Some say that those stories were started by rogue newspaper reporters using the limited radio waves , looking for sensational headlines . There was this story recently about the radio operator who received the first distress signals on the Carpathia .He was called Harold Cottam born in Southwell and finally retired to Lowdham . How could they report all passengers safe and transferred to the Carpathia beggars belief Think about the rellies back home getting that information and if you enlarge the pictures, you will still be able to read where they were saying that it was unsinkable. One message asking if all passengers were safe and another signal from a ship called The Asian that was towing an oil tank (?) to Halifax . This from the Derby Telegraph 22.04.1912 . The penalty imposed seemed a lot less onerous than would be expected today, and I wonder if there was an outcry regarding the leniency of that, which would certainly be heard nowadays.
