lived on Rye
